Prospective Texts

I would like to work with works of fiction. I am unsure of what kind of question I would ask about fiction, besides a general inquiry into the text patterns in fiction.

I would use Project Gutenburg’s Science Fiction category to choose my fiction texts because I cannot use texts that are not public domain, and the science fiction category is the largest fiction category they have.

Since I would be working with public domain science fiction, my text analysis would reflect the general patterns of science fiction from before 1925. This could help make my question more specific.

Another way to format this question is to use the Science Fiction Written by Women category to compare the writing style of science fiction in general to that of women at the time period.

Another idea I had for texts to work with was to use fanfiction(fiction written about a certain media by a fan) from Archive of Our Own to analyse the patterns of modern fanworks. Since there are over 8 million works on the archive, a more specific subset of the works available would be used. This set of search parameters only brings up completed works that are not explicit and only written about one media, sorted from most to least popular. There are still almost half a million works, so I could use the first however many are reasonable. Another way to look at this is to look at certain years that the fanworks were completed(or begun) and compare any trends that happen over time.

I am uncertain of the plausibility of working with fanfiction, which is why I started off with the public domain science fiction questions.
