This house was originally designed for Richard and Mary Giffels. Richard was wheelchair bound, something that Bill, now partially paralyzed on his left side from a stroke, empathized with. He drew inspiration from Giffels’ situation and designed an accessible home that would allow Richard to bring the natural world around him inside. The home was set on steel beams strung across a steep ravine, with floor to ceiling windows and multiple large decks – to enjoy the beauty of this dramatic NE landscape and its seasonal changes all year round.

This house was originally designed for Ellen Phillips, Bill’s sister.
The house was built on an extra lot that originally belonged to his parent’s property. It had been left in its natural state until 1988. At that point, Elinor had become a bit frail, so they decided to build a house on the extra lot, so that her daughter Ellen could move in to be closer. Ellen lived there for about 4 years, leaving only after Elinor moved to Judson Manor.
