The hatecrimes dataset offers crucial information to help understand which groups are targeted more frequently and where. The positive aspect of the dataset is that it offers information on a variety of protected groups ranging from race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, etc. Including a broad range of subgroups allows the audience to recognize and sympathize with the victims. However, the negative side of this aspect is that it also minimizes the the sufferance of those whose reported numbers are not as high. Additionally, having an abundance of groups in the dataset hinders the speed of finding which groups have higher reported numbers. This is even more damaging considering the lack of or inaccurate reporting of hate crimes.
Hypothetically, I would like to explore the population in each county by race. It would be beneficial to understand whether or not protected groups are disproportionately affected by hate crimes based on the population. Doing so would answer the question whether groups suffer more severe acts of aggression because their particular groups is frequently targeted or because their group populates the county at a higher rate. A better understanding would come from acknowledging each subgroup sufferance in relation to their neighbors. I would also like to explore the median income by county. This information would help determine whether or not lower-income counties experience higher rates of hate crimes. I hypothesize that this is, in fact, the case. However, I am interested to learn which groups are targeted more in lower vs. higher income counties.
After seeing the output from the tutorial, the first thing I would do to follow up would be to contact my local state government and ask about their policies on reporting hate crimes to the FBI. I would also ask about the training officers receive to correctly identity hate crimes while on-the-scene. Depending on the responses received, I would petition for the state to enact more efficient hate crime reporting policies. The second step I’d take would be to further research why Jewish people experienced more discrimination than other protected groups. Considering that the data is a bit outdated, I’d also be interested to know if Jewish people are still being targeted more in more recent years. This information could be used to raise awareness in the counties with higher numbers and could encourage residents to be more proactive in reducing these numbers by recognizing, reporting, and/or intervening when hate crimes are happening.
