Internalizing, Externalizing, and Other might be off in the data above. GPT-3 did the classification for that column because I didn’t want to and Baldwin et al. (2023) didn’t provide the classifications by estimate or study. Misclassifications by quasi-experimental design are also the fault of GPT-3 and Baldwin et al. not providing a marker for design by provided estimates in their supplement.

Rationale

Baldwin et al. meta-analyzed plausibly quasi-causal studies of the relationship between childhood maltreatment and mental health problems. They found a moderate effect (r = .15) and claimed they accounted for publication bias after finding evidence for it, but their corrections were poor. Their method of accounting for publication bias was to leave out estimates from cohorts/studies in turn and then recalculate the meta-analytic estimate (jackknifing), but this obviously shouldn’t do much given the very large number of effect sizes. A real correction, like trim-and-fill or PET-PEESE would correct for many studies at once if bias were severe. The used method was insufficient so, below, I have provided the trim-and-fill estimates for the data that was extracted from the supplementary materials by GPT-3.

Conclusions

Properly correcting for publication bias substantially reduced the aggregate and by-design meta-analytic effects, rendering some of the effects by design nonsignificant. Some of the estimates differed by design from the authors’ originally-provided baseline estimates by design, which I can only assume was due to an error by GPT-3 that I can’t find or the fact that a marker for “quasi-causal estimate” versus “not quasi-causal estimate” was not provided in the supplementary materials. The corrected meta-analytic d was 0.19, an r of 0.095, indicating that less than 1% of the variance in mental health is explained by childhood maltreatment. I avoided PET-PEESE because it indicated an effect of -.04, which seemed unrealistic. Perhaps it isn’t, but I don’t really know.
