To answer this question I used a data set of tweets that I found on Kaggle. There were a little over 10,000 tweets per airline and I filtered it down to only United and Delta. The reason for this is because I usually fly Delta and have had great experiences but sometimes United is cheaper for the flight routes that I usually take and want to see the difference in sentiment between the airlines.
I used the bing sentiment data and joined it with my data set of words from the tweets. I created a a bar graph then grouped by airline and sentiment and finally filtered for only words that are negative. The bar graph shows that tweets are far more negative about United than they are for delta. The results of this graph make sense to me because Delta consistently ranks high in customer satisfaction rankings and United usually ranks lower.
I wanted to look into this question because many people have a fear of flying and when choosing an airline to fly with fear can be a very big factor. People that have a fear of flying would want to choose an airline that they will feel safe. To answer this question I used the nrc sentiment data and joined it with my original data. I created a bar graph and filtered for where the sentiment of a word is fear. This bar graph shows that people use fearful words more often when tweeting about United. I would factor this into choosing an airline to fly with because I would want to choose the airline that would cause me the least amount of worry and the one that I won’t be afraid to fly with.
The rationale for this problem is that I wanted to see how much the negative sentiment fluctuated over the first couple hundred words in the data set. To do this I created a bar graph that counted the amount of negative words, then group by the sentiment, airline, and when the tweet was created. This graph shows us that the negative word usage is pretty small per tweet in the first couple tweets but as we go further along it increases. It increases for both airlines right in the middle. One can assume that at this time maybe there were problems with both airlines that caused people to tweet at them and talk about the negative experiences they had with both Delta and United.
