I am conducting an analysis on New York City Shooting Incidents. I received my data from https://opendata.cityofnewyork.us/. This data dates back to 2006, and was most recently updated in 2022, and continues to be updated. I grew up in a very small town in New Jersey that was only a 30 minute ferry from Manhattan, and took very frequent trips into ‘the city’. As I hope to live in NYC post-grad, I decided to conduct this analysis because I thought it was important to be aware of Gun Violence, as more Americans died from Gun Violence in 2020 than in any other year. I predict that minority groups are going to be most affected by gun violence in New York than non-minority groups. I also predict that Manhattan is going to have the most amount of gun incidents compared to the other NYC boroughs.

New York City consists of 5 boroughs; Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Queens. Below is an interactive chart which shows which boroughs have had the most number of shootings to this date.

We can see that in order from highest to lowest amount of shootings is the following: Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

I want to look at a map that shows the different Age Groups, and which Age Groups are most frequently perpetrator of gun incidents.

We can see that there is not one age group that overwhelming sticks out, but that most frequently perpetrators of gun violence are between the ages of 18-24, and 25-44.

Next, I will use the same map to see if one Gender tends to be the perpetator of gun violence over another.

Here, we can see that overwhelmingly Males tend to be the perpetrator of gun violence compared to Females.

Now that we know this, I think it would be interesting to look at the Victim’s sex, and if Males also tend to be the Victims of gun violence.

Through this, we can see that we see a lot more contrast between Males and Females as the victim compared to the perpetrator graph above.

Lastly, to test my hypothesis, I want to use this map and color code it by the Victim’s Race to see if certain Racial Groups tend to be the victim of gun violence compared to others.

We see here that each Racial Group from the data collected is represented. However, it is apparent that Black people are the most common victims of gun violence. We can also see that specifically in Brooklyn the Black population stick out to be the most common racial group that is a victim of gun violence.

This is important because as politicians are battling Gun Violence, especially in NYC, it is important to know the data and statistics. By having access to information and being knowledgeable on what different boroughs need to be focused on more, we can be more efficient on helping to end gun violence, one city at a time.
