For my project I plan on studying the prison system in the United States and specifically how policies have changed over time. There is a government database of all policies, laws, and committee meetings with transcriptions of what was said or what the law is that was made. The website is https://www.senate.gov/reference/reference_index_subjects/Laws_and_Regulations_vrd.htm. There is also a database where you can see this as well at individual state levels. So, my basic goal is to research how people have talked about prison policy and how laws have changed about prison policy. There is an interesting archive as well that details all senate journals in Massachusetts that I may be able to go through and find certain words annd phrases throughout time. I plan on use the commands token_compound and then use pattern = phrase(“rehabilitation” or “help”) and see how positively connoted words that are aimed to help and rehabilitate prisoners has varied. I would also use a similar command to see words like punish or hurt or generally derogatory terms are used to describe prison policy.
