Maps

The maps below back up your assumption that capacity and employment are linked, at least in urban areas. The highway system linking these centers shows corridors of high capacity with very little employment. I’ve mapped the cells containing employers with more than 100 employees, but it is difficult to see as there are only around 1000 cells

I’ve also plotted the points below to show the correlation, to aid the visual I have removed all cells with 0 employment and capacity as most were in the gulf and removed one extreme outlier of 30,000 employees.

Because employment is extremely skewed, see the histogram below, I have also provided a log10 transformed plot which shows the correlation slightly better. The striations in the data represent some of the low values but are just product of the transformation.

Finally I have faceted out the graph by cluster type. While it shows difference between the clusters, roughly corresponding to their geographic reach, I don’t see any difference in the capacity employee relationship.

Employers with 100 employees

Looking at just employeers wit more than 100 employees the patter is more clear, though maybe not as strong as expected.

The pattern appears to be consistent across all clusters.

Tables

62% of Employment are with in grids cells with over 20k capacity. These grid cells represent the top 2% of all cells with a capacity greater than 0.

However this pattern is not the same across clusters, unsurprisingly most agriculture jobs are in low capacity grid cells, however so are education, printing, and water transportation.
