Do I want to start a business one day?
In short, it depends. Starting a business is not a small
undertaking. Even the smallest businesses can have a plethora of moving
parts, requiring substantial commitments from those at the wheel. With
the things that could, should and will go wrong lurking in the shadow of
every decision made comes the thrill, excitement and rush in getting it
right. For me to want to start a business, it will take the right idea
supported by the right people.
In truth the question should be: will I start a business one
day? The reality is, yes, I likely will. Whether it is a web app,
consultancy or the right idea, starting a business is as simple as
filing with your Secretary of State and getting a TID from the IRS.
Starting a business is not only relatively simple, doing so also has
practical applications. Having a business opens the door to other
businesses, ones that only operate business to business. It can also be
a way to limit your personal liability, depending on the type of
business you file.
However, the spirit of the question is not about the practical.
The spirit of the question is asking whether you want to dedicate
yourself to chasing the million-dollar idea, turning it into a
million-dollar business plan and executing that plan with the odds
stacked against you. To the spirit of the question, the answer is not
really. While enticing in the sky’s the limit sort of way, it simply
does not offer the financial stability I have grown accustomed to in
this stage of my career. Not to say I wouldn’t a part of a startup on
the ground floor, but I would say it would be unlikely that I am the one
leading the charge.
