Background

Participants read about one of three situations: Tenant-landlord issue (mice), contractor, and auto mechanic.
Then, they got one of three pieces of advice: deal-term related advice, demeanor related advice, and information related advice.

The advice is where the manipulation of label happened. These are the three pieces of advice:
Deal Terms
The approach you take with your [LABEL] is crucial for your success in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully in advance about your limits. What’s the worst deal you could still live with from this [LABEL]? At what point would you be better off walking away and pursuing another [OP]? That’s your limit. Keep this limit in your mind when bargaining with your [LABEL].
Demeanor
The approach you take with your [LABEL] is crucial for your success in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully about what impression you want to convey. How do you want this [LABEL] to see you as a negotiator? You should consider the specific behaviors you could display that would have the biggest impact on your [LABEL]’s impression. How your [LABEL] sees you and feels about you can make a huge difference.
Information
The approach you take with your [LABEL] is crucial for your success in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully in advance about what information you want to seek and what you want to share. What should you try to learn from this [LABEL] that could help you? What might the [OP] ask you during the negotiation … and how should you respond? Prepare in advance for the back and forth conversation with your [LABEL].

Then, we asked them to apply the advice to the situation in 1-2 sentences. And then, they completed the behavioral likert scales.

Main DV’s

As a reminder, we asked participants to rate the following behaviors on three dimensions: (1) How likely they are to behave that way in this scenario (alpha = 0.67); (2) How likely their OP is to behave that way in this scenario (alpha = 0.84); and (3) How effective will the behavior be in this scenario (alpha = 0.75).

1. Trying to mislead or deceive my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart about my negotiation priorities and positions
2. Being transparent, sharing truthful information about my negotiating priorities and position with my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart (R)
3. Acting in a tough, aggressive way toward my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart
4. Acting in a friendly, warm way toward my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart (R)
5. Trying to anchor the negotiation in my favor by putting forth an extreme proposal and refusing to budge
6. Pursuing a deal by offering my opponent/partner/counterpart a proposal that is favorable to them (R)
R indicates that the item is reverse-scored

hmm. ok. We replicated own and op effects for partner-opponent. But we did not replicate the effectiveness piece. We’re also pretty close to an effect for partner-counterpart in both of those, which is cool. We didn’t preregister an effect for counterpart anyway, but this does give us some intuition that partner is different from counterpart and opponent. cool.

Components of behaviors

First, let’s break down our DV’s. Each DV has three components: Deceitfulness, Demeanor, Deal-term making. Let’s see the items again before jumping in.

Deceitfulness:
1. Trying to mislead or deceive my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart about my negotiation priorities and positions
2. Being transparent, sharing truthful information about my negotiating priorities and position with my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart (R)

Demeanor:
3. Acting in a tough, aggressive way toward my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart
4. Acting in a friendly, warm way toward my negotiation opponent/partner/counterpart (R)

Deal-term making:
5. Trying to anchor the negotiation in my favor by putting forth an extreme proposal and refusing to budge
6. Pursuing a deal by offering my opponent/partner/counterpart a proposal that is favorable to them (R)

R indicates that the item is reverse-scored

Efficacy

After these behavior measures, we asked participants to indicate how comfortable they would be to handle that situation without the advice.
The options were:
1. I wouldn’t really have any idea what to do or say in a negotiation like this
2. I would have only some idea of what to do or say in a negotiation like this
3. I would have a pretty good idea of what to do or say in a negotiation like this
4. I would know exactly what to do or say in a negotiation like this

This is the distribution overall:

And this is the distribution by scenario:

Efficacy as a moderator

Potentially, the advice would apply only to those who would seek it, or who wouldn’t know what to do in the situation. So, I’ll split efficacy to two (low is 1 and 2; high is 3 and 4), and then I’ll see if it moderates our main effects.

Open-text responses

After the advice and right before the behavior likert scales, participants wrote a couple of sentences in response to the following prompt:
How would you best apply this expert advice to your upcoming negotiation with the [LABEL]? Please provide a brief description of 1-2 sentences.

label sit_char adv_char behav_open
opponent tenant demeanor I would appear friendly but concerned. I would give the impression that I made a model tenant and am planning to stay a long time, provided that I am treated well.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would explain to the property manager that accidents happen and I would like the mice fixed with a exterminator inspection a month later. I would then tell the manager, if the issue is not resolved I would have to move out, this is a huge hassle for both of us so I instead I would like a $300 rent credit
partner contractor information Think very carefully about what your end result should be and try to anticipate any questions the contractor might have
partner mechanic information I would definitely try to negotiate as much as possible for the pricing. I think it’s best to push the price as far as possible.
counterpart tenant information I would ask for more than I originally wanted so that we can negotiating to the actual thing I wanted
counterpart mechanic information I would try to find out if any options were available to deflate the price such as a rebuild of the alternator. I would also attempt to find out more about the mechanics diagnosis by asking probing questions regarding his determination.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would stand strong and be a tough negotiator. I would not back down and would show the manager I mean business and cannot be pushed around.
counterpart contractor information I would lay out the a general idea of what I would like done with the space. Then I would voice the concerns I have and whether or not there will be complications.
opponent mechanic information I’d ask for more information about the repairs to the alternator and timing belt, specific parts that may be used, and the amount of time it will take to do these repairs.
opponent contractor dealterm First thing I would do is figure out what’s the absolute most I would pay to get this done. That’s the limit if I walk away or bite the bullet and pay the price. The next would be my desired price to pay for it. I would then go below my desired price to try and negotiate towards it. Knowing these limits if I am in between those two points I probably have a good deal.
partner contractor information I would be weary of how much information I tell the contractor. I would watch exactly what I say as well.
opponent tenant demeanor I would rephrase my request from “I have mice in my apartment and you need to fix it because it’s effecting my life and space I live” to “there’s damage in the apartment caused by the radiator which is letting mice in. This could seriously damage your property and lead to a big mess with other tenants.”.
counterpart mechanic information I would ask the mechanic if there are alternate solutions, or if there is anything I can do that would be a less expensive fix. The mechanic’s skills in are in demand, so I don’t think “a lower price for the same work” is reasonable or likely. Instead looking to use their knowledge to arrive at a better solution, or one that gives me more time to address.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would be very deliberate about creating an impression.
opponent contractor dealterm I would consider my bottom line, or the maximum I would be willing to spend and be willing to walk away if the contractor’s offer exceeds it. I would also be mindful of any red flags that may indicate the contractor is not capable of completing the project to my standards.
counterpart contractor dealterm I think this is decent advice, that all contractors might make mistakes, but there’s limitations to what the impacts are. You need to manage people and figure out what you’re comfortable with.
counterpart tenant dealterm Worst case scenario is that I would break the lease if they don’t acommodate my needs.
opponent tenant dealterm I would keep it in mind and understand that there is a limit point that I would be willing to live with the situation, but also remember that civility and good faith conversation can also be effective.
partner contractor demeanor I would look for ways in which I could apply techniques for looking confident. This impression would show that I am in charge.
partner mechanic demeanor I would go back to the mechanic with a lot of confidence. If I look like I don’t know what I’m talking about or nervous, it won’t work as well.
partner tenant information I would use the fact that I’ve been living there for over a year and have paid my rent on time. I would also add that I would like to continue staying there as long as the problem was fixed and handled correctly.
opponent mechanic dealterm Well like my friend that gave me advice said I should think up front about my limits in the negotiation, the maximum number that I would be willing to pay. I should think about and know the number that I would be better off walking away and going to another mechanic.
partner mechanic information I would ask the mechanic how the timing belt is making the noise affecting the engine. Ask if there are cheaper parts to use for replacements.
opponent tenant information I would apply this advice by focusing on the repair and taking care of the rodent problem.
opponent tenant information I would look at the lease first and ensure my rights as a tenant. Also check the laws in my state for same. I would approach property manager with that information as well as a request to fix the hole within 10 days, and provide a dollar amount of damages I am requesting (replacement of lost food in pantry).
opponent tenant dealterm I wouls start off by nicely asking him to repair the damages. I would also ask kindly to credit my rent due to the issues. If he doesn’t oblige, I would ask that my lease be broken without punishment so I can look for a new place to live.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would keep a limit in mind for my negotiation with the contractor.
counterpart mechanic information I’d be willing to speak on terms of the negotiation first thing as forward and blunt as possible knowing that there’s room to bargain.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would want to make myself seem serious and well-informed to the property manager. I would want to show that I have my facts straight and I would know how to proceed if they cannot help me.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would tell the mechanic that I have investigated what he told me and I have called around for estimates. I believe he is qualified to perform the repair but his estimate is higher than the ones I received.
counterpart tenant information I would want to start questions by trying to find out if the landlord is aware of water damage in the apartment and if he has done anything about it. The water damage would cause a hole which would cause mice to get into the apartment.
opponent tenant information I would be direct and forward with how I want the mouse infestation resolved.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would make sure that they could do the work I want them to do. I would act like I know exactly what I’m talking about so they respect me.
partner mechanic demeanor How they perceive me is crucial to negotiations.
opponent contractor information I would apply this advice by having a set amount that I am willing to spend and not going over that. I would also start on the lower end of cost and negotiate from there if possible.
partner mechanic demeanor I suppose I would ask them if the price could be any lower. Negotiate a reasonable payment plan
opponent tenant dealterm I would say the the situation with the mice is untenable and unsanitary. If not corrected I will have to find another apartment.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I could remind them that I could always seek another mechanic if the price is not right. It would create room to haggle if they know they could potentially lose a customer.
opponent contractor information I would look at their website and reviews to see if there were any poor ratings for the specific job I requested. I would also research how much the project should cost on average. Check out the general prices of materials and see if their numbers add up.
opponent tenant dealterm I would decide what my absolute minimum offer from them would be, like they need to at least fix the hole in the wall as well as cover the cost of the loss pantry items. I would then start by aiming a little higher like to get a month’s rent covered and then negotiate down to the bare minimum. I would say, “this is my best and final offer.” If they aren’t willing then I would cut my losses and look elsewhere for the next year.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would tell the mechanic that I had then gotten a second opinion on things and that I would really like us to negotiate the cost of the repairs. I would also tell them I know a lot about car repair.
opponent tenant information I would try to keep my position secured, while also fishing for information from the landlord that could help my position.
opponent tenant information I would write down a few questions ahead of time. Mainly focusing on whether or not this has been an issue in the past.
partner tenant demeanor i would think about how i present myself to the person i will be talking to and go from there.
counterpart tenant demeanor There needs to be a discussion immediately about the health and safety of the building. And how we should ensure our tenants are being cared for.
partner contractor demeanor I would come up with a solid plan for the negotiation process and would follow through during negotiations.
counterpart mechanic information I don’t understand anything about vehicle maintenance so my best guess would be that I tell the mechanic that the estimate is on the high side and after speaking with another mechanic I am going to shop around for a more reasonable estimate and hope this makes him bring the price down on the spot for fear of losing a customer.
opponent contractor demeanor The expert is informing the homeowner to remain confident and set a good impression in order to get the best leverage in negotiating. How the homeowner comes off is important as the homeowner shouldn’t come off as unsure or appear as someone who can be taken advantage of easily.
partner mechanic demeanor I would be direct and straightforward about they way I will be conveying my impressions to my partner. I wont want to look or sound like a negotiator but at the same time I would want to negotiate for a good price. With a little bit of friendly compliments and of course advice from the negotiator, I should make headway
partner mechanic dealterm I would probably as about how much it would save me to get both repairs done together vs. just repair the timing belt for now. Also, I might ask if there is a discount if I pay cash vs. credit card. I also might see if he can knock off 200 dollars or so. But realistically I would just have the timing belt repaired and wait on the alternator.
partner mechanic information I would discuss with my partner ahead of time so that we are both on the same page.
opponent contractor demeanor I would make sure I showed up to the meeting looking professional and informed about what I needed to be done.
partner contractor dealterm I will have a firm limit on how much to pay. And I will be more than willing to walk away and start over with another contractor if things don’t go well.
opponent contractor demeanor I would make sure ahead of time that I had educated myself on kitchen islands, the exact work that needed to be done and the structural issues that could be an issue because of that work. I would also be well versed in what permits would be needed. I would want to show that I am someone who would be involved in the process.
partner mechanic information I would inform the mechanic that, given my expertise, I am fully aware what the damage regarding my vehicle should be. That way, the mechanic isn’t able to charge me over my budget.
partner mechanic dealterm I would explain my situation. Offer 1000 with a large deposit.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I would do a ton of research that night on average costs for that type of repair in my region. If it is indeed too high, I would use that as leverage.
counterpart tenant information Think about how you are going to answer and respond to the questions before hand.
opponent tenant demeanor I would try to be really professional. I would try to make it seem like I was really knowledgeable in the laws of the city / region.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would determine in advance what my budget limit is and my time limit. What am I will to give up and when is it time to move on.
partner mechanic dealterm I would ask for the price of just replacing the timing belt at this time. I could get a lower price and have the opportunity to see how well he does the work.
partner contractor demeanor I need to be very assertive but professional about what I need in my home. I want to convey to the contractor that I want to have no regrets about hiring them and make sure they understand what I need
opponent contractor dealterm I would definitely have a budget that I would stick to. Also, I would want to see past jobs similar to mine that the contractor has done.
partner contractor demeanor It was confusing who the “partner” is. I think you mean the professional negotiator (the friend of a friend) is referring to the potential contractor as a partner. The Negotiator wants me to give the Contractor/Partner the best impression of myself.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would consider which demeanor and tone of voice would be best to use and how best to start out my negotiating. I will also think awhile on how to respond if the property manager reacts this way versus that way.
opponent tenant demeanor I would make sure to research on who is the most likely person the property managing company would send. And then I would find out what kind of person they are.
opponent contractor demeanor I would want something in writing to know there will not be a comprise to my structure.
counterpart contractor demeanor Will go for negotiation to fix my countertop and need the work should done in proper way within the time limit. I ask them to provide the quote and also the the materials which going to use my kitchen. I needed quality, finishing should be perfect.
partner mechanic demeanor I will utilize his idea in renegotiating the price try to beat it down. though I wont do it immediately. ill manage the car for a while and if I cant ill take the bus.
partner contractor information I would imaging and plan out what I want out of the negotiation like price work etc. I would imagine scenarios and what they might say back to me so I would have counteroffers prepared.
opponent contractor dealterm I would likely focus on getting a price that I would be wiling pay by starting low and only going close to my maximum.
partner mechanic dealterm I would explain that my financial resources are limited and is there anyway they could reduce my cost.
partner mechanic dealterm The first thing I would do would get a second opinion from a mechanic, not an “expert friend”. Depending on the second mechanics quote, I would use that as a bargaining chip to try to lower the price point. None of the information from the “expert friend” tells me how to negotiate the price point. Just that I can. I don’t know enough about cars to use that information without further input.
partner mechanic dealterm I would let them know that the price they are charging is too high and it needs to come down in order for them to get your business
partner mechanic information I would look into the average cost of these repairs and see if there is some wiggle room to negotiate the price down. I would also look up some information about how these repairs are done so i could know if what the repairman was telling me is true and that i could answer their questions back.
opponent tenant demeanor I would make sure to dress appropriately and use firm, assertive language when communicating the issue and my desired compensation.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would do my research on pricing and good contractors who can do the job well. I have to come up with questions to ask that I need to know based on their work.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would remain calm and project a steady, determined demeanor when speaking to the contractor. I would make sure that we are on the same page, and describing the same sort of project and work at each stage of the conversation.
opponent mechanic information I would find other prices for this service from the internet. I would not share my budget with my opponent, but would instead emphasize that I have other options
counterpart tenant dealterm I would basically tell the property manager that something need to be done about the water damage before it gets any worse. I would tell them that it causing mice to get in and damage property of theirs and mine. I would argue it is in their best interest to fix it to get better. As for being paid for damages, I would expect this because I have never seen that happen to someone that was renting. I feel like they would say they are not responsible for damages done from pest.
partner tenant information I would have a list of all the details of what need repaired and how much they would cost. I would have pictures to go with the lists. I would bring someone else with me to help back me up.
partner mechanic dealterm I would speak to the mechanic as if I’m looking for deal. How can we get this price better and within my budget?
partner contractor dealterm I would ask lots of questions and have an open mind when discussing my ideas for the renovation. I would think of all outcomes and gauge how trustworthy they seem to me before i made any harsh decisions about potentially calling another contractor.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would take the advice and utilize it to my advantage. I would use the information to negotiate the best settlement possible.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would decide the most I will pay for the service. When the contractor shows up to let me know what his price is. If it’s over the max amount I want to pay, then I will let him know his amount is over my budget. If it’s under my max amount then there really is no need for negotiation.
opponent contractor information I would ask them to explain their plan, and outcome. Also, an explanation of some of the complaints people have made.
counterpart mechanic information I tell the mechanic I only have \(1000 to spend. These shops always try to add on extras, that are often not needed. I would also mention I had an appointment at another autobody shop to get the car checked out, and an estimate from them. </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> partner </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> contractor </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> demeanor </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> I would work hard to make a good first impression by being energetic, assertive and extroverted, but NOT too pushy or aggressive. </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> counterpart </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> contractor </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> information </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> I would need to know what certifications this contractor holds, and ask to look at photos of past similar jobs that he has completed. For instance, I would tell the landlord that there is a hole in the wall caused by water damage from the radiator in the bedroom, therefore the radiator and the hole need to be fixed, and I would not share about the mice. </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> partner </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> contractor </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> information </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> I would apply the advise by asking the contractor about the other jobs that they have done and if they can show some of the work. I would tell them upfront that I have other contractors that I have already consulted and have estimates for the cost of work and I am going to consider all of the options based on work and price that way he will know I have other options and I am more likely to be able to get him to go down on his price. </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> partner </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> mechanic </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> information </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> I would ask if there was anything that we could do that was a cheaper fix for the car </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> partner </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> contractor </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> demeanor </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> id like to explain to you what id like done and see if were on the same page and work through this together </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> opponent </td> <td style="text-align:left;width: 4cm; "> mechanic </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> dealterm </td> <td style="text-align:left;"> Since you know what's wrong you could call a couple other shops and get an idea of their prices and if one is 100-150\) cheaper you could use that for negotiation. The other option is to ask for a discount since you don’t have a lot of money and see if that could work.
partner mechanic demeanor I wish more details had been provided by the expert negotiator. Personally, I would probably seek another estimate before negotiating with the mechanic, but to answer this question I guess I would offer a lesser amount for the work.
opponent mechanic information To best prepare to use this advice for my negotiation I will look into the prices of the parts for the timing belt and alternator and also how long a repair of them should typically take. I will ask what kind of fees are associated with their service and what they charge for hourly rate as well.
partner contractor dealterm I would make sure I can trust them and that I am comfortable working with them. I will not negotiate any more monetarily-wise, what we agree upon is final.
opponent tenant demeanor I would likely be sure to dress professionally, and print out city, state, and federal ordinances to bring with me. I would present laws and demands reasonably, while also laying out consequences.
partner tenant information I would lay out the issue of the mice and hole from the water damage leak in detail, then see what the property manager has to respond with.
opponent contractor information I would obtain information about product and service costs ahead of time. I would also research common questions contractors would ask during a consultation.
counterpart mechanic information Well i believe the expert adviser is not new to this kind of situation so i will very well go with his directions in order to interact with the mechanic
counterpart tenant information I think I would be very direct and brief by explaining what I would like the landlord to do and await their response before continuing.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would just approach them and let them know about my advice. If they have questions then I would answer all them as needed.
partner tenant information I’d leave out how I found where the mice were coming from originally and see what the property manager has to offer in exchange for just the removal of the mice. Later on, I can reveal where they were coming from and attempt to negotiate to have them fix the radiator, the hole, and reimburse me for damages and hardship.
partner mechanic dealterm I would try to see if I could get the mechanic to go down on the price to something that I consider reasonable. I would do this by telling him that I am short on cash and whether that limit would be sufficient to fix the car.
opponent contractor information I have no idea how I would do this. I have never done this before in my life so I am unsure
counterpart mechanic demeanor I will ask the mechanic if he can give me a discount on the service and other parts needed in the repair.
partner contractor dealterm I need to understand the highest price I’m willing to pay for the services and confirm my two conditions (safe structure, working electric/water) will be met at that maximum price.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would tell the mechanic that i only have a certain amount to work with and no more.
opponent mechanic information I would ask what would happen should I only change my timing belt and worry about repairing the alternator later. I would as the cost of doing one now and the other later
partner tenant demeanor I would want the property manager to see me as competent and not a person they can just push around. I would rehearse what I am going to ask for and go over the reasons before the meeting so that I appear confident and sure of what I am saying.
partner tenant information I would just try to be well prepared for the negotiation and hold firm in my demands.
partner contractor dealterm I would try to do my own research to figure out what I would expect the total cost for this project to be. Then I would make my own judgement as to how much I am willing to pay as a maximum. This would be my upper limit for bargaining.
counterpart tenant dealterm They explained to plan in advance what would be my lowest acceptable offer.
partner mechanic dealterm I need to figure out how much money I really have to spend and try to stay within that. I also need to make sure that my car gets fixed within that price
partner tenant dealterm After thinking about my limits in detail, I would approach the property manager cautiously and very specifically. I would record the conversation as well, for proof of promises.
partner mechanic demeanor I would try to convey a friendly and knowledgeable stance. I would express a desire to see a detailed breakdown of the estimate with labor and materials specified and tell them that I may need to get another opinion although I would rather not go to the trouble if they can provide me with more clarity.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would state my budget and see what it can get me
partner tenant dealterm Based on the advice given, I would think about what is the worst case situation I am willing to tolerate. At that point I would argue for the things I want with the understanding that as long as negotiations dont cross that threshold than I am still in a good position.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I’m thinking about giving you my business, but first we need to talk about the price. Considering I’ll be bringing my vehicle for two repairs, I’m sure that we can come to an agreement about a lower price.
counterpart contractor dealterm i would ask them how i could research the company more or is it possible to be present when the renovations for the kitchen and living room begin
partner contractor dealterm I would decide before hand what’s the maximum amount I would be willing to pay for the work. I would start at around half that, and negotiate up to the max.
opponent contractor information I would prepare responses to questions that the contractor might ask me and do my research so that I have the knowledge to push back on the contractor if he suggests anything that may affect the quality of the project.
partner mechanic information I would definitely try to pull as much information about my car and the repairs from the mechanic while also holding back information about myself. I would try to use the information to negotiate a better price.
opponent mechanic information I’d probably want to see how costs are broken down. How many hours will it take to fix and at what hourly rate does he charge? How much do each of the parts cost?
opponent tenant demeanor I would use this advice to make sure that I come across as a serious negotiator to the management company. I would cater my approach to ensure that they knew I was serious and would escalate if necessary, even if I did not want to do so.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would make sure that in order to get the best result possible for my needs that I would need to present myself in a way that seemed agreeable to their plight as well. (i.e.: “I know your probably a very busy property manager but I feel unsafe in this apartment given that mice are able invest my home…especially considering I signed a one year lease). Something that allows them to feel like you’re empathetic of their situation but also knowing you’re firm in your concern with yours.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would make a list of demands that must be implemented while they work on my project and ask them to sign as a legal paper for future payment and that would be my minimum. Also, I would add a note with additional suggestions which would be paid extra if they can implement it ( and that would be my maximum)
counterpart tenant dealterm I would have an idea of what I expect and would have everything I need to back up my position (copy of lease, oicturrs, repair estimate, etc)
opponent contractor information Tell him what I want; get an estimate; collect data to make a counteroffer.
partner mechanic information Watch YouTube videos of how to make repair and look of prices of parts needed for repair.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I would take the mechanics advise and leave. I would shop around and see if what the mechanic said was accurate
partner tenant demeanor I would make sure that I let the representative know that the living conditions are unacceptable and untenable. They have a responsibility to uphold the implied writ of habitability and mice aren’t a part of that.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would prepare by trying to find a general idea of what the renovations may cost. I would also ask my partner or father-in-law to be there me to have someone who is perceived as having more experience in construction.
opponent tenant demeanor I would keep a friendly but professional negotiation. I would also put to property manager things have lost, had to dispose and might still have to dispose if the problem is not been resolved.
partner contractor dealterm I wouldn’t try to low ball him at all because he might be insulted and not take the job. If he thinks I don’t respect him, he might not do a good job.
opponent contractor dealterm The limit would be this contractor knowing what permits need to be pulled and doing the proper analysis to ensure the structural engineering was correct. I would research what has to be done in that aspect and compare that to his assessment.
partner mechanic information I would ask if there are cheaper alternatives and if he would be willing to use parts I supplied myself.
opponent mechanic information asking how well you can do the job and can you fix cars
partner contractor dealterm I would use it to set a price limit. I’d lowball them and use someone else if they exceeded my highest amount.
counterpart tenant dealterm i would come up with a plan that is at least two levels away from my bare minimum so that my landlord would be more likely to except a deal that is still above my absolute bottom choice.
partner tenant information I would think about what I want to achieve and write that down. I would also try to be prepared for any questions that my landlord my have. I would pull together some numbers regarding the credit that I want for backup.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would do some research on average timing belt and alternator repair. Then use that to negotiate the rate, and be prepared to walk if I don’t receive a better offer.
opponent tenant demeanor As I have been taught, who ever makes the first offer loses. I would tell my issues to the landlord and then I would listen to what their remedy would be.
counterpart contractor information I would try to anticipate the questions he will ask me and how I should respond. I will also think about what questions I want to ask and how he might respond.
partner mechanic information I would prepare ahead of time considering how to negotiate.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would offer solutions I thought were do able and what I was willing to take. I would be calm and collective in hopes we got this settled
partner tenant information I would prepare what i want to say in advance and have proof of the issue and the food I had to throw away.
partner contractor dealterm I would first ask for multiple plans at a higher and lower cost. I would also make sure he knew which walls were load bearing walls so that they would not be tampered with.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would be calm and collected but forceful in my messaging. I would like to be fair but in no way can I lose. So i make my point and take what comes with it
opponent mechanic demeanor hi have been experiencing some difficulties in my car and which it couldnt stop until it been fixed up. kindly ensure you do a proper check on the car and fix any casualties you found.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would get another estimate from another shop first. I would then use that in my negotiation if I decided to use the first shop and the second estimate was lower.
partner contractor information Give him all the parameters of the project, including not knowing if the wall to be removed is load bearing. Let him know what you’d like to pay, and you absolute maximum.
partner mechanic demeanor Research the average prices of repairs of the belt and the alternator so that you can be prepared to make a reasonable counter offer. You can also try to make strong eye contact and use assertive body language.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would basically come at it with a polite demeanor and try to get the mechanic to work with me as far as price goes and ask if he could give me a discounted rate. If that fails i try to get him to give me a deal given that it’s a new business and having a repeat customer would be worth it’s weight in gold.
opponent contractor information I would ask the contractor for references first and ask if he was comfortable in my talking to previous clients. I would also askfor proof of liability insurance and current licensesfor this type of work. Then I would ask to see before and after project photos before describing exactly what I wantedt o accomplish. Lastly, I would then ask about the price and if there was room for negotiation at all.
opponent contractor dealterm Before negotiating with the contractor, I would determine my bottom line and keep it in mind during the negotiation. This will ensure that I’m making a deal that I can still accept, and will avoid a deal that is below my limit, at which point it may be better to pursue a different option.
opponent contractor information Know what you want specifically for your home. That is crucial in the cost. Also, have a budget in mind and you will not exceed so that it can keep negotiating simple.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would try to get a good idea of what the property management company is attempting to avoid doing, and press them on that. I would make sure to stress that I am just exercising my tenant’s rights.
partner contractor demeanor I will use every single detail that i can used to negotiate a good deal on my favor using word that can convinced that 100% sure of wath I’m saying.
counterpart mechanic information I would tell the mechanic that I would like to use his shop as I have heard good things about them. I would tell them that it was between them and another shop and would ask him if he could do a little better on the price.
counterpart tenant information I would ask for a time schedule for when the repair would be done. I would ask what are the steps that will be taken for future pest control in the building.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I would ask more questions of the mechanic concerning the issue with the car. I would then ask the mechanic if the job could be done for a more reasonable price.
partner contractor demeanor I would be a little hesitant to trust the contractor with tearing down a whole wall.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I would first determine the most that I would agree to before walking away and then make an offer that is significantly below that.
opponent tenant demeanor Show that you have done your research on landlord/tenant cases. Be prepared with specific questions that demonstrate your knowledge and show your determination.
opponent mechanic demeanor I’d explain that I’d love to help support him as a new business owner but that estimate is out of my budget. If he’d be willing to come down on price, I’d be happy to continue supporting him and referring my friends to him.
opponent contractor demeanor I would try to appear like I was not desperate to do the work and not wealthy. I think that would portray an image that would not be taken advantage of in the negotiation.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I would begin by getting a second opinion of the vehicle’s problem, not negotiating what could very well be a fair price.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would ask for exactly what I want, and if I don’t get it, threaten to get another apartment/break the lease/etc.
partner tenant dealterm I like that you think beforehand what the worse deal you can take. When you think and prepare before the negotiation you are prepared for what the other person might suggest and you know your limits and how much you are willing to accept.
counterpart mechanic information I would ask if that was the best price he could do. I would let him know that I would try another garage to compare price.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would make certain that I have a well-planned speech and that I am direct and thorough in my approach and discussion with the property management.
counterpart tenant information I would ask other tenants if they have had any previous interaction with the property management company that owns the apartments regarding a damage claim and what was the final outcome. The property manger might ask when the damage first appeared so I would make sure I could provide the date I first saw the damage and also provide pictures of the damage.
opponent contractor demeanor Should establish the position of limited technical knowledge and some range of pricing from research.
opponent tenant information I think that is weird. It needs to be fixed they need to fix it. Why “negotiate”?
opponent tenant information I would first decide what I want them to provide (repairs, an exact compensation amount, etc). I would write this down and other points that I want to make. I also would try to think of questions they may as and brainstorm different answers
opponent contractor information I would ensure he is qualified and ask for a portfolio and any other education. Asking for references would be helpful. If he can not come up with these requests, negotiating would be almost non existent.
opponent tenant information I’ll make sure the advice I got from this expert is well implemented to yield a positive result of negotiation. I’ll make sure I’m able to convince the property manager to fix the damage
opponent contractor dealterm To know what you limit is. If you can live with the amount that the contractor gives you, then you are successful. I will use this to get the best price possible.
opponent tenant dealterm I would tell the property manager about what I found out and the reason for the mice and tell them to fix it within X amount of time or I will be moving out and finding a better place to live.
partner contractor dealterm I would apply this expert advice to my upcoming negotiation with the contractor, because i want the contractor to safely remove the wall without causing damage. I would not want to spend alot of money on building if it doesn’t come out right as expected, or if it was not built correctly. I would like to check all options and check with other contractors to see all my options.
opponent mechanic demeanor I’d tell the mechanic that the cost for the suggested repairs is prohibitive. I’d ask him to give me the most competitive, firm price, he can offer me to do the job. Assuming that he gave me a quote, I’d let him know that I’m considering asking other mechanics in the area to give me their most competitive bid as well, because I have no way to judge what work is really necessary and what a reasonable price is for the work.
counterpart tenant demeanor I would be straight forward and say this is what happened and here’s the solution. It needs to be resolved ASAP
counterpart tenant dealterm I would probably use this advice in the way it’s stated. I would first look to ensure I have other apartment options, this would make me feel more confident going to battle. I would figure out what I can live with and not live with and I would negotiate.
partner mechanic information Given the expert advice of my friend’s friend, I would take a step back and take as much time as I can to evaluate my options. I’d take my car to a couple of other mechanics and see if they identify the same issue and what price they offer. After doing more independent research online as to what these repairs should cost, I would invite the negotiator to come with me to one of the mechanics to try to lower the price to something more reasonable.
opponent contractor information I would do what research I can to find out what I want, within my parametres, would cost - rough numbers and would consider how high I’m willing to go. I’d make some notes on supplies and average costs so I can counter any claims about costs.
partner mechanic demeanor I would tell him a friend looked at it and gave me a second opinion. That opinion was that 1200 in repairs was unnecessary.
partner mechanic demeanor I could tell the mechanic that Im kind of short in money at the moment but I really need the car for work. I’d kindly ask him for a discount.
partner contractor dealterm With the advice, in the negotiation with the contractor, I will tell them that I want the kitchen and living room to be restructured in a way in which there is no damage that can conflict with the rest of the house.
partner mechanic demeanor The mechanics often change the price and make it bigger. His friend though said that it is not a big deal, and gave him an advise
partner mechanic information I would ask that the mechanic not touch the alternator and only fix the timing belt. I would also negotiate the price since im only getting the timing belt repaired.
partner contractor demeanor I would display enough amount of confidence while being eloquent with my wording.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would think about my budget and what is the uppermost limit that I could come up with
counterpart contractor dealterm To come up with a number goal to negotiate for. To not take the first offer and being willing to walk away.
counterpart tenant information I would come up with a couple possible scripts/lines of dialogue I can expect from the property management. I would then prepare some answers I think sound convincing and strong as responses.
opponent tenant demeanor I think I would want to appear confident and as someone who looks like they know what they’re talking about. I would try not to be passive.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would think of my limits I could live with. Afterwards, I would converse with my manager and start my demands higher than what I actually want
opponent contractor information I think you have to be very upfront about your non-negotiables.
partner mechanic information I wouldn’t share everything with the mechanic, would keep details from him to avoid being overcharged. Give small answers only.
opponent tenant information I would think carefully and provide evidence of the issues to them, speaking calmly and explaining that all of this was there before I moved in and before it escalates further.
opponent contractor information I would do research on what projects like this typically cost in my area and for similar size projects. I’d also want to know about the qualifications of my contractor.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would speak with the property manager and explain the situation. I would ask them to repair the hole and any water damage as well as set traps in case there are any remaining mice. I would not expect any type of discount in rent or payment for any cleaning services, pest control items or time you’ve had to deal with this. They more than likely deny repairing anything if being asked for more than they’re willing to do.
partner mechanic dealterm I would have a number in mind of the highest price I would be willing to pay the mechanic for their services. If their final offer was above that I would walk away and find another mechanic.
partner contractor information I would ask the contractor what kind of credentials they have. I would also want some phone numbers of people they have done work for and that will give me a personal reference for them. I would want to talk with them about all the different components involved in removing the wall and their experience doing this. How long it will take, how much it will cost, who will be doing the actual work and who will be supervising the workers. I would want to see some pictures of jobs they have completed a
counterpart mechanic demeanor How your counterpart sees you and views you could make a huge difference when negotiating.
counterpart contractor demeanor When I want to negotiate with you contractor, First off I’ll make sure I keep a good image of myself.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I would pre-formulate what I was going to say prior to approaching them to bargain in order to build my confidence.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I would try to first be friendly and non-confrontational. Next I would convey how much I respect his skill set, and finally let him know that I have shopped around and know what is competitive.
opponent contractor demeanor I would be conscious of the impression I make, being careful to not communicate or suggest that I’m not knowledgable or that I’m willing to spend just any amount for the job. At the same time, I would want to make sure he understands that I would not accept anything less than a perfect job.
partner mechanic demeanor I would make sure to approach the subject with the mechanic carefully. I would just politely suggest that maybe there could be some bargaining with the price.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would try my best to keep their advice in mind while negotiating. The idea of “can I just walk from this” would be the in the back of my mind during my interaction with the landlord.
partner tenant information I would ask the property manager how they would handle something like this without letting them know that I had the problem. Then based on their response I can make a better guess on where to go next.
opponent mechanic dealterm I’d determine my worst-case scenario, X. I’d approach the mechanic and tell them frankly that I was on a limited budget and ask what they could do for 60% of X. For that deal, I’d be prepared to compromise on timing (I’m not in a rush) and things like all-new parts. We’d go from that point.
counterpart mechanic information The advice I got was to try and plan ahead. Consider what the mechanic might ask me. Think about what the conversation is going to look like.
partner tenant demeanor Come at the situation in a non aggressive way to try and reach a solution before things escalate.
counterpart tenant information
partner mechanic dealterm I really can’t afford $1200. Is there any way you can take less? The most I have is $1000.
opponent tenant demeanor I would make sure that I am strong in the negotiation process. I want to appear demanding and not weak. I would make sure that I would pursue legal counsel if they did not act accordingly.
partner contractor information I would probably make sure that the exact job I want done is clear from the start. I would also put forth the idea of a budget just slightly less than what I’m actually willing to spend, in order to allow room for negotiation.
counterpart contractor demeanor I would not act scared while talking to the contractor. I would try to act like I knew what I was talking about. I would keep my emotions in check. I would not disclose financials.
opponent tenant dealterm I would know my limit. My limit would be to have the damage fixed in a timely manner even if no compensation is included.
counterpart mechanic information you should provide estimates and invoices with the contact information of the person who gave you the expert advice.
counterpart contractor dealterm I would use it to better the outcome of our negotiations in repairing my home. I expect there to be no problems during the interaction with this contractor.
partner tenant dealterm I would write down my general goals of the negotiation: what can I live without and what is a must have?
partner contractor information I would not tell the contractor an exact amount of what I had to spend. I would say this is what I want, can you do this for such a such price?
opponent tenant demeanor I would be calm and tell the landlord about the problem. I would then give the landlord a specific amount of time to fix the issue and if after that time it has not been fixed, I would have my attorney send them a letter.
partner mechanic demeanor L would appear to be nonchalant about immediately repairing the car. Given that the car is driveable I would ask for a better price but be ready to leave if that fails to happen
partner mechanic dealterm I would come up with my limit on what im willing to accept, and then work up from there. I know that the mechanic knows that I will use strategy in my negotiations so I will also keep that in mind
counterpart contractor demeanor I would dress down, casual and not too flashy. I would just be my friendly self.
opponent contractor information I would do my own research about the process so I would be able to answer relevant questions and would be able to ask the right questions.
opponent mechanic information I think that maybe I could ask for a second opinion. Also, find out about a list of parts necessary for the job and see if I could find them myself at a lower cost.
counterpart mechanic information I would offer the mechanic less than what I wanted to pay and hope that he would counter with a higher price within my budget. I would not pay what the mechanic originally asked for
opponent tenant information I would ask explicitly what is covered by their insurance, and if water damage is part of it.
opponent mechanic information I know the shop is new so I would try to find out how busy they are. I think I could get a better price if they are not busy and in need of new business.
partner tenant dealterm I would put myself in the situation that the property management company (the partner) will say that they will not refund me the damages in my food and/or will take some weeks to come to the apartment to repair the whole in the wall where the mouse sneaked in. If this happens, I would put some temporary measures in the meantime. For example: put some tape in the whole to prevent mouse from sneaking in. Accept that the company won’t pay the damaged food
partner mechanic demeanor I would present myself as a knowledgeable consumer and I’d educate myself on the problem and on possible solutions so that my negotiating partner would respect me and deal with me fairly.
partner tenant demeanor I would make sure to have do my research about the lease I signed. I would tell the landlord that they are in breach of contract if they don’t make repairs and give credit for discarded items.
opponent contractor dealterm Without doubt both requirements must be met, there’s no compromising structural safety and water & electrical connection. I do think I would want more than one bid on the job. I’m hesitant about this contractor’s previous ratings. I’d want someone known to someone I trust. Though the friend of friend’s advice is invaluable.
opponent mechanic information I would be honest with them and say I received a second opinion. I don’t think you should lie to people about things like this, especially as a female when it comes to car issues I ALWAYS get a second opinion.
partner contractor dealterm I would look up the cost of materials from multiple vendors, and the cost of labor for this type of work. From there I would wait to hear what he proposes and then use the information I found to lower the cost he proposes.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I would convey that I am coming from the place of a responsible car owner that wants to cultivate a good working relationship with my mechanics. In order to do my due diligence qnd address issues with my vehicle and also build a working relationship with you, I need a path forward within my budget.
partner contractor demeanor I would let the contractor know my expectations
counterpart contractor dealterm I would take my bottom line into consideration and come up with a plan to achieve moderately higher than the bottom line. From there is where the negotiations would begin.
counterpart tenant dealterm I would definitely decide a point of what I’m willing to tolerate and what I’m not. I would also think about what to say when meeting with the property manager.
partner contractor demeanor I would be patient but firm in my requests. I would insist on quality work for the lowest possible price.

We also asked them what they thought of the advice they received. Here are their responses:

label sit_char adv_char thoughts
opponent tenant demeanor It is obvious. People will treat you according to how you present yourself.
counterpart tenant dealterm I think it was a good personal anchoring statement. I don’t think it necessarily helps in proposing a fairy solution though.
partner contractor information It was fair and just. I would be open to using this advice.
partner mechanic information I believe the advice was useful to let people save money instead of overpaying.
counterpart tenant information Be sure of what you want in the beginning..
counterpart mechanic information I thought the advice made sense because it directed me to try to sway the mechanic into offering a better price.
counterpart tenant demeanor I think the advice was good and helpful. I think it is a great idea to go into a negotiation with a plan and stick to it.
counterpart contractor information I would most likely approach the situation in the same way.
opponent mechanic information I think it’s good advice, but kind of obvious. Finding out more information about something is always good advice in terms of understanding and negotiating.
opponent contractor dealterm The advice didn’t offer much help as it’s basic negotiation strategy that I know about.
partner contractor information I thought the advise was a bit harsh but it makes sense considering how much money it costs to do these projects and to have a stranger in the home.
opponent tenant demeanor I think the advice is helpful because landlords don’t really care about you, they just care about your money. If you negotiate properly, the damage can be fixed quickly and the landlord can continue to get paid.
counterpart mechanic information honestly I don’t see how “negotiation” can affect a car repair issue. It needs fixing. I believe them, or I don’t. If I don’t, I can go elsewhere.
counterpart contractor demeanor It seemed average. Not sure it was really important.
opponent contractor dealterm The advice provided to the homeowner in the scenario is sound and relevant. It emphasizes the importance of setting clear limits and being mindful of potential red flags during the negotiation process.
counterpart contractor dealterm I feel like both the contractor and I are trying to achieve the same thing. We both want me to be happy with the work, with minimal re-work. So negotiations should be toward the same goal.
counterpart tenant dealterm I think the advice was helpful.
opponent tenant dealterm I am appreciative of the advice, but also willing to pursue a less hostile for both parties outcome.
partner contractor demeanor The advice made sense and I could see it working.
partner mechanic demeanor It makes sense. A lot is in the attitude (not a bad or aggressive one, just no nonsense. I think sometimes people give off vibes that they are less likely to “fight.”
partner tenant information It was what I thought about the situation already
opponent mechanic dealterm I think the advice that you should plan ahead of time what your limits are for negotiating is really good advice. Planning ahead at all about negotiating and knowing where your limits are ahead of time stops you from having to think on your feet about what price you would and wouldn’t take.
partner mechanic information Somewhat lacking in precise direction. No advice on demeanor or body language.
opponent tenant information The advice was pretty common sense.
opponent tenant information It is OK but I would seek more specific advice rather than negotiation skills which I already possess
opponent tenant dealterm I think the advice was solid but I think a friendly approach is the way to go and hope they return the kindness.
counterpart contractor dealterm It seemed like advice that makes sense when entering into a negotiation and is good advice.
counterpart mechanic information It was good advice in my opinion
counterpart tenant demeanor I thought it was basic, reasonable that most people would give.
opponent mechanic demeanor I think the advice was helpful but extremely vague lacking any examples.
counterpart tenant information The advice is good but there wasn’t any direct help regarding rules on tenant “habitable” laws. That is what I need is this situation.
opponent tenant information I would end up doing what I want anyways.
counterpart contractor demeanor I think it would help them respect you in negotiations.
partner mechanic demeanor I didn’t think it really pertained to this situation.
opponent contractor information I think the advice is a bit vague. As someone who has little experience with home repairs and negotiating with contractors, a thorough explanation would be helpful.
partner mechanic demeanor I would try to be truthful and firm. I would also be pleasant and reasonable
opponent tenant dealterm The advice was basically to understand the least acceptable outcome of the negotiation. I would not settle for that.
counterpart mechanic dealterm It was mildly confusing. It just made me more anxious.
opponent contractor information I’m not sure what this question means, exactly. If I were given further advice, I would take the information into account and see how it could potentially work when discussing price and time with the contractor.
opponent tenant dealterm I thought it was sound advice. It wasn’t surprising or anything super earth shattering so it was believable and also felt achievable for an average person.
opponent mechanic demeanor The advice was good and I found it to be very strategic.
opponent tenant information I think it’s decent advice but I already have a strategy in place.
opponent tenant information It seems obvious but its possible that I wouldn’t have thought of this advice before going into the negotiations.
partner tenant demeanor i would listen to what they had to say but probably go with my intuition when in the actual discussion.
counterpart tenant demeanor I am unsure as the advice had not been given.
partner contractor demeanor The advice was solid as I think it is important to have a plan and think about the negotiation process and how I want to come across.
counterpart mechanic information The general advice given was a good starting point as to what way to go, however, being I am not one to negotiate often at all it’s not something I am very comfortable doing even with advice given.
opponent contractor demeanor I don’t think the advice was particularly helpful. It didn’t give any advice on the actual negotiation and how to interact with the contractor.
partner mechanic demeanor The advice was was quite fair to both parties involved. I will say the advice is realistic.
partner mechanic dealterm The advice was helpful but as a woman I don’t know how useful it would have been for me. I am not a good negotiator when it comes to things like car repairs. I just cannot haggle at all.
partner mechanic information It just seems aggressive. Why would we haggle the price of a service? This is how that dealership makes their living.
opponent contractor demeanor It didn’t really say much. I didn’t actually give me anything I could do.
partner contractor dealterm The advice was good sound tactics for a negotiation. I liked that the advice didn’t involve me having to be dishonest or rude.
opponent contractor demeanor I thought it was good advice. To ask yourself how you would like to come across as a negotiator.
partner mechanic information I thought the advice was helpful in negotiating a deal with a mechanic.
partner mechanic dealterm It was good. I would try to apply it in my negotiations
counterpart mechanic demeanor That advice was very vague and not especially helpful.
counterpart tenant information It is a little vague. Theses should be technique’s that any adult should know.
opponent tenant demeanor I mean it seemed reasonable, to think about how you will be percieved.
counterpart contractor dealterm I think the advice is a good strategy to make sure I get what I want done for a fair price.
partner mechanic dealterm I thought it was sensible. It was advice I would follow.
partner contractor demeanor I would question the advice and go on Google to see what other people have done or would do. Negotiating a price of a home renovation is a big deal so I need to make sure I get quality work while also keeping a budget
opponent contractor dealterm I think the advice was a good general piece of advice on negotiating. It would not change my behavior or ideas of negotiating with a contractor.
partner contractor demeanor Believing that the CONTRACTOR is my Negotiator Partner. In that sense we are on the same team and we both want the best outcome. I answered the questions in that frame of mind. I think that’s a good plan. The Negotiation PROFESSIONAL wanted me to put my best self forward, and that would be my best self.
counterpart tenant dealterm I thought it was part common sense advice, part advice that made me think. Either way, I appreciate the advice as it was given on good faith.
opponent tenant demeanor While the wordage used in the advice was pretty generic, it got me interested in strengthening my negotiation plan.
opponent contractor demeanor I thought the advice would help me to have a good negotiation
counterpart contractor demeanor The advice is somewhat helpful and need more advice from scratch
partner mechanic demeanor I think the advice was quite helpful.
partner contractor information I thought it was somewhat helpful.
opponent contractor dealterm I thought it was okay, but it felt a little vague and I would prefer something more detailed.
partner mechanic dealterm It seemed helpful. It outlined a plan to follow when negotiating.
partner mechanic dealterm I thought that the advise of unhelpful. It told me that there was room to negotiate but not HOW to negotiate.
partner mechanic dealterm I think that the advice was fair and honest
partner mechanic information I think that the advice was helpful in telling me basic advice on how to negotiate. I would probably had liked some more in depth advice though in this situation.
opponent tenant demeanor I didn’t think the advice was very helpful since it was quite generic and obvious. The advice should’ve offered more specifics that was relevant to the situation.
counterpart contractor demeanor I thought it wasn’t too concrete but it helped to guide my thinking.
counterpart contractor demeanor It was useful, but a little too vague, insubstantial.
opponent mechanic information I think it was ok, but it didn’t emphasize seeking more information on the repairs needed
counterpart tenant dealterm I thought it good advice. Because I do think it is best to know your limits and to go in a negotiation with realistic expectations.
partner tenant information I think that the advice was good. I would add in my own ideas.
partner mechanic dealterm I think the advice seemed aggressive. Sometimes the nice way is the best way.
partner contractor dealterm I didn’t really understand it to be honest. Sure it was professional advice but it sounded obvious to me
counterpart tenant demeanor The advice was helpful in this situation.
counterpart contractor dealterm I think it was good advice but very generic. It would be better if the advice followed up with some sample negotiations.
opponent contractor information I thought it was some pretty obvious advise on what to do.
counterpart mechanic information I didn’t feel it was that great. Using common sense, you can usually negotiate well with anyone. As long as your offer appeals to them.
partner contractor demeanor I thought the advice was okay, but I wish it was more concrete and less abstract. I wish it had specific advice I could follow instead of general advice.
counterpart contractor information The advice, while good, is very vague and theoretical.
partner tenant demeanor The advice was too vague to be helpful.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I think the advice was solid as it goes. It was actionable and may have bene somewhat contrary to what my inital instincts were.
counterpart tenant information THE ADVICE WAS HELPFUL AND GAVE ME A STEPPING STONE TO WORK THE NEGOTIATION
partner tenant dealterm I think it was good advice though somewhat generic. I would hope for perhaps more specific advice on what would be reasonable to expect from the other party.
counterpart tenant dealterm I think the advice was vague and unhelpful.
opponent tenant information I thought the advice was good. It was basically just tell the truth and be firm.
opponent contractor information The advice was informative. But I need more help to follow through with the negotiation
counterpart tenant dealterm I agreed with the advice given.
counterpart contractor demeanor I thought it was generally helpful but not very specicifc.
partner contractor demeanor I’m not sure how helpful it actually would be. I wouldn’t have much of an idea of how to look like a good negotiator.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I thought the advice was realistic and to the point.
counterpart contractor information I thought it should probably be taken with a grain of salt but still be kept in mind
partner tenant demeanor I thought the advice was relevant to the situation.
opponent tenant dealterm I think it was good advice to go into ready to walk if the negotiation didn’t give the bare minimum you needed to stay in the apartment.
counterpart mechanic dealterm It was adequate advice and in many situations, it would be beneficial and useable. However, in dealing with automotive mechanics, I may hesitate.
counterpart contractor demeanor The advice was somewhat helpful but I am already fairly confident in my own abilities of communication and negotiation and am likely to follow my own instincts first.
counterpart contractor information The advice was helpful, namely to be sure that you have a list of questions and that you ask the right ones. But it was not very helpful because it didn’t give me any idea of what were the right questions to ask for a complicated kitchen installation involving water and electricity hookups.
opponent contractor demeanor I thought considering the impression you make is good advice. In this situation, I think pursuit of driving the hardest bargain would be a poor strategy unlikely to succeed.
partner mechanic information It’s always easier for a person to say yes than no. If you conduct yourself in a manner that gives the person a reason to say no, they will. But if you’re transparent and fair, most people will respond to yes. People in general feel better when they feel they have helped someone. No one wants to be devalued and it’s important to always respect a person’s worth.
partner contractor dealterm I think the advice was sound and overall good advice
partner mechanic demeanor I would take the related advice and get a second opinion. If two mechanic’s give the same diagnosis then you can be sure of what the problem with your car would be.
opponent mechanic dealterm It was beneficial to me, even if I wasn’t successful in negotiating in this particular situation. I could use that information down the road for something else.
opponent tenant information I was common sense advice that anyone would know.
partner tenant information I thought the advice was good because you can’t always go in guns blazing and expect things to go your way.
opponent contractor demeanor I thought the advice was very vague and didn’t provide me with a lot of guidance on specifically what to do or how to act in the negotiation.
opponent tenant dealterm It was a bit complicated and covered things, I didn’t think were needed.
partner tenant dealterm It was good advice that I had already intended to use.
opponent mechanic demeanor I thought that the advice made a lot of sense.
counterpart contractor demeanor I didn’t find the advice helpful because it was not specific at all and just super ambiguous.
opponent contractor demeanor I think it made sense, that how I show myself might affect the negotiation. If I’m unaware and unconfident I could get taken advantage of.
opponent mechanic dealterm I was still uncertain whether negotiation was possible.
opponent tenant information I think the advice might help me.
opponent contractor dealterm I think the advice helps to have a reference framework that you can use and adatp to your situation. It also gives you confidence since you have a good structure about where you are, where you wanna reach, where is your limit and what to say/use in order to bring the other side to you goal.
opponent mechanic dealterm I know what I want to do with my car
opponent tenant information I agreed with the advice, that I should come into the conversation as prepared and knowledgeable as possible.
counterpart tenant information I thought the advice was useful in this case.
partner mechanic dealterm The advice was pretty generic in nature and could probably be used in any negotiation setting.
opponent tenant dealterm The advice was smart, yet a little tough. You have to consider the source, an expert negotiator. While the intent was coming from a good place, the aggressiveness may not apply in this situation.
opponent mechanic dealterm The advice was great but could only be successful if the person was willing to act on the advice.
partner mechanic dealterm I think the advise is smart and is worthy of giving it a try because I would not have come up with a better idea.
opponent tenant demeanor I pretty sure advice would help.
counterpart mechanic information The adsvice was solid. Anticipating questions that may be asked on my counterpart made sense, I would apply that advice.
opponent contractor dealterm I thought it was ok. Not much detailed advice. The idea of having a hard limit on price I thought was good advice though.
counterpart tenant information It was generic but it’s a good starting point.
opponent tenant information It was somewhat vague. I would have also wanted advice on possible remedies that a tenant can realistically request.
opponent tenant information The advice was a little generic it did not give usufull information.
counterpart tenant dealterm That man don’t know my limits.
opponent tenant information I think the advice is something to be considered. I’m not very good at negotiations so I’m always open to any advice.
counterpart tenant demeanor I think it’s pretty naive. You have to be forceful when dealing with landlords and property management companies.
counterpart mechanic demeanor The advice didn’t really tell me much but I feel I’d know how to handle the situation.
counterpart contractor information The advice wasn’t that specific. I wish the advice wasn’t so generalized.
partner tenant demeanor The advice is correct about the importance of impressions. The impression you make, will create the boundaries of the negotiation. If you start of aggressive, chances are that your partner will close up and that is the end of negotiation.
opponent mechanic dealterm The advice seemed like general suggestion advice i didnt find it groundbreaking .
counterpart tenant dealterm The advice is a logical approach to the issue. Beyond involving a third party this would be my approach.
opponent contractor dealterm I would see the extra consult from a friend of a friend as helpful and reliabel.
counterpart contractor dealterm I thought the advice was sound and helped me get in a negotiation frame of mind.
opponent mechanic demeanor I think the advice would be somewhat helpful in developing my persona as a negotiator since the advice entailed knowing how I want to present myself to my “opponent.”
partner tenant information The related advice was slightly helpful, but with what I already kind of knew. Still, it was helpful, and it was from a professional, so following the advice whould hopefully prove worthwhile.
partner contractor information I thought the advise was helpful in helping me think of some ways that I would need to negotiate.
partner mechanic information I would use the advice to use at the car shop
partner contractor demeanor i think it was good advice to give to someone and fair to both parties
opponent mechanic dealterm I think it’s good advice if you are unaware of what the price should be and you believe they are trying to inflate the price in their favor.
partner mechanic demeanor I think the advice was very ambiguous.
opponent mechanic information I think that it is good advice to prepare for the negotiation in advance as it will prevent me from getting off track and help me pursue my interested outcome.
partner contractor dealterm Have trust in this contractor. Once an agreement is reached, do not settle for anything else.
opponent tenant demeanor I found the advice mostly obvious, but it’s nice to have the back up.
partner tenant information I thought it was good advice to not give any more information than what was necessary for the negotiation.
opponent contractor information The advice was very vague in general and didn’t really offer any actionable intel.
counterpart mechanic information The advice are helpful in the sense that it would help reduce my spending
counterpart tenant information I think it would work. The idea is to be nice no matter how you choose to negotiate.
counterpart contractor demeanor I take everyone’s advice very seriously and will decide if I use or not.
partner tenant information I thought it was helpful and nice for someone to have my back in a situation like this.
partner mechanic dealterm I think it was good solid advice to know what the worst deal is so that one can negotiate from there.
opponent contractor information I don’t know what I think of the advice
counterpart mechanic demeanor The advice is good and I would consider them.
partner contractor dealterm I felt the advise was practice and could keep me from committing to a deal that would not suit my situation.
opponent mechanic dealterm I thought it was reasonable and gave me room to come up with something clever to say
opponent mechanic information I would think my person would give me advice that would be in my favor
partner tenant demeanor I am happy to get any help; but, this help did not seem to do much for me. The advice was not very specific as to what I should do or how I go about doing what they suggested.
partner tenant information Generally helpful but I think I would’ve been confident to negotiate even without it.
partner contractor dealterm I think it’s pretty sound advice. I should know what my upper limit is for negotiating before meeting so that I can decide yes or no to the offer.
counterpart tenant dealterm I think it was thoughtful advice. I think it would help.
partner mechanic dealterm I think the advice was pretty vague.
partner tenant dealterm I thought the advice was pretty solid advice. Following it would be better than not following.
partner mechanic demeanor It was good general advice but not specific enough
counterpart contractor demeanor it was quite unique and provides good insight
partner tenant dealterm The advice was somewhat helpful, but a little to vague.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I guess it’s ok, there are some things that should and others that shouldn’t be negotiated
counterpart contractor dealterm i honestly don;t remember the advice im sorry
partner contractor dealterm I think the advice was pretty vague. It didnt give any real detail or help, just a general outline of how negotiations tend to work.
opponent contractor information I thought that the advice was helpful because it encouraged me to put myself in the contractor’s shoes and anticipate what may come up in negotiations to better prepare myself.
partner mechanic information I think the advice is smart, but also common sense. Getting as much information about your partner while divulging as little about yourself as possible would put me in a strong position.
opponent mechanic information I didn’t find the advice that helpful. It was pretty vague and outside of negotiating an hourly rate, the mechanic still has to make a living off of his work.
opponent tenant demeanor I think the advice sounded good, but was not really helpful. It felt more like platitudes than actual, concrete advice.
counterpart tenant demeanor I believe it was very true to what is needed in a situation like that. You have to state your case but also think about you come across in tone/emotion/words when trying to get a certain result…especially with landlords.
counterpart contractor dealterm I think it was just a guidance that I already know. It was not much about the exact project I planned to do at my home.
counterpart tenant dealterm I agree with it. It is how i enter negotiations.
opponent contractor information I don’t know that I could pull it off, acutally.
partner mechanic information I would appreciate any advice in this type of situation.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I thought it was somewhat helpful. But since I am not an expert I would want to check on the validity of this advice
partner tenant demeanor I thought the advice was pretty level-headed and reasonable given the circumstances.
counterpart contractor demeanor Any advice around a new situation can be helpful. But, it would have been more helpful to receive more concrete advice around how to negotiate effectivly.
opponent tenant demeanor The advice has been helpful and would have just been an additional element to concrete my intentions of negotiation.
partner contractor dealterm The advice was about the same as what I was thinking. I need to know what I can afford and what the contractor can afford (to some degree) in order to get a good price for both of us.
opponent contractor dealterm The advice solid. Have a limit that is hard set and do not negotiate past that limit
partner mechanic information It was fairly vague. I would have loved to hear some specific things to say.
opponent mechanic information i would try to work a deal to get my auto repair done
partner contractor dealterm I thought it was good advice. The adviser seemed competent.
counterpart tenant dealterm i think the advice was good to keep in mind to help me ensure that i reach my goal.
partner tenant information I thought it was good advice. I didn’t find it to be earth shattering advice though. It kind of seemed like common sense.
opponent mechanic dealterm I think that it is not very helpful, and a little over the time. You don’t need to negotiate, and if you do then you need another mechanic. Part prices are prices, and labor prices are prices - so you either accept it or move on.
opponent tenant demeanor I think it is good advice on how to handle difficult situations.
counterpart contractor information The advice was very vague and also obvious. It wasn’t very hepful.
partner mechanic information It seems fairly applicable towards the general situation.
counterpart tenant demeanor I thought the ad ice was helpful
partner tenant information I think it is good, but I am hesitant becuase of my personality and just wanting to please people.
partner contractor dealterm I think the advice had a lot of merit. You want to get the best deal.
counterpart tenant demeanor I thought the advice was vague, it was more of a thought experiment than advice. Better advice would have been to say what you mean, and get what you need no matter what
opponent mechanic demeanor I believe the advise would be helpful to me.
opponent mechanic demeanor The advice was thought provoking and gave me fuel for the negotiation.
partner contractor information Not much. I would not need a negotiation partner.
partner mechanic demeanor I felt the information was vague but it did encourage me to consider my typical body language in similar situations.
opponent mechanic demeanor The advice is pretty good in my opinion as far as negotiations go and that you need to change your behavior to fit the situation
opponent contractor information I don’t think the advice given was specific enough. The advisor could have offered examples.
opponent contractor dealterm The advice was good in general. It’s something I always keep in mind when negotiating.
opponent contractor information I did not like the advice. It was far too aggressive and would scare away a lot of good contractors.
counterpart tenant demeanor It was pretty generic. “Being conscious of your bargaining partner” is not really deep, you know?
partner contractor demeanor Any help in a situation like this will be very helpful. Can make the difference getting a god deal.
counterpart mechanic information It was good advice but I am already pretty good with dealing with negotiations.
counterpart tenant information I would be grateful for any related advice and try to use it in the negotiation.
counterpart mechanic demeanor I think the related advice was pretty un-specific.
partner contractor demeanor The advice made me hesitant to even see about installing the island on my home.
counterpart mechanic dealterm I thought that the advice was practical and that I would use it my negotiatiins.
opponent tenant demeanor I thought it made some sense but did not give me much in the way of details or tips. I would have liked to have received more information regarding strategies that have been successful in the past regarding similar situations.
opponent mechanic demeanor That was much more of a hard stance than I usually take.
opponent contractor demeanor I think it was fairly typical advice that doesn’t surprise me. I think it is good to have in mind, but there also needs to be flexibility for the situation in real time as it happens.
counterpart mechanic dealterm Again, I don’t know that negotiating the price would be my first move here. Market research first..
counterpart tenant dealterm It’s good IF you (a) emphasize that you might end up with the limit you set, i.e. make sure it’s actually acceptable; and (b) it doesn’t mention offering concessions at all, even ones I don’t care about.
partner tenant dealterm The advice given was fine. It’s smart to think beforehand what you are able to accept as a solution
counterpart mechanic information I feel you should use friendly negotiation to try and get a better price.
counterpart tenant demeanor I think it’s a fairly good advice, and it helped put me into a state of preparedness.
counterpart tenant information The advice inclined me to be prepared before the negotiation.
opponent contractor demeanor To me it was slightly useful. There was not any real punch to scope my position.
opponent tenant information Odd - why is there any “negotiating” I pay rent they fix the broken stuff.
opponent tenant information I think the advice was pretty common knowledge stuff and wasn’t anything I couldn’t figure out for myself
opponent contractor information I appreciate the advice. I would take it into consideration and practice the negotition with various avenues.
opponent tenant information The advice is good and appropriate. This is to help me send o table a proper request to the manager
opponent contractor dealterm I think the advice was helpful, but not helpful enough to teach me how to negotiate or give me a strategy.
opponent tenant dealterm I thought the advice was ok but vague and could pertain to any situation.
partner contractor dealterm i thought this advice was helpful, and the friend of a friend was trying to give me useful advice.
opponent mechanic demeanor The advice as nebulous and lacked substance.
counterpart tenant demeanor I felt like the advice was too vague. It was somewhat unhelpful.
counterpart tenant dealterm It was okay. The advice me feel as if I wasn’t going to have the best positive outcome.
partner mechanic information In my opinion, the advice was rather vague and too generalized to be helpful in this situation. The advice seemed too broad and not specifically tailored to this situation with the car repair and mechanic, and I thought it was lacking.
opponent contractor information It seemed like sound, logical advice that could be used to at least guide my approach to the negotiation.
partner mechanic demeanor I thought it was better then the repairman’s cost and made me hopeful that I could get the car fixed for a lower rate.
partner mechanic demeanor I thought the advice was good
partner contractor dealterm The advice is so so in my opinion.
partner mechanic demeanor I would use the advises I read in this text and defenetly be very carefull
partner mechanic information The advice made me think twice about the cost. Maybe there is a way we could come to an agreement.

counterpart tenant dealterm I would ask for repairs to be done but wouldn’t ask for money or a discounted rent rate. Landlords and property managers in buildings like this often will not take care of the property to begin with and just having things repaired would be better than nothing. If asking for a discount or refund in rent or money for the time and anguish this has caused may make them decline to fix anything.

counterpart contractor dealterm I’d let them know what I expected, my current budget and go from there. Hopefully this contractor will negotiate where we both “win”.
partner tenant dealterm I think the advice was really good and realistic
partner contractor information I wasn’t to keen on taking the advice. There was too much underhandedness and deceit when there was no cause other than to see what kind of deal and work they could get out of someone.
opponent tenant demeanor The advice was good but very vague. I would have thought a so called “expert” would have more to say.
partner mechanic demeanor If it’s an important car repair I would just tell the mechanic it was too pricey for me and to ask for a better price. Id probably go with whatever they asked for

partner mechanic demeanor The advice seemed reasonable and confirmed the way I thought I should approach the situation.
partner tenant demeanor It slightly helpful. Some things are just obvious.

opponent mechanic information I thought it was good, it gave me more confidence when talking to the shop mechanic about issues in my engine and timing belt.
partner contractor dealterm It’s decent advice. I would still be uncertain if the amount I came to was even close to what the project is worth. I would like more advice about how to evaluate project costs.

partner contractor demeanor I’m not sure if the advice was valid
counterpart contractor dealterm To take my bottom line of what I want, the least bottom line and negotiate from there. Never go below the bottom line.
