Background

Participants read about one of three situations: Tenant-landlord issue (mice), contractor, and auto mechanic.
Then, they got one of three pieces of advice: deal-term related advice, demeanor related advice, and information related advice.

The advice is where the manipulation of label happened. These are the three pieced of advice:
Deal Terms
This first thing you need to know is that this [OP] is your [LABEL] in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully in advance about your limits. What’s the worst deal you could still live with from this [LABEL]? At what point would you be better off walking away and pursuing another [OP]? That’s your limit. Keep this limit in your mind when bargaining with your [LABEL].
Demeanor
This first thing you need to know is that this [OP] is your [LABEL] in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully about what impression you want to convey. How do you want this [LABEL] to see you as a negotiator? You might want to roleplay or practice in advance how you can make the right impression on the [OP]. How your [LABEL] sees you and feels about you can make a huge difference.
Information
This first thing you need to know is that this [OP] is your [LABEL] in this negotiation. With this [LABEL], I suggest you think very carefully in advance about what information you want to seek and what you want to share. What should you try to learn from this [LABEL] that could help you? What might the [OP] ask you during the negotiation … and how should you respond? Prepare in advance for the back and forth conversation with your [LABEL].

Then, we asked them to apply the advice to the situation in 1-2 sentences. And then, they completed the behavioral likert scales.

Main DV’s

As a reminder, we asked participants to rate the following behaviors on three dimensions: (1) How likely they are to behave that way in this scenario (alpha = 0.72); (2) How likely their OP is to behave that way in this scenario (alpha = 0.83); and (3) How effective will the behavior be in this scenario (alpha = 0.74).

1. Trying to mislead or deceive my negotiation opponent/partner about my negotiation priorities and positions
2. Being transparent, sharing truthful information about my negotiating priorities and position with my negotiation opponent/partner (R)
3. Acting in a tough, aggressive way toward my negotiation opponent/partner
4. Acting in a friendly, warm way toward my negotiation opponent/partner (R)
5. Trying to anchor the negotiation in my favor by putting forth an extreme proposal and refusing to budge
6. Pursuing a deal by offering my opponent/partner a proposal that is favorable to them (R)
R indicates that the item is reverse-scored

Components of behaviors

First, let’s break down our DV’s. Each DV has three components: Deceitfulness, Demeanor, Deal-term making. Let’s see the items again before jumping in.

Deceitfulness:
1. Trying to mislead or deceive my negotiation opponent/partner about my negotiation priorities and positions
2. Being transparent, sharing truthful information about my negotiating priorities and position with my negotiation opponent/partner (R)

Demeanor:
3. Acting in a tough, aggressive way toward my negotiation opponent/partner
4. Acting in a friendly, warm way toward my negotiation opponent/partner (R)

Deal-term making:
5. Trying to anchor the negotiation in my favor by putting forth an extreme proposal and refusing to budge
6. Pursuing a deal by offering my opponent/partner a proposal that is favorable to them (R)

R indicates that the item is reverse-scored

Efficacy

After these behavior measures, we asked participants to indicate how comfortable they would be to handle that situation without the advice.
The options were:
1. I wouldn’t really have any idea what to do or say in a negotiation like this
2. I would have only some idea of what to do or say in a negotiation like this
3. I would have a pretty good idea of what to do or say in a negotiation like this
4. I would know exactly what to do or say in a negotiation like this

This is the distribution overall:

And this is the distribution by scenario:

Efficacy as a moderator

Potentially, the advice would apply only to those who would seek it, or who wouldn’t know what to do in the situation. So, I’ll split efficacy to two (low is 1 and 2; high is 3 and 4), and then I’ll see if it moderates our main effects.

Open-text responses

After the advice and right before the behavior likert scales, participants wrote a couple of sentences in response to the following prompt:
How would you best apply this expert advice to your upcoming negotiation with the [LABEL]? Please provide a brief description of 1-2 sentences.

label sit_char adv_char behav_open
opponent tenant dealterm I would start my bargaining high to ge tthe most I can out of them.
partner mechanic information I would discuss different price options with the mechanic when it comes to parts price, labor, etc. I would also look up the work myself, to see if the price is reliable.
partner tenant information I would make them aware of the water damage that caused the hole and led to the mice. I would also be very mindful about providing him with information unnecessarily.
opponent tenant dealterm I would prepare what I want to say, and why the issue affects me. I would set limits on what I am willing to accept.
opponent contractor demeanor I am a very important person, and I used to be a mechanic. I will know if you do anything funny.
partner contractor information I would decide what is most important to me and what isn’t. I would then make my conversation focus on maximizing the valuable aspects that I’m concerned about and be willing to give up more in areas I don’t care about as much.
partner tenant demeanor I would write out a conversation and think of all the different scenarios and have something ready to say. I believe the negotiator is correct.
partner mechanic demeanor I’d say “I used to go to another shop. I’m in the market for a new mechanic for all of my issues. Since I plan to be a long term customer, is there anything we can do to reduce the $950 price?”
partner tenant demeanor I would take the approach of being calm and personable, while being assertive and to the point about my needs.
opponent contractor dealterm To remember that both of you have a price you think is fair. Hopefully you are comfortable in this discussion.
opponent tenant demeanor I would definitely write out what I want to accomplish with this negotiation and make sure I know what I’m willing to compromise on and what I’m not willing to compromise on. I would also read up on landlord-tenant laws so I can show the landlord that I’m educated on the law and won’t be steamrolled by them.
partner contractor dealterm I would sit down and figure out myself what I could and couldn’t live with in regards to this redesign and then be firm in my standing when it comes to those choices.
partner contractor dealterm I would use it as advice and see what the contractor price is and what his lowest bid would be
opponent mechanic demeanor I would ask my friend for their opinion of what a fair price would be for the new belt replacement, and where I should begin negotiations to arrive at the fair price without insulting or angering the actual mechanic I am dealing with.
partner mechanic information I would go into it with an open mindset
opponent tenant demeanor I would try to make sure that I get what I need out of the negotiation. I am fighting for myself.
partner contractor dealterm I would have a set price in mind of what I would be willing to pay and the amount that I would not be willing to go higher than. I would also get estimates of what this service normally goes for and try to get him/her to go lower than that.
partner tenant dealterm i make an account of the costs of the damages. I would then seek to identify rough estimates for the costs of the repairs. then i would have knowledge going into the meeting
opponent tenant information I would look into other tenants nearby and see if they have a similar issue. I would also ask around about the property manager and the best way to approach the negotiation with them.
partner mechanic demeanor I would say that I will think about it and take it to another mechanic to get a second opinion.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would set a maximum limit for the amount I am willing to spend first. After knowing this I would offer a lower price leaving room for the mechanic to haggle and hopefully get a price lower than my limit. If I could not receive this I would walk away
opponent mechanic demeanor I would likely prepare by doing some general research on the actual costs of the new part(s) - timing belt - along with getting a second opinion and costs for repair from an alternative mechanic shop. This would allow me to have greater knowledge and power at the negotiation table.
opponent tenant demeanor I would use words of compassion for the manager’s job. Be friendly and not come off demanding, use respectful words.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would hate to assume the person with expert knowledge is my adversary, but I would try anyway. If replacing a belt is basically $1000 I would need to know expected length of the part and why it’s so much less to repair.
opponent tenant dealterm I would be direct in asking for help in taking care of the mice problem. I wouldn’t be rude, but I would be clear in that my expectation is it will be taken care of.
partner contractor demeanor I wouldn’t apply what they said. First, if the contractor didn’t go look in the attic space to make sure the wall wasn’t load-bearing, I wouldn’t hire him as he doesn’t know if the wall can come down easily or if the price would “magically” increase because of needing a large header.
opponent contractor demeanor I would look up online how to seem deserving of respect to contractors. I would practice conveying exactly what I want with knowledge and confidence.
partner contractor dealterm Make sure to work with the contactor when negotiating, and be sure to educate yourself on the topic so you can make sure all bases are covered.
partner tenant demeanor I would bring up the fact that he my property was damaged because of this issue, and reiterate that these problems need to be fixed before other actions are taken.
opponent contractor information I would apply this advice by putting myself in contractor’s shoes and trying to visualize the conversation as if I were the contractor. I would then research on general material and labor costs to have an idea of how low or high I can negotiate.
opponent tenant dealterm i would use it as they know more than i do about negotiating
partner contractor demeanor I would do my best to read up on possible complications and costs associated with this kind of renovation. When talking to the contractor I would make sure to ask them about all of these concerns and see if they seem knowledgeable. I would makes rue to come off as confident and assertive then I would ask them questions to make sure they are qualified for what I hired them for.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would view the mechanic as my adversary and someone who is trying to take as much as possible from me while returning as little as possible in return. I would then do the same to them, I would ask if they could do the repair for half the price. Then expect them to offer a counter price.
partner contractor demeanor Ask many questions about this job. what’s the time frame for a job like this. Is the price you give a firm price. Will there be many workers here with you or is this a solo job.
opponent tenant information Research anything the property manager has given into in the past. Have they done previous repairs? Why?
opponent tenant information Mice carry fleas that could infect the people living in the building. You must get rid of the mice before anything bad happens.
partner mechanic information I would not negotiate, I would just explain that I would be getting a second opinion. You should always be armed with more information before you begin a negotiation.
partner mechanic information I would start by asking how the price is broken down between parts and labor. Based on that response I would offer to obtain parts myself to save some money.
partner contractor demeanor I would make sure that I am working with the contractor, not against them. I would tell them what I plan to do and I would listen to any suggestions they have to make regarding how to get it done.
partner contractor demeanor Work with them as a partner in the project. Understand what your needs are as the customer and their needs as a vendor.
partner contractor dealterm From my friend’s advice I would have a contract in place and have the contractor sign that way he is required to do his job. If he’s not fine with that then I walk away.
partner mechanic information I would find out exactly which belts need replacing and google it to see if the mechanic is quoting me a fair price.
opponent tenant dealterm I would use this advice to confront the landlord with confidence knowing that if they don’t pay for the fees I will either leave and find a new place to live or sue due to poor living conditions.
opponent contractor information I would think that it is all just business, and we are both trying to get what we want. I want to pay the least, and he wants to receive the most, so we will both just have to bargain hard to get our own needs met.
opponent tenant information I would try to haggle with the manager and find a resolution that benefits us both. If the damage caused by the mice warrants rent credit, I’d try to negotiate a middle-ground price.
opponent contractor demeanor I would think very carefully how I want to approach the negotiation. I would also write down what I think I want to say and practice the negotiation with my friend.
partner tenant information I would try to make sure that everything worked well. I would try to organized everyone together.
partner contractor dealterm Hard to say, his advice was pretty vague. My impression is he doesn’t think very favorably about this contractor if he’s already talking about examining what do to when considering breaking ties with this guy.
partner tenant information Hi property manager! The mice caused property damage and food damage to my pantry. A discount of $100 off my rent, cleaning up the mess and fixing the property damage in thirty days will help me resolve this matter.
opponent tenant demeanor I am going to make sure that they see me as someone that means business. Someone who knows my rights and will fight for them.
opponent tenant demeanor I don’t know if I see my manager as an opponent, I feel that me and the manager can work together for a mutually agreeable solution without seeing each other as adversaries. I would treat him with respect rather than as an adversary.
partner tenant information I wanted to bring to your attention about the presence of mice in the apartment. I would appreciate it if we could discuss possible solutions to address this issue.
opponent contractor dealterm I would tell him that the contractor is the enemy in the negotiation. My advice would be to to be very careful about his limits with this opponent.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would start off stating that I have limited funds and ask if they have a discount. Then the mechanic would likely offer a small percentage off. I would then ask for an increase in the discount and see what he comes back with.
partner mechanic dealterm I would ask the mechanic if its at all possible to replace the belt as i am on vacation with my family and the most i can spend is $800. See if that is something he is willing to do.
opponent tenant demeanor I would be professional but friendly so I can get my points across that this is an issue that needs to be taken care of. I would show them the problem and tell them that the hole needs to be fixed and that I would also like testing done to make sure there is not black mold or another issue from water damage. I would not come into the interaction acting like the property manager is my friend or on my side because I know their only concern is their bottom line and they do everything as cheaply as
opponent tenant dealterm I’d be careful about communicating with the property manager. But also do not be afraid to settle for less than I’m willing to live with.
partner mechanic demeanor I would look up the price of a new belt and then compare it to his price and see the service fee cost
opponent contractor dealterm I would know my true limits and budget but tell the contractor a lower number then that, to get a better offer. I would also get multiple quotes and bids from other contractors as well.
opponent mechanic dealterm I will ask him to rear the car with $400 for the better belt or $100 for the lower quality belt.
partner contractor demeanor I would use him to tell me the prices and what things should cost to have things done. I would also use him to make sure that the structures are not only up to code but are best practices and the materials are not cheap or corner cut
opponent contractor demeanor I would give a very firm handshake and make DIRECT eye contact when I meet him. When we talk, I’ll stand straight, widen my stance and lift my chest in order to look strong and dominating.
partner tenant demeanor I think they should change their plans according to the manager’s choice.
partner tenant demeanor I would approach the issue in that I would want to show I was willing to solving this together. I would want to convey that I was a positive force in the remediation of the problem. I would want to show that I am easy to talk to and not jump to conclusions. I would be cautious as to exactly what demands I would make and not over step and ask for far more than what would be prudent in this particular situation - in which a mouse was entering the property and causing some damage to food.
opponent tenant dealterm I would go into it with my standard of what I expect out the negotiation and if I am not satisfied, will move to another apartment.
opponent tenant demeanor I would try to rehears what I want to say before I go to the meeting with the property manager.
partner tenant information Think of the property manager as an ally instead of an enemy. Try to think of a request that he would find acceptable.
partner tenant dealterm I would take pictures of the damages and prepare points on paper to discuss with the property manager. I would begin the conversation assuming that they also want to rectify this situation quickly and without drama.
partner contractor dealterm I would approach the situation (discussing the project with the potential contractor) with compassion, a firm boundary in my mind but being willing and flexible to negotiate because home renovations always end up costing more than you think they will. I would expect the contractor to also meet me with flexibility and honesty.
opponent contractor information I would stick to business points, he is not my friend. I would lay out what I want and do not want and ask the cost direct and up front.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would set a cap of how much i want to pay, such as 200 dollars. If this mechanic does not help me for that price after negotiating then i will go to another mechanic.
partner mechanic information I should ask the mechanic for the price range of new belts and help me choose the most affordable option that would work for me.
partner contractor information I would talk with the contractor about what I want and what they are capable of doing. I would present them with what I think is a fair price after doing research and communicate with them until we come to an agreement.
opponent mechanic dealterm I think I would take my friend’s advice and ask the mechanic if there was a cheaper price out there for the new belts. Where they were purchasing the belts or if we could find them cheaper.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would need to figure out a price point that’s worth negotiating over l. I have to determine if the price they mentioned is worth paying for or would it be best to look for another mechanic that may have cheaper prices.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would be tactful but firm with the mechanic. I would tell them that I have a budget in mind and that he is way out of line with my budget at this point.
partner mechanic dealterm I would ask why a belt replacement cost so much and any belt replacement would only be guaranteed to be good for 3 month or or so. This mechanics number make no sense and I would “call” them on it.
opponent contractor demeanor I would roleplay and also line up a series of questions. I would strike a balance in the negotiation, the contractor needs to feel like they got something in the deal, otherwise they could end up doing sloppy work.
opponent contractor dealterm Do not give in too easily. Make them have to work for it at the very least.
opponent contractor information I don’t think I would. I think I’d rather rely on my charm. I don’t want an adversary, I want a business partner, and I think I can achieve that by being upfront and friendly instead of confrontational.
opponent tenant dealterm I would start with my negotiation requests at a high level, meaning asking for compensation from damages. I would approach it in a fair way and wait for a response to see if they met my requests. In the back of my mind I must consider I may only get a minimal resolution and it will be my choice at that time whether I would like to continue renting from them or not.
partner mechanic information I would ask questions based on the differences, asking the mechanic to explain why fixing now wouldn’t mean it’s fixed later. I would also think use the said advice to limit what I tell the mechanic. For example, I would not tell the mechanic I am not near home.
partner contractor demeanor I wouldn’t show all of my cards to the contractor, instead I would make them feel comfortable by making small talk, cracking a few jokes, etc. I would soften them up a little before making hard demands.
partner tenant information I would want to look at my landlord as a partner and not an opponent. I would work with them and let them know that this is a new issue and disclose how I found out about it. I would share everything I knew because there’s no reason not to in my opinion.
opponent contractor dealterm I will walk away from this contractor and look for another one who’s willing to do some negotiation with his own limits and I will follow the advice of the expert who is a friend of friend for me , Because he will show his skills , Like what he is capable of and he will give me some best advice for my modular work as well.
opponent tenant demeanor I would do research on the property manager and the agreements that I signed to identify any weaknesses. I will then use these exploit these weaknesses in order to get what I want.
opponent contractor information I wouldn’t apply this “expert advise” to this particular “negotiation”. I want to be very open and upfront about the renovations I need completed and what I’m willing to pay for it. Withholding information from a potential contractor will not lead to a positive outcome with respect to price paid or the job itself.
opponent mechanic information I would remain calm and stern when I talk with the mechanic. I would look up the price of the belts that are needed to be replace and say something along the lines of “950, for belts that cause less than 100? I’m sure you can go lower than 950.”
partner mechanic dealterm I would say I have another shop to check on first, once I check i will let them know. I wouldn’t be too harsh with them but in my mind I would assume they are ripping me off.
opponent mechanic information I would want to do some research into how long these repairs usually last, and how much they cost. The mechanic just needs to be in line with that. If I for some reason can’t do this ahead of time, I’d let the mechanic know I want to get a second opinion elsewhere before deciding. It sounds like the car is still usable for the moment, since I’ve driven for days or weeks on it. Checking another mechanic should be fine.
partner contractor information I would go thru all that I am trying to accomplish with the remodel. Id ask about the wall removal, asking them how they go about determining if its a load bearing wall or not. What their “Plan B” is if as they start removing it problems pop up. I would then ask about any water or electrical changes have to happen to get this all done.
partner tenant demeanor I would write out what I want to say. Then I would take the expert advice and practice in front of the mirror so that I can see how I might be coming across with facial expressions.
partner contractor dealterm The expert advice suggests to consider the contractor as a partner in the negotiation and to determine in advance one’s limits and the point at which walking away from the deal would be preferable. This should be kept in mind during the negotiation to ensure a fair and satisfactory outcome.
partner contractor information I would ask the contractor many questions about what worked best in the past for him. I would also ask him/her about their own house and what they would do if my home were their home. I would ask them what they would do if money were no object, for reference.
partner mechanic dealterm I would first assess what I feel a fair cost for the service is in my head. After doing so, I would rebuttal the mechanic’s offer with an amount I feel is fair and respectful with the hopes that we can meet somewhere in the middle.
partner mechanic information I would ask the mechanic questions about the pros and cons of each decision. I would try not to give him too much information but instead listen to what he has to say.
opponent mechanic demeanor Be smart and calm, don’t look nervous. Know your information when it comes to costs.
opponent mechanic information I would get a second opinion on that price first. There is no way that I would pay them to install new parts that weren’t needed yet.
partner tenant information As a partner with the property manager, we both want to keep this apartment in good shape with no mice. When can they get that done?
opponent tenant demeanor I would be nice, but also be firm on the price you have set in mind.
opponent contractor dealterm I would attempt to get some ball-park estimates from several other sources before meeting with contractor so that I could go into the negotiation meeting with a strong position. Otherwise, I would be in a much weaker position.
opponent contractor dealterm I would want to put in a lower price than my limit with the contractor immediately to set expectations and take control of the negotiation. I would work the price up to the limit as discussions continued.
partner tenant demeanor I would use “we” when discussing the problem so as to create a situation where neither is the center of the issue, but the “tenants” are. I would hope that my actions allowed the manager to feel as though I was not overstepping and that ultimately they were in control.
opponent contractor dealterm I would determine my ceiling and not go above it. I would not view the contractor as a partner or anyone else that I need to acquiesce to. I would move on if he cannot meet my budget.
opponent tenant demeanor I would practice being a stern negotiator who does not take no for an answer. I would make sure I could handle someone rejecting me and then still continue negotiating.
opponent tenant information Before negotiating with the property manager, I will consider the impression I want to convey which will ensure my concerns are taken seriously and practice roleplaying to ensure that I make a good impression and maintain a strict relationship with my opponent.
opponent contractor dealterm I would the contractor how much would it cost me and then try to lower it to an amount that is on my budget and that I am willing to pay. Once I see that the price is going up too much then I would thank the contractor and look for someone else.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would ask more about the two repairs since I don’t have much knowledge on it and determine if either one or the other is the best option. I’d ask if he’s willing to budge on price. From there, I’d start negotiation.
partner contractor information I would come up with a list of questions for the contractor to answer about the project. I would also be prepared to get his estimated prices and research them further.
partner tenant demeanor i would tell the property manager the amount I am comfortable paying. I would negotiate until an agreement is met.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would try to access how the mechanic think about my knowledge of the problem and what is involved in fixing it. Then I would ensure that I appear very confident.
partner tenant demeanor I would approach the situation calmly and state what was going on. I would not be hostile or overly emotional. I would leave the situation on the table to see what they first offer and go from there.
opponent tenant dealterm I would first outline to the property manager just how harmful the state of the building could be to me the tenant. The issues with the mice could mean diseases could mean damage to electronics etc.
partner tenant demeanor I would first practice out the encounter with my friend. I would likely try a couple of different approaches to see which one I think would work best.
opponent mechanic information I would ask if 950.00 is the best price that he can offer me. In addition, I would ask if there were any rebates on the belt he was offering and that I would be getting other quotes as well.
opponent contractor demeanor I would try to negotiate the best price by being factual and presenting myself as knowledgeable
partner mechanic dealterm I would want to pay a lower price than $950 but I would still want to be fair to the mechanic. I think the highest I would go would be $750.
opponent mechanic dealterm I would take the experts advise and apply it to my situation in relation to the car. I would try to learn as much about the problem my car has and ways it can be fixed and use this with the experts advise in my negotiation.
opponent mechanic demeanor I don’t view the mechanic as my opponent. I realize the mechanic has a family and must make a living. I don’t start negotiating adversarily.
partner contractor dealterm I think that making sure that the island is properly installed is the most important aspect here. With this being said, I would make sure to negotiate but ensure that the job will be completed in a quality manner.
partner tenant information I’d make an inquiry about the estimated time it would take to send a repairman over and how long the repair service would take, I’d also ask what steps can be take by both parties (including me) to avoid this situation in the future, along with requesting extermination services (for the mouse, now potentially mice) and compensation on next months rent for the major inconvenience.
opponent mechanic information I will apply or use the expert advice because I know it will help me in reducing the cost of fixing the issues.
partner mechanic information The mechanic gave me a price to replace the belts, which I felt was high. So personally, I would make an effort to possibly reduce the price to $500. However, to be quite honest, I have never been in this station before, so there’s a bit of a trust issue. In that case, after being told that he could perform somewhat of a fix, for a much lower price, that would last a year or two, I would accept that option and then take the car to my regular station to see what they think.
partner mechanic information I am going to bring in all my cars to you and give you business , Also I will refer you to my friends. Why dont I get some discount this time
opponent mechanic dealterm I would start out with the fact that i cannot afford $950 dollars to fix it based on the estimate and ask about using aftermarket parts rather then using factory oem parts, i would make the mechanic a lower price offer like $450 stressing that im ok with aftermarket parts rather than the oem parts.
opponent mechanic demeanor It seems like I would want to come off as reasonable, friendly, and knowledgeable (at least for a layman). I would not want to come off as antagonistic, rude, or naive. Reasonableness and friendliness are universal positives that people respond well to, and giving off an impression that I know what I’m talking about would give more weight to my side of the negotiation.
opponent mechanic dealterm I will see if he could drop it down by 100. If not I may look elsewhere.
partner mechanic information I need to listen to the mechanic and see if there is any indication that he would be inclined to participate in a back and forth negotiation. Perhaps, he might say something about how busy or slow business has been That night be a way to find out if he is really hurting for money or if he is flush with money. There might be other indicators, such as telling him you would like to get the car fixed so it lasts for a longer period of time, but you are a little shorr on money at the present time.
partner contractor dealterm I would research all the possible things that could go wrong and see if the contractor has contingency plans for those things (to gauge at what point I would walk away from the deal). I would mentally set my highest possible budget for this service and start with a much lower offer to the contractor, to see if we can stay under the ceiling I’ve set
partner mechanic information i will put it to him if he could fix it and get it done at once by purchasing and fixing it for half the price, his response in the conversation will determine if further negotiations would continue, it depends on his acceptance or disapproval of the price started for the purchase of a new one, but if he insists on adding to the said price, then i will think of what next to be done on the issue.
partner contractor information I would ask the contractor if they have experience taking down walls and how knowledgeable they are regarding connecting a kitchen island to water and electric. I’d then ask them if they had any before/after photos of similar work done for other clients. Then I would ask for a ballpark range for what this would cost.
opponent contractor information I will research the contractor in advance and prepare questions to ask them about the work they have done in the past, as well as their qualifications to ensure they are able to complete the job to my satisfaction. I will also prepare my answers to their questions in order to ensure that I am able to get the best deal and avoid any potential surprises.
opponent contractor information I would recite in my head exactly what I was going to say to the contractor. I would also use it as leverage since I know a bit more about them now.
partner mechanic information It influences my decision that I’m able to negotiated for lower prices while still get a full repair
partner contractor information I would be on the defensive trying to get the best for the money I can use
partner contractor demeanor I would make sure I am fully aware of the structure of my house, if this means obtaining blue prints or something along those lines, just to familiarize myself where things like water lines are or where you can run them, for example. Also, I would maybe call around and just get ball park pricing from other local companies. Being prepared or even just sounding prepared, I personally feel, makes it harder for someone to take advantage.
opponent tenant dealterm I would try to negotiate with the landlord and request an inspection before closing the deal.
partner contractor demeanor I would make the contractor think I am strict in my desires. He sees me as a person who does not budge very much at negotiations.
opponent mechanic information When negotiating with the mechanic about fixing my car, the important to think ahead about what information i want to know and what i’m willing to share. This way, i can have a more productive and successful conversation with the mechanic. It’s also helpful to think about what questions the mechanic may ask and plan my answers in advance.
partner tenant demeanor To ensure a successful negotiation with the property manager, I must first reflect on the image(powerful and fearless) I want to present and prepare by rehearsing beforehand.
opponent mechanic information I would first tell the mechanic I will need to make some calls first. (this might make him nervous and offer a discount) but also I would call anyone I know who has experience with cars to make sure I am getting the best deal from the mechanic. If so, would ask for a lower price because I don’t think he would want to lose my business.
opponent tenant information I would sit down with a pad of paper and brainstorm how to handle the situation. I would look over my rental agreement to see if pest eradication is mentioned and the procedures for getting the damage repaired. I would also take photos of the damage from the radiator in the bedroom as well as any damage done to personal items. If I believe to be met with resistance by the property manager I should be prepared to collect signatures from neighbors and other renters to document their struggles.
partner tenant demeanor I would dress professionally. I would have a clearly written document describing the problem specifically and how I would like the problem resolved. I would like to try to conduct the negotiation without high emotion.
partner contractor demeanor When viewing the contractor as my partner, I can bring up mutual goals that we both have for completed the job. This way the contractor will see that we’re both on the same side which makes negotiation easier.
opponent tenant demeanor I would want to portray myself as amicable. I would talk to the property manager and try to persuade them to fix the situation and give me a credit on my rent because not only are they supposed to do it, it is the right thing to do. I would be firm as possible and only mention that I would escalate if they are not cooperative.
partner mechanic dealterm My goal in the upcoming negotiation with the mechanic is to leave a positive impression and maintain a good relationship. To achieve this, I plan to accept some loss.
opponent tenant demeanor I would pracitce and come across as competent as possiblle while at the same time leaving open leaves for both sides. I would also run it by my friend and playact it with him.
opponent contractor information I would start out by outlining what it is but I want done and then ask them what exact steps they would take in order to get that done. I would have researched comparable rates in the area and use that to negotiate a price.
partner tenant demeanor Before speaking with the property manager, I intend to think about the amount of money I would be willing to loss especially I want to make a favorable impression and maintain a healthy tie with him.
opponent contractor dealterm

Since my priority is to make sure that the changes don’t cause any structural damage to the house and that the kitchen island will be properly connected to my house’s water and electric systems.

If they can not ensure these two parameters, I would abandon the project.

We also asked them what they thought of the advice they received. Here are their responses:

label sit_char adv_char thoughts
opponent tenant dealterm The advice was ok it didnt really help me out.
partner mechanic information It wasn’t the most clear advice, in my opinion.
partner tenant information It was good advice. It is important to be thoughtful about how the situation might play out before actually being in the conversation.
opponent tenant dealterm I think it is good to be prepared when going into a negotiation.
opponent contractor demeanor It is a pretty okay advice. I would rather use some other advices, such as act tough, but this one is okay.
partner contractor information I felt it to be decent advice. However, it was pretty vague and not overly tangible.
partner tenant demeanor I thought the advice was fantastic and I would follow exactly what he said.
partner mechanic demeanor I really wasn’t sure how to apply the advice. It made sense, but I needed specifics.
partner tenant demeanor I thought it was good, if not a little vague.
opponent contractor dealterm I thought to take the info with a grain of salt. Not everyone os looking to screw the buyer over
opponent tenant demeanor The advice was okay, but it was pretty vague and general.
partner contractor dealterm I thought it was great advice because it told me to decide what I could and couldn’t live with and stick within those parameters. That way I don’t end up putting myself in a bind.
partner contractor dealterm It was ok, not sure I would sue the advice
opponent mechanic demeanor I believe that the advice is accurate, as the mechanic I am dealing with is new to me and a large portion of the cost in auto repairs comes in labor.
partner mechanic information it was usueful but not specific
opponent tenant demeanor I thought it was kind of tough.
partner contractor dealterm I think the advice was okay, but not great. It as pretty straight-forward but didn’t offer any insight into how to get the best deal for myself.
partner tenant dealterm i believe it was good advice. Worthy of considering for the meeting
opponent tenant information I thought it was good input for the situation. Its good to sort out the people you are negotiating with.
partner mechanic demeanor You have to try to get a negotiation going with them
opponent mechanic dealterm The advice is very similar to what I would have done in this situation anyway
opponent mechanic demeanor I thought the advice was encouraging, and helped to sharpen my message about lowering costs of repair to the mechanic shop.
opponent tenant demeanor I was advised to remain friendly and calm. This is great advice in all negotiating situations so I was happy to receive it.
opponent mechanic dealterm Again, context is king. I don’t know enough about cars but that’s fine; I can just find a car guy. The cost of a motor vehicle failure at operating speeds may be more than just some extra money.
opponent tenant dealterm I thought it was useful advice, but I don’t like the idea of being adversarial. The landlord should handle it. That would be my stance.
partner contractor demeanor I think that advice doesn’t fit with the real life scenario and I would disregard it.
opponent contractor demeanor I think it is a good framework to learn more about how to negotiate with a contractor
partner contractor dealterm It is pretty basic advice, its the same level as telling someone to wear a seatbelt. Its good advice but is it really doing anything?
partner tenant demeanor I thought that it was helpful.
opponent contractor information I think the advice would be helpful as it presents a different way of thinking.
opponent tenant dealterm it was not very helpful and i did not see how it would help
partner contractor demeanor I thought the advice made sense and I wwas willing to follow it.
opponent mechanic dealterm I thought it was a bit too aggressive and trying to find an agreement that favors both parties is often more beneficial.
partner contractor demeanor Its true you need to be on the same page with this negotiation, you can’t be a difficult person and neither should the other person because that will get you or the other person no where and just strain the relationship going forward.
opponent tenant information I didn’t really think it was very helpful advice. I would have liked more specific information about what to to to win.
opponent tenant information the advice was vauge and very basic
partner mechanic information It may be useful in scenarios where the other party has no incentive to get you to pay more than necessary or in a scenario where you’ve had the opportunity to research, such as salary negotiations.
partner mechanic information I did not think that it helped very much. It seemed like common sense.
partner contractor demeanor The advice was helpful because I honestly have no idea how to deal with contractors on my own.
partner contractor demeanor I thought that the advice was ok. It was helpful but every day is different.
partner contractor dealterm I agree with the advice. The contractor sometimes doesn’t live up to his deal. I would bring it up and have him sign a contract otherwise I walk.
partner mechanic information I felt that it was so vague that it could have applied to anything, not just dealing with the mechanic.
opponent tenant dealterm I think the advice was helpful. It was able to tell me that this isn’t my only option and that there are other outcomes if things don’t go the appropriate way.
opponent contractor information I think the advice was rather adversarial. Like, can’t two people just get along and collaborate and come to a mutually acceptable conclusion? My friend acted like I was going to war.
opponent tenant information The advice is counter-intuitive. It’s not a good idea to treat your landlord like an “opponent”.
opponent contractor demeanor The advice was not that helpful and only stated what most people know. I think the advice should have been more specific.
partner tenant information I thought it would work. I thought it made sense.
partner contractor dealterm It wasn’t very helpful. I would need very specific advice since I haven’t navigated a process this complex before.
partner tenant information It was helpful for me to draw up a plan because I wanted to present my case and offer a resolution.
opponent tenant demeanor It wasnt anything that I needed to hear as that is obvious.
opponent tenant demeanor I wasn’t fond of seeing the manager as an opponent. We should be working together because he wants a well maintained building as much as I do.
partner tenant information The advice would be quite helpful.
opponent contractor dealterm I thought the advice was good and empowering.
opponent mechanic dealterm It is helpful to get advice but let’s face it. Your car needs fixing if you want to drive. I don’t see the car owner as the power in the negotiation. The best I think that the owner can get is a small percentage.
partner mechanic dealterm I would see if the mechanic can do any better of a price. My business and him dropping the price is best for both of us. Otherwise i could just take my business elsewhere and he would be out money.
opponent tenant demeanor The advice that I was given was true and very beneficial and is something good to remember knowing that the property manager only cares about their bottom line.
opponent tenant dealterm I think it was good advice and in the common sense arena.
partner mechanic demeanor i think its not entirely true. I should do my own research on costs.
opponent contractor dealterm Fairly straightforward, but I think it’s always cruicial to get more opinons and more offers and compare. Never go with 1 quote/visit, see what their competition can do.
opponent mechanic dealterm I think it greatly helpful. I will spead the words to friends.
partner contractor demeanor I ould be thankful for it. However i owuld also do my own research as i think trust but verify and come back with questions of my own
opponent contractor demeanor I think it was intense advice without ant real detail or instructions.
partner tenant demeanor I think they might think different.
partner tenant demeanor I think the advice was good advice.
opponent tenant dealterm I think the advice was sound and helpful
opponent tenant demeanor It was good advice although maybe common sense.
partner tenant information I think the advice is very good. It completely changed my mindset and attitude.
partner tenant dealterm I disagree that the property manager is my partner. The bottom line for them is cost and avoiding a complaint.
partner contractor dealterm The advice was reasonable and made sense. It’s information to rely upon as I move forward with respectful and educated negotiations.
opponent contractor information It makes sense. The person hired is not my friend stick to business is the correct call.
opponent mechanic dealterm I think the advice is okay, but fails to take into account many parts of interactions that take place in mechanic shops. It also seemed very common sense.
partner mechanic information Too many words, too little concrete information.
partner contractor information The advice was a basic description of what to do in a negotiation. If you didn’t know anything about negotiating it would maybe be helpful.
opponent mechanic dealterm I think it was great advice. When you’re young and inexperienced dealing with mechanics, it can all be very confusing and unknown territory. So having advice is very helpful.
opponent mechanic dealterm I though that this was good advice when it comes to negotiating. Its important to be open to other options to find the best price for your budget.
opponent mechanic demeanor I would try the advice. If it didn’t work, I would seek a second opinion from another mechanic and see what his charges would be for the service.
partner mechanic dealterm the advice wasn’t helpful, as it was not logical or make sense.
opponent contractor demeanor It was helpful and good reminder that negation is adversarial at first until a deal is reached.
opponent contractor dealterm I thought the advice was informative. I believe the advice given will help to produce a favorable outcome.
opponent contractor information I thought the advice was bad. I think treating people like your enemy makes them want to fight you harder.
opponent tenant dealterm The advice is on track with how I view it as well. I probably wouldn’t be as extreme because I hate moving but it helped confirm that I would handle it in a similar way. It gave me confirmation that what I was going to do wasn’t too extreme in behavior.
partner mechanic information I think the advice could have been more helpful in a different situation. It did help some, mostly, the advice to think about what information you wish to give
partner contractor demeanor I think it is more common sense than anything. You don’t want to anger the person you are negotiating with.
partner tenant information I felt that the advice was relatively helpful in the sense of looking at my landlord as a partner.
opponent contractor dealterm it will be helpful for me because it will save some of my money.
opponent tenant demeanor I don’t think the advice was specific enough for me. I would like a more well-defined strategy.
opponent contractor information Again, I didn’t like the advice and believe it will not lead to a positve outcome.
opponent mechanic information Great advice but, it would of helped more if more advice was given on how exactly to act this situation.
partner mechanic dealterm It was fine, I think it’s different depending on where you go though and just having another quote in this case would be the best bet.
opponent mechanic information The advice seemed overly generic or obvious, I guess? I think advice specific to the situation would be much more actionable.
partner contractor information I think the advice gave me a leg up on how to approach this. Id really have only a small background in such a thing and the advice would be extremely helpful. I would feel at least in my head that I am entering this negotiation on at least a firm ground and equal position.
partner tenant demeanor I thought the advice was on point. It is important to come at a situation like this from a positive stand point.
partner contractor dealterm Before receiving the expert advice, I would have been unsure about how to handle the negotiation with the contractor. However, the advice provided clear guidance on considering the contractor as a partner and determining one’s limits beforehand, which helped me feel more confident and prepared for the negotiation.
partner contractor information I think the advice is a sound method to approach a partnership of sorts, where both will benefit from being fair and transparent. However, in the real world, this may not always work, but usually there are several contractors to choose from, so trying to find the most cooperative “partner” would be a good idea.
partner mechanic dealterm I would be incredibly appreciative. I tend to be very anxious in negotiations and whatever help I got I would appreciate a great deal.
partner mechanic information I think the adive was hlpful. It only makes sence to be fair and pleasant.
opponent mechanic demeanor I typically try to take it into my mind and use it. Some situations it may actually benefit and I can twist it how I need to.
opponent mechanic information You cannot treat a mechanic like an opponent, as they hold all the cards in the situation. Since the mechanic is most likely a man, if you are nice to them they will give a discount.
partner tenant information I think it was great. I’ll remember it for the future! Thank you!
opponent tenant demeanor I thought it was realistic and something that could be used in the future.
opponent contractor dealterm It depends on who offered the advice and why, and their level of expertise in the subject, and whether they have a vested interest in influencing me.
opponent contractor dealterm I thought the advice helped a bit, but was still pretty general to the situation.

opponent mechanic information I will make use of the advice to the best of my ability.
partner mechanic information I felt whatever advice I would be given, truly matters most as to my limited knowledge of various care repairs or complete fixes, what history do I have at the station, or familiarity of the individual.
