Dave Portnoy’s Pizza Rankings

Although he has eaten copious amounts of pizza in a copious number of states, let’s have a look at the states where Dave Portnoy has tried more than fifty establishments.

As you can see, while New York is known for it’s pizza, it has a fair number of stinkers. And somewhat surprisingly, New Jersey has a better average score. Although all of the five states with the most pizza sampled has an average score of seven, which by Dave’s own measure is a solid pizza, and which he could eat all day.

Dave has rated pizza all over the country. Except for the Northwest. And the Midwest. And the vast majority has been in the NorthEast, mainly New York.

Ratings of 8 or higher means you will have some truly stupendous pizza. If we take Dave’s sampling as statistically represenative of the amount of stellar pizza in the top five states - which, of course, we can’t, but hey, why not? - then even though it has a lower average score than the other states, it clearly has most of the best pizza in the NorthEast/U.S. Looking at the graph, NY is clearly trying to send a message. No?

The best pizza places in the world!

Or at the least the Northeast…where Dave Portnoy has eaten most of his pizza.

Scores of 9 or higher is pizza worth travelling a long distance for. If you’re up for the trip, here’s where to go.
