Problem Statement
Which of the business programs needs an additional faculty line?
Solution
The finance program desperately needs an additional line of full-time faculty. Its reliance on part-time faculty is unsustainably high. The finance program has the highest share of sections taught by part-time faculty within the Business Academic Unit.

BAU Course Schedule and Faculty Data
The course schedule data used in this analysis were downloaded from the banner Course Search for 2020 Fall, 2021 Spring, and 2021 Fall. Excluded from the downloaded course sections are:
- graduate course sections
- non-BU courses (e.g., economics)
- sections whose Part of Term includes “Indivisualized”
- sections whose Title includes “Internship”
- non-required business courses: 1) Business Computer Applications, 2) Career Exploration, 3) Professional Employment and 4) Plymouth Mktg & Design Agency. These courses are excluded because their program designation is not clear. In addition, they are often taught by part-time instructors.
The list of faculty by the program was gleaned from the University’s website and then edited based on the classes they teach. The courses are assigned to the academic programs using this list of faculty by the program. In other words, the program designation of courses is determined based on who taught the course. As a result, a course (e.g., Financial Accounting) can appear in more than one program since multiple faculty can teach a course. Also, a program can include an odd course (e.g., Organizational Communication in Finance) when faculty teaches a course outside their primary program of teaching. However, such a situation is rare.
The assignment of FT and PT was determined to the best of the author’s knowledge.
In the past three semesters, the BAU offered 293 such sections of 54 courses by 42 instructors, of whom 28 are full-time faculty.
