Monthly Canadian CPI report
Canada’s CPI decreased 0.1% between November and December 2022, seasonally adjusted, and the unadjusted index rose 6.3% over the twelve months to December. The month-to-month drop in December was the only month in 2022 to record a decline. Excluding food and energy products the seasonally adjusted CPI rose 0.3% for the third consecutive month.
Goods prices were up 6.9% over the last 12 months, well down from 8.0% in the twelve months to November, while services prices rose 5.6%, a bit less than the 5.8% 12-month increase to November. Lower gasoline prices continued to be a major factor, rising just 3.0% compared to 13.7% in the 12 months to November.
Food prices still dominate in the inflation picture after rising 10.1% over the latest twelve months. Public transportation prices were up 9.2% and shelter prices 7.0%.
