Crime Rate in Victoria

  • We often view Melbourne as a pretty safe place to live; after all we do live here
  • But how safe is it really? Melbourne has the highest rate of crime across all of Victoria
  • Identifying trends in crime can help law enforcement's make better decisions in the future to safeguard the public
  • So let's take a look at different crime offenses and see if we can identify any trends

Homicides

  • In between the years 2010 and 2019, there has been 1014 Homicides
  • Homicides appear to occur with no clear trend, as there is great volatility in the red line chart, and the bands on the blue regression chart are extremely wide

Sexual Assault

  • Unfortunately, in the period of 2010 to 2019, there were 47,735 sexual assault crimes recorded
  • Shockingly, sexual assault crimes have had a signficant increase and appears to be trending upwards
  • The only good news is that this uptrend appears to be slowing down, and Victoria could see sexual assault crimes slow down un the coming years

Theft

  • Theft is the most common crime in Victoria, with a total of 1,201,057 thefts being committed from 2010 to 2019
  • Theft had a huge decrease in the year 2017, but unfortunately the amonut of thefts per year continued to trend upwards

The Future

  • All crimes being committed in Victoria appear to be upending
  • It is important to identify the trend of crimes being committed, so that law enforcement can address weaknesses in their public protection
  • Why are Victorians increasing to commit crimes? Part of this is due to an increase in population, however it certainly is not the only thing that Victorians can blame an increase in crime on
  • The future of Victoria's safety is dependent on keeping crime to a minimum, however the data that I have presented to you data is confronting and proves that us, as Victorians, need to step up our game and all do our part in keeping our communites safer
