Where should I store my files/data?

We strongly recommend using either OneDrive or Dropbox to store your files. They are both cloud-based storage that works fairly seemlesly on your laptop. Which one to choose? OneDrive is provided by Middlebury College for free.

You’ll want to install the OneDrive client on your laptop. Go to Middlebury ITS Wiki for OneDrive and at the top, select either Mac or PC.

Set up and Organize a folder

Life is easier when things are organized. Before diving into the course, organize! If you are having problems seeing the folders in the video, be sure to zoom in.

Accessing STATA

STATA is a statistical application commonly used by economists. I strongly recommend purchasing a 6-month Stata/BE student license for your laptop link. Having STATA easily accessible promotes learning in the environment. If you plan on doing a thesis, consider the 12-month license. STATA is also available on campus computers such as LIB 140.

You can also use STATA on a campus computer. See this directory for where STATA is accessible.

Regardless of how you access STATA, you should save all of your work in OneDrive and follow the organization from up above.

Setting Paths

We first define a set of macros.

global dir "/Users/egong/Dropbox/Middlebury/Course_Archieve/Fall 2021/ECON_212/LABS/ATE/"
global DATA "$dir/DATA"

The first one global dir specifies that when we put $dir it will recall the long path above. The second one global DATA points to the DATA subfolder within the dir folder.

cd "$dir"
cd "$DATA"

Why is this useful? It you are collaborating, your partner only has to change the global dir path and then evertyhing else should be the same (assuming the subfolders are set up accordingly). You will frequently see this when I access data:

cd "$DATA"
use "data.dta", clear
