Gas prices in European countries 2017-2021

Gas prices have risen enormously in recent years. In view of the sharp rise in energy prices, the EU Commission is planning a series of emergency measures. These include, for example, price caps and joint gas purchases.

Specifically, the EU Commission is proposing to regulate prices for consumers and small businesses. States could buy electricity on the market and make it available to particularly needy customers more cheaply. In addition, the countries should also be able to intervene in wholesale by setting a fixed electricity price and financially compensating producers for this. In addition, an EU-wide maximum price for gas could be set.

The development of prices can be followed in the following plot:

Shiny application

An app could bring great relief in the analysis of the more precise course of prices

  • This project shows an application of Shiny. The app was created to facilitate the analysis of the data set. The app refers to the Eurostat gas price data set.

  • My Shiny App is an interactive tool that allows users to view a dataset of gas prices in the European Union and then select from a set of options the ones they want.

  • The period in question is 2017-2021. The dates are divided into 2 halves of the year.

-The data source can be found at: link.

Work with the app

  • In the left panel there are 3 drop down menus. The user can select a country, year and half year.

  • The user then finds the results in a table on the right-hand side in the first panel.

  • On the right in the bottom panel, the user can view a plot of the desired results to better understand the data.

  • The plot will be seen immediately after country selection and will not be affected by the other 2 choices (year and half year). It shows the gas prices in each country or the gas price in the European Union as an average.

  • The prices are in euros.

What’s the Point?

  • In recent years, the topic of “gas price” has become very important.

  • The app enables a very good comparison of prices in Europe.

  • You can also find seasonal effects directly and use them for analysis.
