My Coding Goals:

  1. To develop an understanding of what markdown and R Markdown are, as well as an understanding of their importance to researchers.

  2. To practice using the features Danielle spoke about in her videos and familiarise myself with YAML.

  3. To accept that coding is difficult and that I may very well make mistakes before being able to master it. I intend to accept this fact gracefully (or perhaps die trying!)

How did I go in terms of achieving my goals?

Challenges

  • I initially struggled with creating headings, as I forgot to add a space following the #. I also felt that Level 1 headings were too large in comparison to the title, so I used Level 2 headings instead.

  • I had a difficult time trying to insert hyperlinks. I could easily insert the link on its own however, I strugged when I tried to have the link embedded into the text (not sure if I’ve explained that correctly). Eventually I realised that I had left a space between the end of the bracket and the parentheses, which was what caused the issue.

Strengths

  • I was able to successfully add a theme! I played around with a few before settling on ‘paper’, although I admit that I’d enjoy a bit more variety. Perhaps that’s something that I can look into.

  • I was able to insert an equation using the ‘LaTeX rules’ Danielle spoke about. It’s a relatively easy equation so I may have cheated however, I can live with this decision. See below:

\[ a^2 + b^2 = c^2 \]

Next Steps

  1. To begin working on the next coding module! My aim is to not only gain a better understanding of data visualisation but also start thinking about how this knowledge can benefit me/my team for the upcoming group project.

  2. To experiment with coding and actually have fun with it. I feel like if I approach it with an “oh this is boring, I can’t believe that I have to do this” mindset, I’ll develop a negative representation of coding. Then I would be like this at the end of term.

We do not want that. Here’s to successfully conditioning ourselves!
