Why Use the Baseball App?

For those of us who can't get enough baseball trivia, the baseball app allows you to choose a current MLB team name from the dropdown list to display team salary data that is publicly available, in boxplot form, which includes:

  • Median salaries and quartile data within the boxes
  • “Whiskers” that extend to the highest salary that is not an outlier
  • Symbols that show the outlier salary value(s) for the team
  • Yearly trends in data are displayed, for years that are available
  • The highest outlier is labeled with player name

How the data are obtained

All date were obtained from The Lahman Baseball Database website, available at:

http://www.seanlahman.com/baseball-archive/statistics/

Which states:

“The updated version of the database contains complete batting and pitching statistics from 1871 to 2014, plus fielding statistics, standings, team stats, managerial records, post-season data, and more. For more details on the latest release, please read the documentation.”
