Objective What Americans know — or think they know — about inflation objective : Inflation currently tops the list of issues Americans say are most important to them, and polls show it will be on voters’ minds as Election Day approaches next week. But how well do Americans understand the causes of inflation and what they believe can be done to combat it? According to a recent YouGov poll, the most Americans blame potential causes on the price of foreign oil, government spending, and profit-maximizing corporations. The top three inflation-fighting solutions are increasing domestic oil production, investing in the supply chain, and fining companies for price gouging. Overall, the findings indicate that gas prices are many Americans’ most pressing concern when it comes to rising costs.

The visualization chosen had the following three main issues:

  • Briefly explain issue 1 Rising costs: Over the last 20 years, the cost of 16 goods and services has increased, decreased, or remained constant. We then compared their responses to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing how much prices in each area have changed since 2000. According to the BLS, prices have decreased in at least five of the categories investigated: televisions, toys, cellphone services, computer software, and airfare. However, the majority of Americans believe that the cost of each of the five categories has risen “somewhat” or “a lot.”

  • Briefly explain issue 2 Feeling the impact: The effects of inflation are felt by the majority of Americans. The majority of Americans (55%) say they have felt the impact of high inflation in their own lives “a lot,” and the proportions are roughly the same for men and women, as well as white, Black, and Hispanic Americans. Among the larger differences in how many people say they’ve felt a lot of impact are: 67% of Republicans vs. 38% of Democrats, 63% with an annual family income of $50,000 or less vs. 46% with an annual family income of $100,000 or more, and 61% in rural areas vs. 46% in cities

  • Briefly explain issue 3 Understanding inflation’s causes and solutions: Americans are more confident in their understanding of the causes of inflation than they are in their understanding of the solutions. While 72% believe they understand what causes inflation at least somewhat well, only 24% believe they understand it “very well.” Fewer people (55%) say they understand the solutions to inflation than the causes, and only 17% say they have a very good understanding of the solutions. Almost half of all Americans (45%) say they do not understand the solutions to inflation well or at all. Republicans are more certain than Democrats that they understand what causes inflation and how to combat it.
