The hallmarks of globalization include increased exchanges of goods and services, cross border flow of capital, migration, and increased exchanges of ideas. An objective measure of the global impact of scholarly work has important applications including promoting social science research into technology diffusion. In addition, the conscientious academic scientist could use this measure for the purposes of self-assessment, academic promotion, and guiding their scientific activities to promote global idea transfer. The H-index, R-index, h2 index, i10 index, and dissemination index are author level metrics designed to assess an authors’ overall scientific impact. However, in the age of increasing globalization, new methods may be valuable to understand not only overall research impact, but also specifically the impact of research across borders. The objective of this study was to develop a framework to understand and quantify the global impact of scientific publications by examining cross-border citations of academic journal publications.
We accessed the PubMed Application Programming Interface to obtain publication and citation data for English-language peer reviewed scientific publications. An author sample was subsequently obtained using Oracle SQL Developer, and data analyses was performed using R Analytics.
For each author examined, we determined the number of scholarly articles published and the number of cross border citations for each article. We developed an author level global impact index using these cross border citations. This new index is analogous to the widely used h-index, such that an author’s global impact index is equal to the number of published peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts with at least that number of cross border citations. Global heat maps for each author were also generated.
Kelly pulled publication data for one author (includes all publications?) from pubmeds API.
Specifies author’s name and pulls all publications from pubmed (first, middle, or last author).
Then pull the articles that cite the specified author.
Next, for each article that cites specified author, pull all the citation’s authors.
Finally, pull all affiliation information for the citation’s authors.
A country was only counted once per manuscript (eg. if 8 authors were from 8 different institutions in Spain, the country tally was 1 for Spain).
A manuscript can have multiple countries (eg. a citation manuscript had 3 authors from USA, 2 from China, and 2 from Uganda, the country tally was 1 USA, 1 China, 1 Uganda).
We selected a sampling of neurosurgeons from different specialties, at different stages of their careers, and with varying levels of involvement in global neurosurgery. Dr(s). Warf, Park, and Haglund are heavily involved in global neurosurgery. Of note, these definitions do not account for outlier publications.
