Introduction

The data below is sourced from the daily reports of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, the National Health Commission, and JHU CSSE for Hong Kong. Tables and charts begin on the 6th of March for technical reasons.

The Chinese government uses three categories of cases: asymptomatic, confirmed, and cases that are converted from asymptomatic to confirmed. Below, Daily New Cases refers to the sum of asymptomatic and confirmed cases minus the number of converted cases. Unless data specifically refers to a type of case (asymptomatic, confirmed, in isolation, etc.), this substraction of converted cases was done everywhere to reach a net number of cases.

Efforts have been made to eliminate inaccuracies, but small errors in source data or processing might occur. Street-related data is generally released a few hours later and thus might be delayed.

Update 2 June 2022: This will be the last update going forward. I might add some days if a new outbreak occurs soon, but most likely a new page for separate analysis would be better.

Version History

  • V1.0: 16 March: Used machine translation to first translate the text and then process it with regex.
  • V1.1: 17 March: Used the original Chinese texts and then processed them with much simpler regex scripts. Less error prone.
  • V1.2: 17 March: Added automatic checks for quality control.
  • V1.3: 18 March: Added popup tooltips to the district table to show streets.
  • V1.4.1: 19 March: Changed the popup tooltips to show summarized info instead of all individual streets.
  • V1.4.2: 19 March: Integrated the new separate reports on street information into the district overview.
  • V1.4.3: 19 March: Added heatmapping.
  • V1.5.1: 20 March: Added real maps.
  • V1.5.2: 21 March: Slight visual overhaul.
  • V1.5.3: 21 March: Trying out different scales. The higher numbers obfuscate changes at the lower levels.
  • V1.5.4: 22 March: Added the first growth table. Tried plotly charts. They’re nice but didn’t work well on phones.
  • V1.6.1: 23 March: Changed tooltips to accommodate more information.
  • V1.7.1: 27 March: The Shanghai website no longer shows individual cases and now summarizes them in batches. This invalidated all my old regex code. I’ve switched to the National Health Commission website to get new daily data, which is easier to parse, but they don’t have individual cases either, only a text summary.
  • V1.7.2: 29 March: Added some sparklines to the end of the table.
  • V1.7.3: 30 March: Switched to area plots instead of stacked bar charts. Gives a much clearer picture of trends.
  • V1.8.1: 2 April: Added district statistics table.
  • V1.9.1: 12 April: Changed data source again. The NHC website no longer lists districts. Reverted back to the Shanghai Health Commission.
  • V1.9.2: 20 April: Removed the street popovers. There was too much data and they weren’t useful anymore.
  • V2.0.0: 25 April: Greatly expanded the first table, incorporated numbers on converted cases and those found in isolation, added logistic model predictions.
  • V2.0.1: 26 April: Added deaths, plot of cases outside isolation, log model for Jilin as comparison.
  • V2.0.2: 1 May: Consistently subtracted cases that are converted to confirmed from the total number of cases, including on district levels.
  • V2.0.3: 27 May: Changed predictions to short-term only. Added animated map for the whole Shanghai outbreak.
