Hello! I am excited to be in Data Wrangling! My experience with R started just six months ago, and I am excited to continue my learning journey with this course. I have been balancing work and the Data Analytics Certificate program since the start of Winter Semester 2022. I am about half-way through the program.

In addition to work and academics, I am the father to two boys (Joseph - 3yr and Ike - 16mo) as well as husband to my wife Lindsay. We live in Madeira, and we are just starting to get into organized activities with our kids as I begin as a volunteer soccer coach this Autumn.

Academic Background

Ohio State University - B.S. Materials Science and Engineering - 2009

Ohio State University - M.S. Materials Science and Engineering - 2012

University of Cincinnati - Data Analytics Certificate - (Enrolled Jan 2022)

Professional Background

GE Aviation Manufacturing and Materials Engineering roles - 2009 to 2016

GE Additive Materials and Supply Chain Engineering Roles - 2017 to present

In my GE Aviation roles I implemented new materials systems, specifically polymeric composites, for jet engine applications. Many of these were complex technologies that when implemented saved weight and improved mechnical or aerodynamic efficiency.

In my GE Additive roles I have had broad responsibilities, including materials engineering, integration of engineering functions from a merged company into a parent company, electro-mechanical design and product introduction, and management of enterprise systems.

Experience With R

I have used R professionally since learning the basics in a course during the Spring semester. I mostly use R for data wrangling purposes between our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM - Windchill) and Enterprise Resource Management (ERP - Oracle). I frequently use the ‘sqldf() package’ to manage info between these databases. I am also starting to use API functions to call specific data from the servers such that my reports are easier to manage.

During a BANA course last spring semester I used R to wrangle and analyze data from the Helium crypto-currency blockchain server to determine the business case for Helium miners. This analysis predicted that returns for miners would fall in the coming months due to a progression of lower margins for miners and a lack of use-case development that would alter this business paradigm. This analysis has aligned with the market returns experienced by miners in the months since (March 2022-August 2022).

Experience With Other Analytical Software

My go-to analytical software has been Excel in my professional setting. Many of our corporate systems are built to interface through excel programs, so it is the natural program to select at my company. I am doing more with VBA for process automation, including using Selenium extensively for interfacing with web-based business systems that do not allow for access to back-end databases.
