The role of self-uncertainty in within- as well as intergroup relations attracts continuous attention of researchers (Jost et al., 2007; Hogg, 2010; McGregor et al, 2010). In our research, we asked (a) how experience of self-uncertainty affects the relationship between authoritarianism and intergroup attitudes and (b) how this relationship is modified by a degree of ingroup identification. According to Duckitt (2001), authoritarian ideology is a means of coping with unpredictable and dangerous social world. Therefore, it might be expected that inducing uncertainty of ones’ own self should activate authoritarian attitudes, resulting in stronger negative effects of RWA on intergroup attitudes and feelings. However, we hypothesize that these effects might be buffered by identification with one’s own group due to feelings of togetherness, security, and trust aroused by ingroup belongeness (e.g. Brewer, 2007) which are likely to mitigate negative feelings induced by self-uncertainty. Highly supportive to Brewer’s position, the most recent studies (e.g., Nakashima et al., 2013; Sani et al., 2013) reveal that high ingroup identification decreases level of depression and stress, and enhances life and job satisfaction. In two online studies we found that, under low national identification (Cameron scale in the 1st study, Leach scale in the 2nd study) induction of self-uncertainty increased negative impact of RWA (Funke scale) on attitudes toward immigrants (on warmth, trustworthiness, and social distance dimensions). However, under high national identification, these effects disappeared. Apparently, high ingroup identification disarms authoritarianism, acting as a buffer against self-uncertainty threat and de-activating of authoritarian attitudes.

Manipulation:
in the experimental condition, participants were asked to recall and describe a situation in which they felt uncertain about themselves.
in the control condition, they were asked to describe how they spent last weekend
In reference to 3 immigrants groups: Ukrainians, Arabs and Wietnameese (each group separately), participant attitudes were measured, such as:
social distance (2 items)
trust (1 item)
liking (2 items)
social issues (immigrants threaten labour market, take our jobs, are here only for social benefits: 4 items)
Fear of the outgroup (5 items)
Other measures: Conservative beliefs, National group essentialism
Measures of attitudes for different group were aggregated, in order to obtain more universal index of attitudes towards immigrants in general.
A series of multiple regressions were run, separately for each index as a dependent variable. Each model contained following independent variables:
authoritarianism
self - uncertainty manipulation
identification with the national group
and possible interaction terms, up to the 3 way interaction (RWA X manipulation X identification).
If the model was significant, an additional analysis of simple slopes was performed.
An alternative models were checked, with SDO replacing RWA.
