Instructions

Instructions

The outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020 lead to large scale lockdowns across the country. People were working from home, students were studying from home, travel was restricted and most businesses were closed, so there was nowhere to go anyway.

With so many people staying at home, the risk of people getting caught committing crimes such as break & enter and burglary of households increased as there was a much higher chance of someone being home.

Click on the tab for each state to see the history of crimes recorded from January 2014 to March 2021 and to see the change from April 2020 onwards.

The categories used to record crimes under varies from state to state. The numbers of crimes recorded in each state should not be compared to each other for this reason and also due to population differences, however, the impact of Covid-19 can still be seen within each state from April 2020.

The categories of crimes included for each state were:

  • ACT: Burglary
  • NSW: Break and enter dwelling; Steal from dwelling
  • NT: House break-ins, actual; House break-ins, attempted
  • QLD: Unlawful entry with intent - dwelling; Unlawful entry without violence - dwelling; Stealing from dwellings
  • SA: Other - unlawful entry with intent
  • VIC: Residential non-aggravated burglary (data reported annually)
