WHY producing FAIR data?

  1. Ethical aspects
  2. Efficiency aspects
  3. Evolution of Research Evaluation

New DFG CV template: up to 10 non-journal publications

This might include non-peer-reviewed articles on preprint servers and contributions to conferences or anthology volumes, data sets, protocols of clinical trials, software packages, patents applied for and granted, blog contributions, infrastructures or transfer. You may also indicate other forms of academic output here, such as contributions to the (technical) infrastructure of an academic community (including in an international context) and contributions to science communication. This second category is also restricted to a maximum of ten items.

DORA endorsed by the EU

The scientific content of a paper is much more important than publication metrics.

Consider the value and impact of all research outputs (including datasets and software).

Research evaluation is slowly evolving.

  • SFBs are in first line
  • There are reasons funding agencies are doing that

Personal advantage

It is more fun

Learning new tools

Open source communities (brainhack)

More collaboration and collaborators

Facilitate collaboration

The obvious advantage for everyone is they got something that none of us could have developed alone.

Interview: White rabbit, by the Open make team, Javier Serrano and Amanda Diez Frenandez.

Facilitate collaboration

  • different skillset
  • different time zone
  • different objectives

Data science + Standardization

The How: 2022-23

  1. People of contact: one on one meeting
  2. Workshop in January
  3. Help-desk
  • Start early
  • Create information hub
  • link with project management
  • Basics: version control, data backup, sharing, archive and publication. Legal aspects
  • advanced: data format, workflows and automation

One one One meeting

  • person of contact
  • minimum: 30 min/3weeks
  • goals:
    • Spot issues

    • Provide professional support

    • Link members with similar issues

    • Define use case for RDM communities work

Workshop

  • 16-17 January 2023, hybrid or online.

  • Target: contact people + volunteers

  • Content: RDM basics, tools on-boarding.

  • Output: one data management plan per project.

TOOLS: GIN

GIN for the SFB1315

https://gindata.hu-berlin.de

  • non-sensitive collected data
  • project management data, material and methods, code, manuscripts,…
  • Main readme can be used as main URL linking to other elements and files.

TOOLS: VRE

  • sensitive data (GDPR compliant)
  • large computing power attached

-> Data do not leave the server -> jupyterhub to run code on the data -> guacamole to use a linux virtual machine with access to the data

Technical restriction

  • VRE on charite network, relatively large administration burden to get an account (needs to be verified by the charite IT)
  • GIN on the HU: no way to access from the Charité network.

Charité IT and HU CMS in discussion (since June 2022). Workaround can be used, if not too much data.

Communication

  • One main URL for project entry
  • Main URL accessible without login
  • Different users need different information
  • Researcher keeps full control.
  • The SFB is also a project: needs for a unique URL listing all project

Smartfigure Gallery as project entry point

  • One figure
  • links
  • Description
  • keywords

See https://sdash.sourcedata.io/?q=sfb1315-project

Smartfigure as internal communication

  • Keyword for your project
  • Share a figure, add description
  • Share with your group, SFB group, the world

-> Get early feedback, thrive collaboration.

Smartfigure and tools

Smartfigure as external communication and outreach

Public figures may be chosen as SFB highlights.

Can be used for the SFB, or for your lab.

Early decisions are important.

What you can do as a PI ?

  • Be supportive
  • Give feedback
  • Ask for help

Sharing is caring.
