Introduction This project is analyzing COVID death rates and comparing it to the political affiliation of New York counties. We wanted to see if there was a correlation between the amount of deaths in a county to whether the county is considered “Red” of “Blue.” The presidential data is based on the 2020 election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. My hypothesis would be that the more Republican counties have the most amount of COVID deaths.

COVID Deaths: This map displays the number of COVID related deaths in the different counties of New York. The darker the region on the map, the more deaths there were. It is easy to see that the most impacted areas were around New York City. This makes sense because it is the most highly populated area in the smallest amount of area surrounding it. The counties with the most deaths are: Kings, Queens, Nassau, Bronx, Richmond, Westchester, Suffolk, New York, and Onodaga. All of these counties aside from Onodaga are located on the southern most tip of New York State.

Population: This map is showing the vast contrast in population of the New York counties. The less populated places are darker, and as they get more populated the area gets lighter.

Political Affiliation: This map is representing the political affiliation of New York counties. “Red” is showing the Republican party and “Blue” is showing the Democratic party. It is obvious that the east side of New York is very Democratic and the more upstate portion of New York is vastly Republican. It seems as though more of New York is Republican however when looking at the population of each county, the most populated places are Democratic.

Analysis: After reviewing each maps data we can conclude that the most amount of deaths happened in the most populated counties, These most populated counties are also largely Democratic. My hypothesis was incorrect, I thought the places with the most amount of COVID deaths would be Republican, but it is quite the opposite. Due to population sizes it makes a lot of sense why there were more COVID deaths in more metropolitan areas, and these areas tend to be more Democratic.
