This analysis estimates historic cluster employment in D1 counties using BLS data.
Data for each county for each year for each 4-digit NAICS code is acquired from BLS. If a 4-digit NAICS code is part of a cluster definition, that 4-digit NAICS industry is considered to be a component of the cluster.
BLS/Census hides some information to protect firm privacy. The Census notes: “Aggregate of cells not released because component cells do not meet U.S. Census Bureau publication standards.” To account for this, County totals are also acquired, and any difference between the summed 4-digit codes and the county total is accounted for as an unreported industry.
