Introduction

For this assignment I will be looking at text data of two beloved chicken eateries in Cincinnati. I have always been a supporter of the superior chicken restaurant, Chick Fil A, and am curious to see what the people of Cincinnati have to say about the chickens that these establishments serve.

I extracted yelp reviews from a local Chick Fil A and Canes and combined the two data frames in order to provide analysis on which restaurant is favored in the Cincinnati area.

Data Collection

I scraped review data from Yelp for each of these restaurants and formatted the non-tidy data into a data table. I then cleaned the data up by separating each review by word. The data withing the data table includes variables like reviewer name, review rating, review location, and many others.

Analysis

Visual 1

This visualization provides an overview of the reviewers opinion for each restaurant. Given this graph, the biggest thing to note is that Chick Fil A has a larger amount of positive reviews than Canes. It’s also interesting to note that Chick Fil A customers have more trust in their restaurant than Canes customers do.

I was curious which words were being used to help identify joy within each review. This table provides a look at which words spark “joy” for each restaurant. The first page provides a look at Canes and it’s joyous words. As you can see the NRC states that “toast” is a word that identifies with joy. This can be misleading when discussing a restaurant that serves toast with almost every meal. In this case, it’s most likely that the NRC identifies the act of toasting as a joyous occasion and not the food toast. This shows how sentiment analysis has its limitations. Other than that you can see that food, friendly, outstanding, and many other words do bring joy.

This visualization shows the reviewers ratings for each restaurant. From this we can see that Chick Fil A had a larger amount of 4 & 5 stars reviews, but also had sveral 1 star reviews, while Canes had none. With this being said, it seems that Chick Fil A customers either had a great experience or a horrible one. While for Canes, there were several reviews that were 2 & 3 stars, which suggests that Canes is an average restaurant.

Decision

Given the introduction, it’s clear to see where my allegiance lies between these two chicken restaurants. After completing this analysis and providing visualizations, I believe the work I’ve done helps show that Chick Fil A is the superior restaurant. The first visualization does the best job showing how Chick Fil A is the better eatery overall. Chick Fil A is superior in positivity, trust, joy, and anticipation. With that being said, on their best days they both provide delicious chicken.
