Introduction

Allison and I discussed the gap between actual jobs and the HR concentration courses. This is in line with the GAP analysis for the BSBA program. The results are preliminary and should not be cited without my consent.

I began by scraping jobs on indeed.com with the following five keywords: human resources, talent acquisition, recruitment specialist, management consultant, and talent management relations. There are two steps to scraping. The first step is to gather all job listings linked to the five keywords. I scraped 10201 job listings. The second step involves scraping the job descriptions for each link. Then, I create several additional variables for each job description:

Additionally, I also gather data on location of the jobs. Next, I filter jobs with missing data which leads to 9277 jobs. Last, I filter for only fulltime jobs which led to an analysis of 6421 jobs. Out of those, 1541 were remote jobs or approximately 24 percent of jobs are remote.

With the jobs, I can answer three broad questions:

Question 1: What is the major difference between remote and non-remote jobs?

To answer this question, I analyze the job titles for both remote and non-remote jobs. Figure 1: This figure shows the proportion of the ten most frequently used stemmed words in the job title.

Figure 1 shows the mot commonly occuring words in the job titles for both remote and non-remote jobs. Overall, the word recruit is the most common. But, words like health and manag occur more frequently in remote jobs.

Question 2: What knowledge is required for remote and non-remote jobs?

Table 1: This table shows the differences in knowledge or keywords between remote and non-remote jobs
RemoteFlag MicrosoftKnowledge WorkdayKnowledge SAPKnowledge SalesForceKnowledge TrainingKnowledge NegotiationKnowledge StaffingKnowledge RecruitmentKnowledge
FALSE 0.35 0.01 0.12 0.01 0.40 0.13 0.37 0.72
TRUE 0.09 NA 0.01 0.01 0.12 0.03 0.12 0.21

The results of Table 1 are quite striking. There is a considerable difference between remote and non-remote jobs. For example, non-remote jobs require recruitment, staffing and training knowledge along with familiarity with excel (Microsoft knowledge). Allison and I were both surprised by the lack of popularity of workday, SAP or salesforce. This makes me think that I did not code the dummy variables correctly. Last, 100 percent of the jobs required good communication skills.

Overall, since remote jobs are different, in the next question, I only analyze non-remote jobs.

Question 3a: For non-remote jobs, what words are occur most frequently with the word ability in the job description?

This figure shows the most associated words with the ability. That is, these words are very likely to occur at the same time as ability in a job description. Some associated words are powerpoint, regulations, excel, written, empathetic, background, and security.

Question 3b: For non-remote jobs, what words are occur most frequently with the word requirements in the job description?

Question 3c: For non-remote jobs, what words are occur most frequently with the word responsibility in the job description?
