Throughout this report, we will be looking at various causes of delayed flights. Below is a reference guide for how causes of delay are defined:
Air Carrier: The cause of the cancellation or delay was due to circumstances within the airline’s control (e.g. maintenance or crew problems, aircraft cleaning, baggage loading, fueling, etc.).
Extreme Weather: Significant meteorological conditions (actual or fore-casted) that, in the judgment of the carrier, delays or prevents the operation of a flight such as tornado, blizzard or hurricane.
National Aviation System (NAS): Delays and cancellations attributable to the national aviation system that refer to a broad set of conditions, such as non-extreme weather conditions, airport operations, heavy traffic volume, and air traffic control.
Late-arriving aircraft: A previous flight with same aircraft arrived late, causing the present flight to depart late.
Security: Delays or cancellations caused by evacuation of a terminal or concourse, re-boarding of aircraft because of security breach, inoperative screening equipment and/or long lines in excess of 29 minutes at screening areas.
This report will analyze the airport delays of 29 airports from 2003-06-01 to 2013-03-01.

Interpretation:
Flight Delays at ATL
If a flight is delayed at ATL:
The probability that the flight is delayed due to weather is 0.038
The probability that the flight is delayed due to late aircraft is 0.283
There is no correlation between size of airport and probability of delay (r = -0.006).
There is no correlation between size of airport and probability of cancellation (r = 0.193).
Larger airports tend to have longer delay times (r = 0.336).
Due to limitations with the data set it is difficult to draw conclusions as to which carriers are responsible for the most delays. More data is needed to help inform your travel decisions.
How do your employees make travel decisions? This data can be used to influence travel policy via policies in your travel platform.
Recommendation: Use this application to anticipate airport inefficiencies and avoid flight complications.
