I am an undergraduate student at Oregon State university and will be graduating spring of 2022. My major is Biological Data Sciences, and after graduating I will be pursuing a Masters degree in Biostatistics. Over the last couple of years I have really gotten to participate in some great experiences in data science and Big data. The summer of 2021 I completed the USDA-NIFA-REEU Big data internship which was my first major step in getting experience in the world of data science. Since then I have continued working in Dr.Jeff Changโs lab at Oregon State University. While data science is very broad in fields of work, my focus has been processing and sequencing whole genome sequences using command line operations, programming in Python and R. I have opportunities to showcase my work at symposiums as well which was a great experience to share my work with others. Some of the courses I have taken that have significantly improved my data science skills include the biological data science course at OSU. Which has provided experiences of learning professional skill in data science writing, visually representing data, and conceptually understanding research papers that are describing big data studies. And lastly my capstone class has given me the opportunity to work with graduate students and create hypotheses and determine as a group how to go about visualizing the data in a way that is meaningful. And for my final experience was for this class; a case study course which has allowed me to work with my peers in developing a dashboard to display data and learn of ways data scientists can create different experiences for users to see and interact with their work. I believe all of these experiences have created a way for me to apply my knowledge and skills to a variety of data science jobs and or opprotuities.
