Assignment 7

Vinny Dang

4 May 2021

Introduction

For this assignment I will be using sentiment analysis on two competitive brands using twitter. The two brands I will be interested in is Nvidia and AMD. These are two computer/technology companies that are known for designing graphic processing units or central processing units. I’ve put together some PCs in the past so I know a bit about these two companies but I am interested to see what kind of sentiments these two companies have had recently. COVID has had a great impact on many different industries and computer technology companies such as these two have had a hard time keeping up with selling their products to their consumers this year. I am also interested to see how this has reflected in the sentiments on twitter.

Setup

Before doing any analysis on twitter, you will first need a twitter developer account. This is because a twitter token is required to scrape any sort of tweet from twitter. The data that was used for this document was scraped using rtweet. The scraped data was then hosted as a csv on a personal one drive to be easily used here. The searched tweets used in this set was also set to only scrape from English speakers only and to the most recent 200 tweets.

To do any sentiment analysis we will have to load the nrc lexicon such as seen below:

nrc <- get_sentiments("nrc")

Are the consumers of Nvidia generally more happy than AMD?

This is a very interesting question to me. Depending on what type of consumer you ask and what they prioritize, you’ll find yourself inevitably asking which company creates the better computer hardware product. I personally sway towards Nvidia and am pretty happy with their GPUs but AMD is just as good. I am also interested to see how this COVID year affected the sentiment towards these two companies. It has been near impossible to get the latest graphic cards or CPUs from these two companies which has definitely affected the mood of the consumers.

Let’s see what type of sentiments are brewing for Nvidia and AMD on Twitter!

Seems like the sentiments are very close for the most part upon initial glance. We can also see that there is more sentiments to be accounted for AMD compared to Nvidia. Certain sentiments differ from Nvidia and AMD such as trust and anticipation. Anticipation surpasses trust for AMD but trust is the 2nd highest bar for Nvidia. Overall it’s very interesting to see how much trust there are for these brands and the anticipation for their products are well deserved.

What type of positive and negative words are associated with Nvidia and AMD?

This analysis looks at what types of words pop up the most for these competing companies and if they are positive or negative. Really interesting to see which types of positive or negative words pop up for each respective company. Nvidia has a lot of positive comments about how innovative they are whereas AMD has a lot of positive words with “excitement” and “encouragement”. The number one positive AMD word is “fans” which is interesting but they could also be referring to a literal AMD cooling fan. So there may need to be a closer look at how the word is being used here.

What hour of the day is the most positive/negative for Nvidia and AMD on twitter?

I tried to find something interesting with the times or the day but not much could be done here due to the scraped tweets sample size. The sample size collected 200 tweets and the 200 recent tweets were all on the same day and within hours of each other. Not much analysis could’ve been done but I tried seeing which hour was the most positive/negative for each respective company.
