I chose to look at analyze Spotify data because I am fascinated by the music industry and the analytics behind what makes a certain song or artist popular. This data set consists of popular music data from Spotify. It tracks the most popular songs from 2020 to 2021. The data consists of the song name, the artist name, the amount of streams the song has, what genre of music the song is, how many followers the artist has, the songs highest charting position, the number of times a song has charted, the week of the song’s highest charting position, the song ID, the release date, the amount of weeks charted, the songs popularity, danceability, energy, loudness, speechiness, acousticness, liveness, tempo, duration, valence, and the chord the song was written in.
I was curious about the relationship between how popular a song was and if it depended on the songs danaceability score. A lot of “pop” songs are more upbeat and fast paced so my previous exposure to pop music prompted the curiosity behind the question.
Looking at the graph, for a majority that had a danceability score above .50 were popular. However, the line of best fit shows their is very little correlation between danceability and popularity. Along with that, all of the songs within the data are supposedly “popular” so this graph could be better by analyzing a different variable against danecability.
C is the most common chord for artists so I was curious about the distribution of popular songs and the chord that they were written in. This is partly dependent on the Artist, their writing style and the genre of music they sing but it was definitely interesting to look at which chords were used more than others.
These results in the visualization is interesting looking at the distribution of popular song for each chord. Some chords are definitely more popular than others like, C & C# were very popular compared to chords like D# and E. Each chord has some outliers but that is to be expected because popularity is somewhat relative to each person listening to music and their preferences.
I was curious about if the chord of the song influences the amount of streams a song had and I decided to look at Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo specifically for this visualization. Both artists were some of the most popular artists over the course of 2021 and both released albums so I thought it would be interesting to look at them specifically
I focused on specifically Taylor swift & Olivia Rodrigo because I enjoy their music but I also knew that both artists have a significant amount of streams. It is interesting to see this as a boxplot because you can the range between a very established artist like Taylor Swift compared to a new one like Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia has one chord (A) which did extremely well her. This is most likely her breakout song, Driver’s License, since this was one of the most streamed song all of 2021 I think it would be interesting to look at this further based off the album, because many times for Taylor Swift specifically each album has a consistent vibe or tone.
I wanted to look at Ed Sheeran specifically for this question because I knew he would have a lot of songs within the data. I was curious about the how the chord of the song influences the energy of the song beause some chords are historically a happy tone with a high energy whereas other chords are the complete opposite.
I picked orange for the color because Ed is a ginger so its kind of fitting.Anyways similar to question 3 I thought I would single out 1 artist that has a lot of songs in different chords & energies. I think this interesting still because, the most common chord ‘C’ is not used at all, His highest energy chord is B which isn’t very surprising because it is more of lighter and more upbeat chord & a lot of his songs are pretty upbeat, light and very acoustic guitar based so that makes sense.
I was curious about the tempo of a song influenced the amount of times a Morgan Wallen songs were streamed. I wanted to look at Morgan Wallen specifically because he is a newly popular country music artists who has recently gained a lot of traction.
I did some research on the average tempo of genres of music and I found that the average tempo of country music is less than 100 bpm which is in line with Morgan Wallens’s most streamed song. However, since some people consider his music to be a combo of pop & country it makes sense that a good amount of his songs are above 100 bpm but still have over 4M streams. He is a newer artist so I think over time if I were to pull more spotify data I think I would find more points on the graph, as there are only 7 currently.
