Florida has 307 inmates on death row, according to current Florida Department of Corrections data. Following California, it’s the state with the second most in the country, despite having the third largest population. This project explores the demographics of death row inmates.

Men are more likely to commit violent crimes, according to criminologists. Most research attributes this to social factors and different expectations of men versus women.

The three women on death row in Florida are at the Lowell Correctional Institution, which has been in the news often for mistreating inmates.

Offenses

Most inmates sentenced to life in prison in Florida were for first degree murder, followed by armed robbery.

County

As the largest county in the state by popualation Miami-Dade has the most inmates sentenced to life in prison. Duval County ranks seventh in population, but second in this analysis.
