Part IV - Contextual write-up: why the data is important, why the insights are important. This is addressed throughout the project.
For the final project, I’ll use fivethirtyeight’s publicly available dataset college_all_ages to determine below:
1). Majors with highest employment potential 2). Majors with lowest employment potential 3). Majors with highest full-time employment potential and if they are the same as majors with highest overall employment potential 4). Ultimately, make recommendations as to which majors might be worthwhile pursuing
There are some additional datasets such as share of women in STEM fields and graduate programs with highest employment potential that I’ll also take a look at.
Part I - Finding your data set(s) and getting approval for your project on-time, recognition of strength/weaknesses of data, analysis to find insights in the data.
I used fivethirtyeight’s dataset college_all_ages to perform analysis below. I primarily relied on the recent-grads.csv and women-stem.csv files. I submitted my proposal on time, received approval to move forward. Based on the analysis performed below, it mostly concurs with the intuition that humanities majors generally produce graduates with higher unemployment rates while graduates in engineering and STEM fields have lower unemployment rates. However, there were exceptions for example nuclear engineering graduates had one of the highest unemployment rates and it could be because there aren’t many nuclear power plants in the country and hence this niche field doesn’t require as many graduates. Similarly, the other intuitive finding was that the share of women in STEM fields such as math and computer science was lower than women in health (nursing) fields. In terms of dataset weaknesses, the analysis below couldn’t explain why nuclear engineering had a high unemployment rate, which is in part due to the limited data available in the data set. It would have been helpful if the data set for example had a long-run unemployment rate average for the different majors which would have helped confirm some of these assumptions. I also had to calculate some fields such as full-time employment as a share of total employment (full-time employment potential) for each field to eliminate the possibility for example of certain humanities majors having a higher employment rate due in part to higher part-time employment. Finally, the data set is a snap-shot in time rather than a time series which is yet another weakness to discern trends. The strength of the data is it’s ability to glean high-level trends.
Part II - Data handling: cleaning, outlier/null handling, and transfer/loading data to the web.
Although I pulled the files directly from fivethirtyeight’s website, I did have to filter out 0’s in the employed column to calculate the full-tie empoyment potential. The files were relatively clean.
Part III - The graphs are outlined below where applicable.

To determine majors with highest and lowest employment potential, we take a look at majors with the highest and lowest unemployment rates.
Nuclear engineering, Public Administration and Computer Networking & Telecommunications are the three majors with the highest unemployment rates. At first glance, it’s not intuitive that Nuclear engineering would have a high unemployment rate but it could be because it’s a specialized field with limited employment potential. Computer networking & telecom appears to be hardware-related jobs than software which are highly desired. Similarly, jobs with the lowest unemployment potential are Maths & computer-related, Botany and Military Technologies.
Part III - Data presentation: compliance with best data visualization practices, clarity, information-to-ink ratio, how memorable the visualization is

We could also have used small multiples as a display for the majors, below is how we would do this. Although this doesn’t help us decipher clearly, we see how below in the case of women’s share of STEM majors displayed as small multiples, we can clearly see that the share of women in STEM majors such as computers and engineering is low versus high in Health (i.e. fields such as nursing)

To identify majors with the highest full-time employment potential, we divide the Full-time_year_round column by the Employed column.
Majors with the highest full time year around employment as a percent of total employment are Oceanography, Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering whereas majors with the lowest share of full-time employment are Miscellaneous fine arts, Anthropology & Archaeology and Music. Essentially engineering graduates are likely to be fully employed whereas Liberal arts graduates are less employed which concurs with intuition. It’s also interesting to note that the majors with the highest share of full-time employment are not necessarily the fields with the lowest unemployment rates which were earlier identified to be Maths & computer-related, Botany and Military Technologies majors, this could mean that although graduates with these majors have the lowest overall unemployment rates, perhaps there are an inordinate number of part-time employees with these majors accounting for the low unemployment rate.
Based on this analysis, it’s recommended that graduates pursue Oceanography, Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and it’s recommended graduates do not pursue Miscellaneous fine arts, Anthropology & Archaeology and Music fields.

For the second part of the problem, we analyze the share of women in Stem fields in descending and ascending order.
It’s interesting to note that nursing is one of the three STEM fields with the highest share of women, the other two fields confirm that it’s low-paying STEM majors that attract the highest share of women. For example, Communications Disorders Sciences & Services has the highest share of women in STEM fields enrolled but is also one of the lowest paying majors.
Stem_Women <- read.csv(url("https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fivethirtyeight/data/master/college-majors/women-stem.csv"))
# Identify the top three majors with the highest share of women in STEM fields
Stem_Women1 <- Stem_Women[order(-Stem_Women$ShareWomen),]
# Identify the top three majors with the lowest share of women in STEM fields
Stem_Women2 <- Stem_Women[order(Stem_Women$ShareWomen),]
# Bar plot with Color for the Top 3 Majors with the highest share of women in STEM fields

We could also have used small multiples as a display for the majors, below is how we would do this. We see how below in the case of women’s share of STEM majors displayed as small multiples, we can clearly see that the share of women in STEM majors such as computers and engineering is low versus high in Health (i.e. fields such as nursing)
