Concrete mixture strength learning tool

Peter Prevos, PhD

date: 1 January 2022

Introduction

Designing the right concrete mixture is a complex process of balancing many variables.

This application helps civil engineering students to explore the impact of concrete mixture decisions on compression strength based on five variables:

  • Curing time [days]
  • Water content [l/m3]
  • Cement content [kg/m3]
  • Fine aggregate [kg/m3]
  • Coarse Aggregate [kg/m3]

Application Usage

Students choose their concrete mixture and curing age, after which the application shows the predicted strength and a decision tree.

The application assists beginning engineering students to understand the relationships between the five variables and concrete strength.

Decision Tree

The application uses a Regression Tree, based on data published by Yeh (1998).

A decision tree emulates the types of decisions made by engineers when designing concrete mixtures.

Conclusion

The application is great tool to provide students a first introduction into the decisions that guide good concrete mixture design.
