Authoritarianism arrives not because people say that they want it,but because they lose the ability to distinguish between facts and desires. —TIMOTHY SNYDER, THE ROAD TO UNFREEDOM (2018) -- ## Why Visualization matters > Good charts can help us make smarter decisions. -- > Good charts are useful because they untangle the complexity of numbers, making them more concrete and tangible. However, charts can also lead us to spot patterns and trends that are dubious, spurious, or misleading, particularly when we pair them with the human brain’s tendency to read too much into what we see and to always try to confirm what we already believe. --- class: inverse, center, middle <b> ### Good visualizations… #### Clearly and accurately convey the key messages in the data <br> ### Bad visualizations… #### Obfuscate the data (either through ignorance, or malice!) --- class: center, middle <b> ## [less is more](https://speakerdeck.com/cherdarchuk/clear-off-the-table?slide=5) --- class: inverse, center, middle ## Its not Numbers but Numbers Which Matter --- class: inverse, center, middle ## World can’t be explained without numbers but numbers alone cant explain the world. --- class: inverse ## Difference between your data and metrics <b> ### [dosomething](dosomething.org) : 1.5m views, sports equipment, 8 viewers singed , zero donated. -- ### Viewers not a success-donation is -- ### What happened?
