Introduction

The July monthly release from SafeGraph,a company that works with cell phone location data has four different datasets that helps in tracing the information about where the person is at a given time to location-data services who then sell to places like Safegraph. With the help of this data a lot of information can be extracted, transformed, and loaded - all of which eventually can tell different stories with the help of different visualizations to the audience.

Which Industry Type is the most visited in the Month of July?

In this visual, I wanted to better understand the breakdown of Total visits in July 2020 by Industry Type. I was curious if there was one particular Industry type skewing the visual.

The above visualization shows that, the most visited industry in July 2020 is Nonresidential Buildings (Shopping Malls) of 417370 visits alone and Full-Service restaurants and Nature Parks were the second most visited industry in July 2020. It’s surprising to see lot of people in the public places such as Malls and Nature Parks during the Pandemic.July is the month of summer break and hence, we could see are more of recreational and leisure activities. In the other spectrum, the fitness centers shows the least visited in July 2020 this might be because majority of the fitness centers were closed during the pandemic and also people may wanted to wait until after Covid-19 to return back to the gym, thus resulting in lowest number of visits in the “Fitness and Recreation” category in July 2020.

Is there a pattern of visits between Weekday and Weekend?

The number of visits in different industries have been analysed above, further I would want to know whether there is different traffic in between weekdays and weekends and see if there are any trends. There are two seperate graphs created, one for indicating weekdays and the other for indicating weekends, and see how traffic and thus the trends for two lines differ.

From the visualization above, the line for weekdays which is represented in Blue has a irregular pattern of traffic and there is increase in traffic on random days.On the other hand, the line for weekends which is represented in light brown shows some kind of pattern of ups-and-downs and from the visual we could interpret that saturdays have a higher traffic than on Sunday except for July 4th which is a Saturday and as it’s a National Holiday there is low visits. Overall,More of the visits are happening during weekdays and it is, in fact, no surprise since most people go to work or run errands during weekdays than during weekends, when they usually stay home and relax.

Which Day of the Week has higher Visits for a Business in July 2020?

As it clearly showed in the previous Analysis that Weekdays had higher visits than the weekends. I would further like to know which weekday has higher traffic in July 2020.I have highlighted the top 3 days with the highest visits.

From the above analysis we can infer that Fridays has the higher number of visits as we see around 666,000 through cellphone data alone on Friday in the month of July followed by Wednesday and Thursday which had the second highest visits.Saturday and Sunday shows lower visits compared to rest of the weekdays. The reason behind this might be because there was the outbreak of COVID-19 and most companies followed work from home there was more flexibility and people usually run errands during weekdays than during weekends and people might have stayed home during the weekends and relaxing.

Top 10 Large Brands most visited on Friday, Thursday and Wednesday in July 2020

In this visual, I wanted to better understand the breakdown of daily visits by brand. The previous visual clearly indicated that overall, weekend visits are less frequent and Friday, Thursday and Wednesday had the highest visits and I was curious to know if there was one particular brand skewing the visual on Friday, Thursday and Wednesday.

We can see that on all Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the most visits happened at UW Medicine, followed by Starbucks,Costco Wholesale and Target . The result is indeed understandable, since the brands above offer essential goods and services in people’s everyday lives such as food, supplies for both home & office, groceries, and gas. As indicated above, however, there are many small brands that are not classified in the original data which have no value and thus all lumped together, thus it makes sense to have relatively few visits even for top most visited brands. We can also observe here none of the top brands belong to the top NIACs Industry of Non-residential buildings/Shopping Malls and this might be because most of the brands in the dataset are unidentified.

Visits pattern in July 2020 at UW Medicine

I would further like to know the pattern of traffic in July 2020 at UW Medicine as from the previous analysis UW Medicine is the most visited brand in July 2020.

I filtered this visual to focus on UW Medicine as the previous visual showed UW Medicine had the most visits and the above visualization interprets the overall traffic at UW Medicine in July 2020. Overall traffic was determined by the number of visits each day and the average visits were 4136 in July 2020. The lowest peaks occured during holidays and on Sundays. Monday shows the highest percentage change from prior day (Sunday) and the overall highest peak in July was on the 9th of July which was Thursday.Overall,More of the visits are happening during weekdays than the weekends.

Neighborhood visits to Top 10 Large Brands and Top 10 NAICS

As we analysed the top 10 most visited Large brands and top 10 most visited NAICS in the previous analysis I would like to further understand the Neighborhood visits of these top 10 brands and NAICS.The visualization below shows each of the district within King county in different colors and labels with total visits count to make the distinction easier.

The first graph shows the Neighborhood visits to top 10 Large Brands in Seattle and mostly, visits are happening in the Northwest,Greater Duwamish and Southwest districts. For the top 10 brands locations people majorly visited south part of the King county and Northwest districts. However, we see a large visits count in the other districts also which might be because all the top brands offer essential goods and services in people’s everyday lives as we saw in the analysis above. Similarly, the second graph shows the Neighborhood visits to top Large Name NAICS (Industry Type) and mostly, visits are from the Greater Duwamish, Northwest and southeast districts.People visited south part of the King county and the Northwest districts to visit the top 10 NAICS locations.
