Introduction

For my sentiment analysis, I am curious about looking at the sentiment within songs from two of my favorite artists, Chelsea Cutler & The Band Camino. I am choosing to look at this artist and this band because they are in a similar genre of music but they music is still very different so I thought it would be interesting to compare.

Below are the 3 questions I am going to answer in this document.

Question 1, Comparing the amount of times the word “Love” & “Hate” is used by Chelsea Cutler & The Band Camino

What data I plan to collect and why i think it would help answer my question

I plan to use the Spotify API that I learned how to use in order to collect this data. I plan to use my own spotify account to gather this data on both Chelsea Cutler and The Band Camino. Using the Spotify API would be extremely beneficial and one of the easiest ways for me to pull the data. Along with that, using the spotify API would allow me to analyze multiple songs within both artists spotify library. ADD MORE IN MARKDOWN

Question 1, What are all the words Chelsea Cutler & The Band Camino use in their songs - Word Cloud

The two word clouds above depict a variety of popular words that Chelsea Cutler and the band CAMINO use throughout the five songs I chose to look at for each artist. The bigger and bolder the word, the more Chelsea Cutler and The Band CAMINO use within each of their 5 songs. The graphs below help display a count of some of their most popular words and exactly how many times they use them.

Question 2, Count of Most used words and how many times they are used within Chelsea Cutler’s five songs and The Band CAMINO’s five songs

These two graphs above are interesting to look at because these words are the most used words within each of their five songs I scraped from the internet. On the y - axis of the graph you can see the count of the words. The band CAMINO’s words have a few stand out words (Learned, Shoulda, Time) compared to Chelsea Cutler’s which consists of “Ooh” and “heaven”. These however are not as surprising as “heaven” is a word within one of her song titles so this word is expected to be repeated more than others. This is only a snapshot into some of both Chelsea Cutler and The band CAMINO’s lyrics since I am only looking at 5 songs each.

Question 3, Chronological question - how to does sentiment within Chelsea Cutler and The band CAMINO change over time

This graph depicts how Chelsea Cutler and The Band CAMINO’s sentiment in their song lyrics change as the song continues. Once the graph is expanded, it is easier to see how different each graph is. On the left, Chelsea Cutler’s sentiment is not very volatile until the middle section where it has extremely negative words and then extremely positive words. As for The Band CAMINO’s sentiment is overall generally more negative than it is positive, however the severity of the negative words is not has low. Most of The Band CAMINO’s negative words are around a score of -3 to -5.
