Brief

This report makes use of the American CDC data set “Conditions Contributing to COVID-19 Deaths, by State and Age, Provisional 2020-2022, updated on 11 May 2022.

In contrast to previous CDC releases, this data set defines the Age Groups (and hence aggregates the data) as follows:

  1. 0-24 years
  2. 25-35 years
  3. 35-44 years
  4. 45-54 years
  5. 55-64 years
  6. 65-74 years
  7. 75-84 years
  8. 85+ years

Effectively, Pediatric Medicine no longer exists. The Age Group 0-24 seems in direct violation of the Age Group ranges endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Because of how the CDC stratified the results, it is difficult to arrive the Covid mortality risks faced by American children. The following graphs work with the data we have – not the data one might wish – to explore the Covid mortality risks faced by American children.

Deaths by Age Group

The graphs below take the total number of Covid Deaths as 100%, and then assigns the number of deaths per Age Group the relevant percentage value. The sum total of the heights represented by the bars will round up to 100%.

2020 Covid Deaths (%) by Age Group

2021 Covid Deaths (%) by Age Group

Age Group Populations

Below, based on the USA Census data for 2019, the population percentage baseline for each CDC Age Group.

Death % by Population %

We divide the Percentage of Covid Deaths for each Age Group over the Population Percentage for each same Age Group. So total Covid Deaths equals 100%, and total Population equals 100%.

If the Covid Mortality risk was NOT affected by Age, then each Age Group would have a percentage of deaths proportion to its population size. So an Age Group that was 20% of the population should have 20% of the Covid Deaths.

2020 Covid Deaths (%) by Age Group Population (%)

We see instead that the risk of Covid mortality follows roughly a logarithmic scale gradient based on age.

2021 Covid Deaths (%) by Age Group Population (%)
