High-achieving girls are more popular than high-achieving boys. However, high achievers are the most popular students of all for both genders; they are the most central in the network. High achievers may be affluent, with enough cultural capital and wealth to be popular–other students may also wish to copy their homework.
The small sample size means limited generalize-ability, so an audience of teachers should use findings with caution. Socioeconomic data would greatly improve and clarify this analysis, because high-income students are often those who achieve the highest in school.
