-To be included in the scoring your ride must be on Strava and I need to know about your ride. If I (opp) am currently following you and your ride is visible to either followers or to everyone then you are fine or if your ride is visible to everyone and we share membership in a club- Gursky Mannschaft, Team of Destiny (closed), Central Michigan Mountain Bike Association (open), r/MichiganCycling (open),then you are fine too. If you have no idea what any of this means, please contact me and we will figure out a way to help you participate.
Week One: Previous Best (you vs your past self)
Week Two: Weight Adjusted (you vs gravity)
Week Three: Age Adjusted (you vs the ravages of time)
Week Four: Time Trial with Segment Bonuses (you vs two directions of Spandex)
Week Five: $ Adjusted (you vs carbon fiber)
Week Six: Segmageddonathonocalypse (you vs turning it up to 11)
Overall: Each week, the winner will receive a score that is equal to the number of participants (n) for that week. Second place will receive n-1, third will receive n-2…, … and, last place for the week will receive 1 point. The overall standings will be based on the sum of riders’ weekly scores. For ties in the overall standings, the first tie breaker goes to the rider with the most weeks of participation, the second tie breaker goes to the rider with the lowest single week place, and a final tie breaker will go to the rider who has the fastest time on the most recent segment.
PAQs
Can I do this virtually?
Short answer, no. The Coviduro [Again] is currently limited because it is based around specific geographic locations. Many of the methods used here could be adapted in the future to other locations or to eliminate the use of a specific geographic location- if anyone is interested in collaborating on a project like this, please let us know.
What’s with the weekly scoring thing?
We all pretty much already know who the fastest riders in our respective groups are, right? Also, we already have these things called races… Also, being fast is its own reward… For The Coviduro, we wanted to do something different that would help our diverse group of small-town riders challenge themselves by remaining more competitive with each other. As the chair of the Coviduro Scoring Subcommittee, my explicit goal is to develop a scoring system where we have a different rider win during each of the 6 weeks. While, I would describe the varied weekly scoring system as allowing each week to benefit a different rider (or group of riders), I acknowledge that many participants focus instead on the weeks in which they are not benefited.
What’s with the 4th place thing?
During the first coviduro, there was a rider who remained in 4th place overall for several weeks despite trying heroically to improve their outcome. Eventually (on May 3, 2020 to be unnecessarily precise), this rider, very vocally, began proclaiming that 4th place was actually superior to all other placings and then, on the final week the rider who was in 5th place overall had an amazing ride to win the day and move into 4th overall by 1 point.

Following this, all Bike League podiums recognize (at least conceptually) 4th as the actual winner of any cycling event (while still acknowledging that 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are pretty good too).
Week One
Course
The Week One course is 27.7 miles (from The Hill) with 3 challenge segments. The Week One course may be completed at any time between (and including) Thursday, April 21st, 2022 and Tuesday April 26th, 2022.
-Event and course: Strava or Garmin
-Segment 1: Howlin Bird Dawg (0.90 mi +79/-28’)
-Segment 2: TWSS (0.55 mi +40/-9’)
-Segment 3: Final Push To Bike League Hill (0.85 mi +26/-18’)

Scoring
The scoring method that we will be using for Week One uses your time this week vs your previous best time on each of the 3 challenge segments; so, the way that the math works is we take your previous best for a segment and divide it by the time that you rode today and that is your segment score. If you rode faster today than you have in the past, your segment score is greater than 1 and if you didn’t then your score is less than one. We add up your 3 segment scores and the highest sum wins the day. The reason that we do it this way (as opposed to using subtraction) is because it facilitates comparison between segments regardless of segment length. One problem with this scoring method is for riders that have not ridden one of the segments in the past; so, if you have not completed a segment before this week, your segment score is = 1 but, you still have to it ride hard (hard effort), and we will just have to use the honor system on this one. You must include your previous best times for each of the three segments in your ride description on Strava. Any rider who does not clearly indicate their previous best times in their ride description will have the segment KOM used as their previous best.
Results
Between rain, wind, and The Rust Shaker, it was difficult (impossible?) to find a good day for Week One of Coviduro [Again]; nevertheless, we had 15 riders compete (including 2 Coviduro newcomers) and 11 new personal records (and a tie) on the challenge segments. All datas from Coviduro [Again] can be found here. The graphs below show how riders performed on the three challenge segments. Rider time for Week One is shown in white, their previous best for the segment is shown in yellow and the ranking is based on the quotient (segment score).
For Week One, Coviduro newcomer, KD overcame the late day fading light and some navigational hiccups to set personal records on all three challenge segments and earn the top segment score on 2 of the 3 challenge segments but NS, riding on the day after riding to Greenville and back, also rode 3 PRs and posted the second best segment score for all three to win the day! Coviduro newcomer, UB used 2 PRs to finish 3rd and Coviduro veteran, RM had the best performance of any rider without any new Week One PRs in 4th.

Week Two
Course
The Week Two course is sightly longer (29.8 miles from The Hill) but has twice as much elevation gain as Week One. The 3 challenge segments include one climb and two descents. The Week Two course may be completed at any time between (and including) Thursday, April 28th, 2022 and Tuesday May 3rd, 2022.

Scoring
With challenge segments that include one climb and two descents, the scoring method used for Week Two will attempt to remove the weight penalty for the uphill segment. Rider times for the climbing segment will be adjusted for sex (more on that later) and recalculated as though everyone has the weight of the lightest rider and the rankings for the week will be based on the riders’ adjusted cumulative time required to ride all three segments. The weight adjustment uses the calculator here to estimate each rider’s average power output (watts) based on their velocity, the slope of the hill, and total rider weight. The velocity is then recalculated for everyone based on same slope using the weight of the lightest rider competing that week. To participate in scoring, you need to indicate your total ride weight during the ride. Your total ride weight is your body, your clothes, your bike, your Wahoo, etc.. Just hop on a scale while holding your bike after your ride and indicate the weight in pounds (yes, I know pounds is a unit of force) and put the weight in your ride description. Any rider that does not indicate their weight in their ride description will be assigned the weight of the lightest rider for Week Two.
Results
Despite another round of unseasonably cool and moist weather, Week Two of Coviduro [Again] saw a record 18 riders compete, tight competition, and only one (minor) Drew-related injury. Coviduro riders out on Friday and Saturday used a rare east to west wind to demolish Gurskys Erection (the name of the first challenge segment) riding 4 new top-10 performances including a new KOM by KD. RB, however, averaged an estimated 558 watts to turn in the top performance for the segment after the results were normalized to the total ride weight of the lightest rider competing this week. The downhill (and west to east) challenge segments were dominated by Monday evening riders with BD riding a borrowed bike to new QOMs on both descents. BD’s 1:23 on Dirty Dump is equivalent to a 1:13 using a F –> M time conversion factor of 0.872 (based on an analysis of BRX results) which was the segment’s top performance of the week and GC had the fastest descent on The Dipsh!t Bomb. raw data
The competition for the Week Two overall win was extremely close with the cumulative times for the top-3 riders all within 2 seconds of one another. KD rode a new KOM and both of the weekend’s fastest descents to finish 3rd for the week, GC combined the fastest overall descent on the Dipsh!t Bomb with 2 more top-4 performances for 2nd, but it was BW’s solid climb followed by 2 “elite Clydesdale coming through” worthy descents that gave him the overall win by 1 second. RB was 4th place overall for the second week in a row.

Coviduro [Again] Overall Score After Week Two |

Week Three
Course
For Week Three, we have a 36-mile course that crosses the Pine River twice, enters briefly into Montcalm County, and even passes a location where there used to be half of a boat. The challenge segments include a steep climb with either deep ruts or loose gravel (or both), a horse-drawn buggy superhighway, and a low-visibility hill where you probably won’t crash and get a concussion. The Week Three course may be completed at any time between (and including) Thursday, May 5th, 2022 and Tuesday May 10th, 2022.
-Event and course: Strava or Garmin
-Segment 1: TELEDILDONIC (0.50 mi +48/-1’)
-Segment 2: The Wallow (0.48 mi +2/-20’)
-Segment 3: I Think I Hit My Head (0.80 mi +74/-53’)
Interactive map for Week Three- click on the segments for information.
Scoring
Rider times for the Week Three challenge segments will be adjusted for rider age and sex based on a method that I will explain (and fully document) later. To participate in scoring, riders must indicate their age (in Earth years) at the time of their ride in their ride description. Any rider that does not indicate their age will be assigned the age of the youngest rider. Riders will then receive a segment score based on the quotient of their adjusted performance and the adjusted performance of the fastest rider for that segment during Week Three (fastest time/your time) and the largest sum of the three segments scores wins the day. Riders must also submit a G-rated selfie or portrait image with at least one piece of discarded furniture along the course. Images can be included with your Strava activity, posted to the Bike League GroupMe (private) group, or both. Any rider that fails to submit an appropriate image will have 10 seconds added to their time on each of their challenge segments. As of May 9th, 2022, this course had (at least) 9 discarded furniture image opportunities.
Results
Week Three tied the record for the greatest number of Coviduro participants in a week (18), broke the record for unique participants in a year (19), saw 3 new QOMs and 3 new KOMs on the challenge segments, and plenty of other excellent performances. The results this week are age-adjusted meaning that rider times for each of the three challenge segments is adjusted as though they are the age of the youngest rider in the field. This means that the youngest rider (24) gets their times multiplied by 1, the oldest rider (68) gets their times multiplied by 0.864, and a rider with the median age of the field for Week Three of Coviduro [Again] (47) gets their times multiplied by 0.972 etc.. This slower-with-age model is based on how the performances of riders in the 2016-2022 BRX races from each single-age population differed from the entire field of riders. PF had the fastest ride of the week up TELEDILDONIC but after a 10-second penalty, “Wisconsonian” CH’s 4th fastest all-time performance moved into the top ranking for the 1st challenge segment. JR and BD smoked The Wallow on Monday evening but “Wooden-Nickel Jesus” CH smashed the KOM 24 hours later to turn in the top performance of the week. For the 3rd challenge segment (I Think I Hit My Head), BD and GC set Q and KOMs on Monday evening but “Definitely Retired” CH knocked another 10 seconds off of the KOM on Tuesday for another outstanding performance. raw datas
With 2 new KOMs in Week Three, CH becomes the first ever non-Michigan resident in history to win a Coviduro week. GC turned in his 2nd 2nd place in as many weeks, JR rebounded from a slow Week Two to finish 3rd, and RB placed 4th for the 3rd consecutive week.

Week Four
Course
Mount Pleasant is not a hilly place. There. Someone has to say it. Maybe someone from Midland would think that it’s hilly here but they are wrong. With this in mind, the Week Four course goes out and finds some of our steepest hills and rides back and forth over them. It’s basically like Barry-Roubaix without Peter Stetina buying you a beer at the end. The Week Four course may be completed at any time between (and including) Thursday, May 12th, 2022 and Tuesday May 17th, 2022.
-Course: Strava or Garmin
-Time Trial: Swingin A Big Hammer (13.38 mi +970/-970’)
-Bonus Segment 1: Reverse Spandex (1.95 mi +268/-196’)
-Bonus Segment 2: Spandex Enormity (1.95 mi +202/-276’)
Interactive map for Week Four- click on the segments for information.
Scoring
Week Four contains a time trial with two “bonus” segments contained within. On the way out, riders will encounter Reverse Spandex and on the return trip, they will ride Spandex Enormity. For each of the Spandexes, riders will receive a “bonus” of 6 seconds subtracted from their time for each rider that they beat. The fastest time trial (after the segment “bonuses” are subtracted) will win the day.
Results
BD crushed it in Week Four turning in the top performance in the TT and for both of the bonus segments, setting a new QOM on Reverse Spandex and bettering the QOM set earlier in Week Four by NS in the TT. For weeks 2-5, we multiply the challenge segment times for riders that identify as F (Q on Strava) by 0.874. This time adjustment factor is based on the differences between the performance of riders that identify as F or M at the BRX races in 2016-18 (during weeks 1 and 6, the scoring involves riders compete against themselves so this calculation is not used). After Week Four, female riders account for 12% of Coviduro [Again] participation and 50% of wins. Riders with long, flowing hair account for 75% of wins (and only 14% of participation). By comparison, female participants in the BRX races has held steady at 14% from 2016-2022. KD managed 2nd place overall on a full-suspension MTB and, after three consecutive weeks at 4th place, RB managed a 3rd place overall with TM finishing 4th. GC took a wrong turn and managed to spend 2:50 off of the TT course which dropped him from a hypothetical 4th place in Week Four to 7th (but he did get to see a really cool snek!). The overall position for most of the riders was not affected by the bonus segments with the exception of BW and UB each moving up one spot at the expense of JR and PR respectively. raw datas

Scoring
More expensive bikes are faster, right? Right? For Week Five, we are considering the advantages of newer, more technologically advanced (and, of course, more expensive) bikes on the effects of Coviduro performance. The “working” model for performance “correction factor” based on bike price comes from a meta-analysis of several YouTube videos (mostly GCN) where riders test a cheaper bike and a more expensive bike on the same course and report how much faster the expensive bike was. The way to interpret the model (shown as a red line below) is that for bikes valued at greater than $4305, there is no effect related to the cost of the bike. Any rider completing Week Five on a bike that is valued at or greater than $4305 will have their challenge segment times unaltered (multiplied by 1). For riders on bikes valued at less than $4305, there is a steepening curve that bottoms out at $0 and a correction factor of 0.82. A rider on a bike valued at $1000 will have their challenge segment times multiplied by 0.89.
Riders will receive a segment score based on the quotient of their price-adjusted performance and the adjusted performance of the fastest rider for that segment during Week Five (fastest time/your time) and the largest sum of the three segments scores wins the day. In order to be included in the scoring, you must bring your bike, as ridden during the Week Five ride, to Motorless Motion before the end of business on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022. Head mechanic/owner/manager Mike will perform a (very) precursory assessment of your bike (no inspection, no looking things up, etc.) and give you a number rounded to the nearest US dollar which is the value of your bike for this week. His number is final. If Mike values your Week Five bike at greater than $4305, then you may indicate that it’s value as >$4305. It is your responsibility to report this number for scoring- in your ride description, or you may provide it to the scoring subcommittee in private if you don’t feel that this should be public information. Anyone who does not receive/report a bike appraisal using the appropriate channels with have their bike valued at 1.5 Brads. If Mike knows the CURRENT setup of the bike that you rode/will be riding intimately, you may get this information without a physical trip to the shop. Please use your judgement and try to minimize the amount of work on Mike’s end and maybe buy him a beer. Riders must also submit a G-rated portrait image of the bike that they rode for Week Five. Images can be included with your Strava activity, posted to the Bike League GroupMe (private) group, or both. Any rider that fails to submit an appropriate image will have 10 seconds added to their time on each of their challenge segments. Riders who choose to ride the Week Five course more than once will have their all of their performances analyzed by the scoring subcommittee and their fastest (adjusted) performance will be used for overall scoring purposes.
Results
Week Five featured 15 riders competing on bikes that ranged in value from $500 to $5,000 and up.

The week’s top performances were dominated by riders on bikes valued at $1200 and under.
On Curvy Man Curvy, PF bettered the KOM by 2 seconds but KD was only 3 seconds back on a bike valued at ½ as much. RB had the fastest time up his home hill of Tim Danglemasters but lost out to KD, GC, and PF after adjusting for bike value. PF and MF where the best at Sharron Peters but not good enough to hold off KD and his Fuji. raw datas
KD won Week Five with the top performance on all 3 challenge segments, over PF and GC.

Scoring
For the Week Six Segmageddonathonocalypse, scoring will be handicapped based on rider’s previous performance in weeks 1-5. For each segment (including the TT) ridden in weeks 1-5, riders will receive a score that is the quotient of the fastest rider’s raw time/their raw time for that segment. This means that whoever rode the fastest on a particular segment gets a 1 and everyone else gets a number less than one with the slowest rider getting the smallest number. The handicap for each rider is based the average of their scores renormalized so that the greatest number is 1 (for the fastest rider in weeks 1-5). Rider times for all 11 segments in Week Six will be multiplied by the rider’s handicap and riders will receive a segment score based on the quotient of their handicap-adjusted performance and the adjusted performance of the fastest rider for that segment during Week Six (fastest time/your time) and the largest sum of the 11 segments scores wins the day. M riders who wish to ride Week Six without having ridden in weeks 1-5 will be given a handicap of 1 and F riders who wish to ride week 6 without having ridden in weeks 1-5 will be given a handicap of 0.874.
If the overall fastest performances without any additional “alternative” calculations like age, sex, weight, bike value, etc. are of interest to you, the handicap calculated for Week Six is as close to an effective measure of raw performance over the first 5/6 of the Coviduro [Again] as you will see here. The outstanding single ride in Week Three by CH puts him out front with KD and GC rounding out the “local” talent neck and neck at 0.95 and 0.94 and many more performances that are similarly close down the line. If you are interested (and a huge nerd), the performances of a riders with negative skewness values are dominated by faster performances with a few slower outliers in the mix whereas a positive skewness value indicates that the rider had their outliers on the fast side.

Coviduro [Again] Handicap Going Into Week Six |
Results
The final week of Coviduro [Again] saw 1 new KOM (GC on Slap Earl), 3 new QOMs (BD on Hasta, Juicy, and Slap Earl), and an amazing 39!!! new segment PRs. raw datas

KD PRed on 9 of the 11 segments to finish in 4th place in Week Six and NS rode to 8 new segment PRs to finish 3rd but it was BW coming into Week Six with a 0.88 handicap who won the week with a solid performance including 1 new segment PR to become the only rider to win during more than 1 week this year.
Overall Results [After Week Six = FINAL]
In the overall standings, BD held onto 4th for the third week in a row and will retain the title of Q4 for Coviduro [Again] into perpetuity. Fun Fact: If PF had Juicy Sprint’ed 1 second slower in Week Six, he would have traded positions with BD for that week giving her 1 more point in the overall standings which would have tied her with RB in 3rd place overall. Since both BD and RB rode all 6 weeks, the tie would have been broken with the rider’s best weekly finish (1 for BD vs 3 for RB) moving BD into 3rd overall and RB into 4th. TM clinched that Second-Place Texan award in the first (and possibly last) year that the accolade has been/will be assigned.

Coviduro [Again] Overall Score and Rank After Week Six [Final] |

In 22 weeks of Coviduro racing over three years, 9 unique individuals have spent time in 4th place overall. JS finished 4th in the first year, PR finished 4th in year two, BD (aka Q4) has won 4th in year three, and RB has spent the most time in 4th with 8 weeks in 4th.
The Coviduro [Again] saw 19 unique participants with 13 riders completing all 6 rides and 3 new riders. 6 riders have now completed all 3 years worth of Coviduro rides (11+6+6=23) [JR, JS, PF, PL, PR, and SD]. This year saw plenty of fast riding with 6 new KOMs on 5 segments and 11 new QOMs on 10 segments! The top of the field saw an influx of geographic diversity with the first non-MI resident week winner, the first non-US citizen participant (and week winner), and (at least) two Texans. The 6 courses added up to over 206 total miles (from The Hill) with 26 (35.37 miles worth) of challenge segments. Overall, we had over 3213 participation miles (from The Hill). Thanks to everyone that participated (and helped out) and start preparing for 4duro (pronounced “Quatroduro”) in 2023 (unless someone comes up with a better name).
