AFL average scores have been increasing over time due to many causes. Although many factors influence a possible spike or decline in a given year, the overall trend is an increase. We have explored the overall yearly average scores and also whether the average yearly margins between winners and losers is correlated in any way to the scoring increases over time.
The first tab explores the average yearly scores from the beginning of the VFL competition in 1987 to the completion of the current year 2022. A regression line has been included to show the gradual increase and to compare against whether there is margin increases on average across the years. If you hover the mouse over the graph, you will see the year in question with the exact average score and whether there are any pertinent notes giving possible cause for any unusual results for a given year.
The second tab explores the average yearly margins across the same time frame. The regression line shows a comparable increase inline with the average score increase. The graph has the same hover capabilities to explore any pertinent information for any given year.
Both charts have a basic range slider to view specific periods in time more clearly.
