Dialysis & Kidney transplantation for undocumented immigrants with ESRD

- 37 yrold man, admitted with loss of appetite, nausea, wtloss, swollen hands and feet
- Work-up: end-stage renal disease -&gt;physician recommends admission for emergency dialysis
- Pt reveals he is undocumented and has no health insurance
- Came to US 17 yrsago. Farm worker. Spouse and three children at home (in US)
- Receives emergency dialysis (through EMTALA)
- Not eligible for outpatient dialysis or kidney transplant through EMTALA, ACA (Obama Care), or Medicaid
- Once stabilized, what should the care team/hospital do?

# Activity 2: Altruistic kidney donation

1. Is it ethically justifiable to allow or even encourage the solicitation of organs? What kinds of conditions may make this practice less versus more problematic?

2. How do you like the kidney chain solution to shortage in organ transplantation?

3. Can you think of some policies or practices to address fairness and utility of organ donation?
