A very cheesy learning Log

Coding and R

When I first joined this course and then subsequently found out that it would mostly be coding, I was equal parts excited and anxious, since it was always a skill I wanted to take up - but conveniently never actually started. So this course kind of threw me into the deep end, and I had absolutely no clue what I was doing the first couple of weeks. I also ran into several software issues with both R, my onedrive and a bunch of other things making it frustrating because most of my issues weren’t even coding related. However, once I pushed past my problems, I was able to start to enjoy coding from about Week 5 onwards since it was so satisfying to actually see your code ouput do what you put in. But I think I really hit my stride into the later weeks and especially during the exploratory analysis portion. Coding was always daunting for me, and you’ll run into constant errors, but you learn to get through the hard parts and to actually enjoy coding. I personally will want to try my best to learn further coding, not only for R but perhaps even other languages like Python! If anyone out there is contemplating whether to join this course or not, or whether they’re on the fence about coding, please please just go for it!!

Never Give Up!

The value of group work

Okay so don’t get me wrong, this course is pretty darn good, BUT what solidfied it as the best course I think I’ve done at University yet is my group, I’ve had bad and good groups in the past years, however to have a group that is so cohesive, caring, understanding, super hard-working and to top it off just awesome people in general truly sold it for me. I’m honestly running out of words I can say for Samantha, Jia, Lauren and Torunn, I am so thankful for them understanding the frustrating issues I’ve had in the earlier weeks and how insane they are at coding. Every time one of us had an issue, we would almost immediately respond on slack and help troubleshoot the problem. I would not have gone anywhere close to finishing my verification section if I was alone and I hope what encapsulates the value of group work - is that you knowing that you’re not alone in your effort to code made it comforting to continue going ahead, at least it did for me. SO THANK YOU TO GROUP 1 FOR EVERYTHING THIS TERM!!

What you want to do with your psych degree

What I would like to do with my psychology degree has pretty much remained the same for me since first year, and that is to help people. It is a very vague goal, but I love learning about the sciences and trying to utilise that knowledge to help and support people. Whether thats in a motivational, organisational or clinical setting I’m not sure of, but this course has really highlighted not only the importance of learning, but that it can be enjoyable as-well. Therefore, the fruits of this labour is something I want to carry with me far past uni life!

A final message

Last of all, I would once again like to extend my thanks to Jenny S and Kate for everything they’ve done across this course, with all the motivation and technical support has been insane! My final thanks, while a bit personal, is to Jenny R for letting me into this course when I think I was just shy of the admission criteria, I don’t even know what I would have been like at the end of this term if I had not sat this course :D

BYE EVERYONE!!
