Brewers vs. Red Sox Twitter Account Analysis

I am going to analyze the tweets of the Red Sox and Brewers twitter accounts. I thought this would be interesting as the Brewers are considered one of the funniest and most interactive accounts in baseball and seem to make waves twitter where as the Red Sox are a more “traditional club” that takes itself more seriously on social media it seems.

Which team is more active?

To answer this question I decided to narrow the data down to the period of March 15 through the 29th because there was a lockout earlier in the year and many teams did not tweet very much. This narrows it down to a period when teams have been active and the start of the season is ramping up. I will aggregate by the number of tweets a day for this analysis. My guess is that the Brewers will have more tweets per day.

Results:

I performed analysis using a line graph which gives us a sense of the trend for the two accounts over the period. The results show that my guess that the Brewers would have more tweeets per day was close. Overall the two ballclubs were pretty close. The Brewers had more tweets 8 out of the 15 days. Overall this was much closer than I expected as I thought that the Brewers would have blown them out in terms of their number of tweets. March 23rd seems to be an outlier but it is kind of interesting that the Red Sox had 50 tweets that day (as a Red Sox fan I can tell you this is because of the signing of Trevor Story).

How do followers actually interact with the two accounts

Now lets analyze the interaction with the account over this period to see if there are more people that interacted with either account. I will divide the numbers we get by the amount of followers to help account for the size of the cities and number of fans for that team.

Explanation of Process:

I used favorites as a proxy for interaction with an account for this question. I used the same period of 3/15-3/29 but this time I calculated the percentage of followers that favorite each day while accounting for number of posts by dividing the sum of the number of favorites divided by the number of posts a day to get a number of favorites per post per day and then I divided that by the number of followers.

Results:

The Brewers had a higher percentage of followers that favorited posts in 9 of 15 or 60% of the days in the data set. This graph kind of resembles the overall feel of the first graph with both clubs being closer than I expected. It is interesting that on the day that the Red Sox had so many tweets as we saw in the first visual on March 23rd, they were only a little bit ahead of the Brewers in terms of favorites. This might lead be to think that maybe the more you tweet, maybe there might be less interaction by followers because their timeline is so full. This would take more research, but just a thought!

What percentage of tweets are not replies from each account

This is an interesting statistic to look at to assess the number of original or retweeted material rather than replies as replies are usually not as interesting to me personally on a timeline than retweets and original posts.

Results:

For this we get kind of an interesting result. In the first visual we saw that the two teams were kind of close overall in the number of tweets per day, but this visual above shows that the Brewers had about 20% less tweets that were replies to other tweets. This tells me that for this time period at least that the Brewers were a little more original or interesting in their tweets in that they weren’t just active because they were responding to others.
