As UVA’s Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics and chair of the College of Arts & Sciences’ Department of Mathematics, Dr. Ken Ono has been working with the University’s varsity swimmers by analyzing acceleration data to determine how the swimmers can shave seconds, or even milliseconds, off of their times in competition. Dr. Ono previously worked with Olympic Gold Medalist Andrew Wilson, prior to his Olympic success in 2021.

My thoughts
As a member of the varsity swimming and diving team, it has been incredible to be able to work with Dr. Ono. Since I was 4 years old, I have been a passionate competitive swimmer, and now at the end of my swimming career, it is incredible to see how Dr. Ono is changing the sport. I think the most useful aspect of this article is how it demonstrates the importance of cross-functionality in Universities. Being able to combine the mathematics department and the athletics department to create success is inspiring.
