This is a summary of some exploratory data analysis examining data from Washington water audits from 2007-2020

1 Loss data by population served

A look at the water loss data for all years (2007-2020) for all municipalities broken down by population served. A few notes about this table:
Minimum population Maximum population Unique municipalities Median supplied water (Mil Gal/Yr) Median Leakage (Mil Gal/Yr) Median Percent Leakage (%)
0 50 388 1.4 0.1 7.3
50 96 390 2.2 0.2 7.0
96 200 388 4.4 0.4 7.9
200 935 463 17.4 1.6 9.2
935 788263 524 229.6 21.2 9.2
Note:
1) 80% of the municipalities have < 935 residents in the ‘FTRPop’ column, that seems like an odd distribution to me and 2) Leakage is a combination of real and apparent losses as Washington State doesn’t report both

2 Water losses through time

Looking at the supply and loss data through time. It doesn’t look like there is a clear trend with time.

3 Potential drivers of water loss

Crossplot of losses and percent losses with number of service connections broken down by populations served
