Location, biophysical and agronomic parameters for croplands in Northern Ghana
Abstract
Smallholder agriculture is the bedrock of the food production system in sub-Saharan Africa. Yields in Africa are significantly below potentially attainable yields for a number of reasons, and they are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Monitoring of these highly heterogeneous landscapes is needed to respond to farmer needs, develop appropriate policy and ensure food security, and Earth Observation (EO) must be part of these efforts. There is a lack of ground data for developing and testing EO methods in West Africa, and in this paper, we present data on (i) crop locations, (ii) biophysical parameters5 and (iii) crop yield and biomass was collected in 2020 and 2021 in Ghana and is reported in this paper. In 2020, crop type was surveyed in more than 1800 fields in three different agro-ecological zones across Ghana (Guinea Savannah, Transition and Deciduous zones).

Validation of SMOS Satellite Soil Moisture Estimates using capacitance probes over the different ecological zones in Northern Ghana
Accepted for publication.
IntecOpen Journal
2022
Abstract
This research assesses the validation of satellite soil moisture estimates from the European Space Agency’s SMOS satellite using data from capacitance SM probes. The in-situ measurements were carried out at various sites across the Jirapa and Yendi communities. They are located in two different sub-ecological zones of the Savanna in the North of Ghana. They are located in the Western Sudan savannah and Open Guinea Savannah sub-ecological zones of the Savannah in the North of Ghana. The correlation between SMOS SM estimates and the in-situ measurements was observed to improve with depth. In addition, the 10cm depths capacitance probe SM measurements were observed to agree relatively better with the SMOS SM estimates. The dry season RMSE for the two sites ranging between 0.045 to 0.058 m3/m3 was the closest to the SMOS expected accuracy. However, the RMSE and MBE were observed to deteriorate with depth. In addition, Jirapa recorded relatively poor RMSE. SMOS SM estimates at Yendi and Jirapa performed relatively well during the dry season compared to the rainy season, especially at the 10cm depths.
Drought Characteristics Over Ghana and its Ocean-Atmosphere Teleconnections.

Abstract
The devastating effects of drought on agriculture, water resources, and other socioeconomic activities have severe consequences on food security and water resource management. Understanding the characteristics of drought and the ocean-atmospheric mechanisms that drive drought over Ghana is significant for developing an early warning system for disaster risk management. This study first investigated the temporal variability of drought and its connection with ocean-atmosphere teleconnections. The Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI) 3,6,12 and 24 was computed for 30yrs from the 1981–2010. The historical trend of drought characteristics (i.e duration, interarrival time, frequency, and severity) over the twenty-two (22) synoptic stations in Ghana were studied. The results show high interannual to decadal variability of drought with a decline in drought in late 2005. A longer duration of drought typically occurs over coastal Ghana. The severity and intensity of drought are higher in Ghana’s coastal and northern belts. However, Coastal Ghana has a higher interarrival time for agriculture and hydrological drought. For predictability, the Tropical Atlantic Ocean and Equatorial Pacific Ocean indices had varying degrees of influence on drought over Ghana.
Trend Analysis of Historical and Future Climate of Accra

Description
This research aims to describe the climate of Accra from 1960 to 2021 using rainfall and temperature; the dominant variables of the African climate. This retrospective study aims to assist in mapping the trajectory of the climate of Accra into future for planning and mitigation purposes especially when climate change threatens irreversible consequences. It involves ascertaining rainfall totals, mean temperature, the seasonal cycle, number of days with rain events >= 20mm, annual rainfall and temperature anomalies, days with rainfall and temperature in the 10th and 90th percentiles and projections under the RCP25, RCP45 and RCP85 scenarios from 2022 to 2100 for annual rainfall and temperature
